Welcome

to the April issue of the

Ackworth Arrow The nights are getting lighter and the weather has been somewhat brighter lately, what an exciting time of year this is, full of the promise of bright sunny mornings that fill us with motivation for the day and warm hazy evenings full of exercise, dog walks and alfresco dining. Not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but however you spend your late spring/summer evenings, it’s so much nicer with milder temperatures and light.

Plans are starting for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this June. We have an additional bank holiday this year so we now have 2nd and 3rd of June as bank holidays giving us a long weekend of celebrations. Each village has their own plans and If you want to get involved or have ideas, please share them with your Parish Council. The May issue deadline is Wednesday 13th April. The magazines will be delivered the last full weekend in April. Happy Easter Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

1st ACKWORTH SCOUT GROUP UPDATE

An update on 1st Ackworth Scout Groups activities over the last half term. All sections continue to successfully meet at the Quaker School Sports hall on Tuesday evenings. From its earliest days scouting has always included 1st Aid and how to stay safe as part of its programme. Our BEAVERS continued this tradition when they spent time working towards their Safety and Emergency Aid badges. The CUBS also worked towards Stage 2 of the Emergency Aid badge. They also learned how to prepare for hikes, and the sort of things to pack. They learned more about map reading and how to use a compass. They undertook some craft activities which included making boomerangs to celebrate Australia Day and Pan pipes, the latter being used to celebrate the festival of ‘Inti raymi’ an ancient Inca festival for the sun god. During the half term holiday they enjoyed an outdoor activity day. Here they undertook den building, fire lighting, were shown how to use an axe and saw, and made bird boxes to take home, as well as enjoying some wide games. The SCOUTS meanwhile took part in the County ‘Freezer camp’ at Hesley Wood campsite, 600 scouts were expected. Unfortunately it was planned for the week end storm ‘Eunice’ struck. It was considered too dangerous to sleep in tents on the Friday evening, so our group went early Saturday morning. Even in such poor conditions a good time was still had. Activities included a climbing wall and an indoor caving bus, archery, rifle shooting, quad bikes, crate stacking, lazer quest, axe throwing, a cinema and disco, and a scout favourite to end the evening a traditional campfire. All sections of the group look forward to more challenging outdoor activities as the Summer approaches. If your child is the adventurous sort there are still places available in all sections.
