Editor’s letter...

Carolyn, Julie & Michelle! Welcome to the April issue of the Ackworth Arrow, thank you to everyone who has been in contact with information and feedback. It’s all appreciated. I need to hear from some more local groups so if you chair any local meetings, manage any sport teams or are a member of a regular community group and would like to share your news and events with everyone else in Ackworth, please let me know, e-mail me on the details below and we will publish your news free! Likewise, if you would like to advertise your business in the Arrow, contact me for costs, you will be surprised how little it is to advertise your business in a magazine which is read, shared and enjoyed. Checkout the competition for free tickets to see Status Quo at the Doncaster Race Course, it promises to be a fun packed evening, so don’t forget to e-mail me your name, that’s all it takes! The deadline for the May issue will be Wednesday 30th April. Farewell for now, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Happy Easter Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 01302 534256 / 07795 387937 Email: michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk

We all love to see our gardens in tip top shape, neat and tidy and waiting to be enjoyed by family and friends, but do we all enjoy the work it takes to get it looking like that? Unfortunately not! So for those of you who peer out the window and cringe, read on… Sometimes is not just the lack of interest in the garden, it really is simply finding the time, all that weeding, pruning and planting etc takes time and care. If this rings a bell, maybe you need a low maintenance garden. Why not start with a really easy project—a border! All you need is a roll of weed control (£6.95 for 10m x 1m roll), lay it out in your desired location and add slate or stones on top (prices range from £10 for 4 bags). There you have it, an instant effect which looks good. No more weeding too!

Every year we make many trips to garden centres and wander aimlessly, looking for something to inspire us. Often enough, we leave with something which is inappropriate for our garden and doesn't really have any impact on the finished product. In our life time we spend over £10000 on plants for the garden! If we got it right first time, we would spend a fraction of that. Low maintenance planting is not difficult, you just need specimen plants, great planters and a local company that is willing to spend a little time advising you how to get there each step of the way. A low maintenance, beautiful, thought through designer feel garden is not difficult to achieve, you just need the right people to talk too. If you are interested in working towards a low maintenance garden that looks like it’s had a designer plan it, then drop into Bentleys. Come armed with your ideas on your phone, ipad or even a rough drawing and we will show you how easy and cost effective low maintenance can be.

Next, we look at ‘the instant garden’ and low maintenance. It’s good to have a plan, even if it is just an idea of how you want your garden to look and the colours you would like to see.

Maybe Another Colour? Why is it when we’re buying planters we only have the choice of glazed Blue, Black, that awful Green or Terracotta? Where are the fab planters in different sizes in Reds, Yellow, Purples, Oranges or any other colour you want if it comes to it? If you’re not into gardening and want low maintenance then flowers are probably not high on your list for your garden. Having to know when they flower, what compost to use, when to plant them and so on. Low maintenance gardeners want all year round greenery in the shape of Yucca, Cordylines, Palms etc etc but as much as Green is great it really is nice to add a bit of colour and this can be done by being a little bold with planter colours and Bentleys is the place where we can do almost any colour of planter you want in any size. Long gone are the days of no choice, zero interest, no help and so on. At Bentleys we want you to have the garden you really want and deserve but have never known how to get it. Designer looks and great trees and plants don’t have to cost the earth. You can have it all with our advice and a little help from yourself. St Cuthberts & All Saints Dear Friends, Easter is here again - a time of celebration for Christians and nonChristians alike. For many people Easter is often regarded as the time that Spring starts. Certainly during the last few weeks the weather has been more Spring-like; a little warmer and less wet. Buds and blossoms are appearing on trees and all the popular spring flowers are dressing the gardens and hedges with a much needed splash of colour. I think it’s safe to say that Spring has finally arrived to usher Easter in with a sense of expectation. But what does Easter mean to you? For Christians, it’s the celebration of when the resurrected Jesus Christ returned from the dead after Good Friday. For others we have only to look in the shops to see many images associated with Easter, daffodils, bunnies, chicks, spring lambs and last, but by no means least, eggs, particularly chocolate ones. So what have all these things got in common? In a nutshell (or perhaps I should say eggshell!) they are all signs of new life and new growth, particularly after the long lifeless sleep of winter and eggs are a good image of this. On the outside the shells appear cold and hard - almost like the feel of stone and yet inside can be a new life forming, to break out as those loveable, fluffy

yellow chicks. It is often said that eggs became a symbol of Easter because their shells, like Jesus’ tomb - cut into the rock - burst open to release new life - resurrected life. So, as we shake off the dust and gloom of winter I hope you manage to find new life and new growth in your lives at this time of bright expectation. A happy Easter from Rev. Paul Hartley, Rector of St Cuthbert’s and All Saints’ Ackworth. Sunday Services 8:30am 10:15am 15:30pm
