Welcome
to the August issue of the
Ackworth Arrow Hot hot hot! I hope everyone coped with our heatwave in July. A sunny day improves the mood of us all, but sweltering temperatures like the ones reached in July made it difficult for many of us (Animal friends included) to function normally. We have been told to expect more summers like this, a further effect of climate change.
happening. The airport is something we are proud of and part of our landscape, heritage and history, please help to save our Airport. The September issue deadline is Wednesday 17th August. The Arrow will be delivered before 1st September. Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk
The Arrow went to print earlier than usual due to the holiday period and I had just found out the news that Doncaster Sheffield Airport has started a 6 week consultation to review its future. The closure of our airport would have a detrimental effect on our region and I plead with you to do all you can to support our Airport. Lobby your MP, sign petitions and keep up to date with what’s

1st ACKWORTH SCOUT GROUP Calling all 8-14 year olds. What did you do this summer? Stay at home and moan life’s boring, there’s nothing to do!! Well if you’d been a Cub or Scout in Ackworth there was plenty to keep you occupied. On one very hot weekend in July our Cubs and Scouts enjoyed camping, bouldering, airgun shooting, archery, grass sledging, fired crossbows and went on an obstacle course. They took part in a blindfold night trail and sang songs round a traditional Scout campfire. They learned the correct use of knives and axes and how ropes and knots could be used to create a pioneering project. The camp was held at Calderdrift Scout Campsite in glorious weather. Other activities besides camping have taken place this summer. The SCOUTS went on a litter pick round the village and were commended by members of the public. On one occasion they made their own videos, on another evening went on an Historical Trail round Ackworth. The CUBS have been busy working towards various badges and awards, and had a visit from an RSPCA inspector who explained all about the work of the society. The BEAVERS enjoyed sessions in the woods making fires and cooking marshmallows. They worked towards their Disability Badge and gained their Healthy Eating Badge. A visit to Pontefract Park was made and they followed the Falcon Trail learning more about wildlife. A second visit was made to Pontefract, this time to explore the Heritage Trail. To end the term the whole group came together in the woods and enjoyed an evening of games and a BBQ. As well as these fun activities the group joined in with the Armed Forces Day in Pontefract where they ran a Tombola stall. The money raised, over £400, was divided equally between the WWF and Mind. Our group gets up to all sorts of activities on a weekly basis - sports and games, earning badges, taking part in crafts, learning how to use maps and compasses, 1st Aid training, and generally how to be useful citizens in the community. The group is open to all between the ages of 6-14years, and is always on the lookout for fun loving youngsters (or adults!!) All sections meet Tuesday evenings in term time at the Quaker School Sports Hall.

An apology from the Editor Last month we published an article which descibed St.George’s Crypt, as a centre for Down and Outs. We missed this and would like to apologise —St George’s Crypt is a Leeds based charity offering compassion and hope to the homeless, vulnerable and those suffering from addiction.
