News, News, News, News ... 125 years of All Saints’ Church The weather forecast was poor, it was the Wimbledon mens final, Le Tour was still in Yorkshire, and the Yorkshire Cricket team were playing nearby. Yet, All Saints’ Church was full of, and surrounded by people and activities all day long. At 10:15 in the morning of 6th July 2014, the organ of All Saints’ struck up the first hymn, and the day began with a service of celebration and thanksgiving for 125 years of worship at All Saints, led by Bishop Tony Robinson. There was then a short break before the afternoons activities began. The Ackworth Handbell Ringers entertained with extreme concentration. The U3A windband also entertained the crowd with a medley of music. There were childrens activities and games throughout the afternoon, where many crowns and saints and churches were made. Tea, coffee and biscuits were available all afternoon. At 3:00pm a mountainous selection of sandwiches arrived from the Brown Cow Pub High Ackworth. At 4:30pm the afternoon was rounded off by a service of Prayer and Praise where everyone sang out their hearts. As the gazebos were finally packed away, after everyone had left, and the church and grounds returned to normal, the clouds gathered and the rain began to fall. We joked that we had tweeted a prayer for good weather and a convivial atmosphere, and reflected that God had heard that prayer, perhaps he has a twitter account! The small selection of photos give a flavour of the day, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A big thank you to all who helped to plan the day, set up for the day, serve on the day, and clear up after the day. And also for all those who came to celebrate 125 years of worship. St Cuthberts & All Saints Competition

At the time of writing, we appear to be in the midst of a festival of sport. The FIFA World Cup has just reached the knockout stages and it’s all beginning to get a bit tense. And although England are no longer in the tournament, we may still have our favourites. The Wimbledom Tennis Championship is in full flow, and at the moment Britain’s hopes in Andy Murray are still alive. Soon “Le Tour” will be setting off from The Headrow in Leeds, and travelling around Yorkshire, and many people will be travelling to witness this unique (to Yorkshire) event. Later in July there are the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where there are sure to be cheers for our favourite sports people as we will them on to achieve as they did in the Olympics two years ago. There is sport wherever we look. And sport brings competition, between teams, and individuals. It seems not that long ago that the government we stating that competition in a school setting was a bad thing, because there were always losers, and this had a detrimental effect on the individual. But it seems that competition is all around us, and not just in sport, as anyone who has faced competition for a job will testify. Winning a competition is a fantastic feeling, losing in a competition is difficult, but sometimes just competing is a good thing. Some people will quote “no-one remembers who came second”. This is true, and something to take to heart if you want fame and potential fortune. St Paul in his letters to the Corinthians, to the Hebrews and to Timothy in the New Testament has something to say about sport, and competition, and winning. He tells us that we are in a race, the race of life, and eternal life is the finishing line. He gives lots of advice about preparing for the race, about how to run the race, and in particular describing the victors crown which awaits you when you cross the finishing line. 8:30am Communion All Saints Church He describes in the Hebrews about how we are 10:15am Communion St Cuthbert's Church 15:30pm Afternoon Worship All Saints Church being watched whilst we run this race. In Hebrews chapter eleven he list a long line of faithful people Monday-Thursday who are known through the Bible stories. And his 9:00am Morning Prayer St Cuthbert's Church assertion is that these faithful people are like a 5:00pm Evening Prayer St Cuthbert's Church crowd in a sports arena, cheering us on, willing us Wednesday to the finishing line. I for one, would be glad to see 9:30am Holy Communion All Saints Church St Paul cheering me on in my race of faith. The thing about this race, is that everyone who crosses Thursday 10:00am Coffee Morning All Saints Church the finishing line is a winner, and no-one loses. We 14:00pm Self help drop-in All Saints Church can all wear the winners crown, and carry the gold medal. Rev Paul Hartley I am not a particularly sporty person, but I like to 01977 602751 watch some sport played at a high level. rev.paulhartley@yahoo.co.uk Competition is not a bad thing, because it is the Rev Paul Fox competition which spurs us on to the finishing line. 01977 613834 But if we can see that just by reaching the finishing revpaul.fox@gmail.com line we have achieved our goal, then we will all be Text 07752782678 winners together.
