ACKWORTH GALA 2015 A Resounding Success! The sunshine attracted thousands of people to Ackworth’s Annual Gala. This popular event started with a parade through the village, finishing at Carr Bridge Playing Fields on Barnsley Road. The parade was led by the Ambassadors of Borrowash, an American style marching band from Derbyshire, who were followed by 16 organisations. Gala Queen Jaden Forrester, a pupil at Mill Lane School, arrived in style in a vintage vehicle. The Gala was opened by Ackworth Parish Council Chairman Coun. Sarah Balfour. She also judged the fancy dress competition supported by Coun. Pat Garbutt and Coun. Jessica Carrington. With prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each age group. It was lovely to see so many handmade costumes. The crowds were entertained by Ridgeside Falconry and the Lurcher Team, and Jesters Sports Acro from Featherstone who performed acrobatic routines. Lots of fundraising stalls from local charities, groups and societies helped raise more than £10,000 for good causes.

A Great Day Out!

The Ackworth 74 Club Summer Outing.

On July 14th 34 ladies, members and friends of the 74 Club set off in high spirits for their 2015 Annual Summer Outing, which this year was to Skipton. The coach arrived promptly in Skipton at 11 am and the ladies were then free to explore the town and spend three very happy and rewarding hours investigating all the many and varied shops that Skipton has to offer. Most took time out to enjoy a refreshing coffee or delicious light lunch before heading back to re-group at the Skipton Canal Basin. At 2 pm the ladies boarded the narrowboat “The Dalesman” for their two hours cruise on the Leeds Liverpool Canal. The gentle pace of the narrowboat and the glorious dales scenery slipping by, was just the change everyone needed after their hectic time spent in the town. They were all able to relax and chat and enjoy the Afternoon Cream Tea served whilst on board. The narrowboat returned to the Canal basin just in time for the group to board the coach for their return journey to Ackworth. Everyone assured President Moira Spears that it had been a very successful and enjoyable Club outing and that they couldn’t wait to find out where they might be heading next year. They all expressed their appreciation to Pat Lawson Club Secretary for arranging and booking the outing.

Down Memory Lane Join us at the newly formed Ackworth Singing Group For people in the early to moderate stages of dementia and their carers. Down Memory Lane is the brain child of Ackworth resident and retired Primary School Headteacher, Julie Davis. In May this year Julie started her Singing Group and she insists it is not a choir, so no experience necessary! The singing group is intended for people with early to moderate stages of dementia and their carers. It meets every Wednesday afternoon between 1 pm and 3 pm to sing, dance and move to music in a friendly and informal setting. The music is all post 1940’s and will be familiar to everyone, including music from the shows such as” Singing in the Rain” and “Do-Re-Mi” and all the old favourites such as “Bring Me Sunshine” and ”Killing Me Softly With His Song ”. There is always a break for refreshments and conversation and so group members can get to know each other and develop friendships. Julie is keen to promote the work of the group and to attract new members. If you know of anyone in the area who might benefit from such a group then please pass on the information. Contact Julie Davis 07950 825094 / j.e.davis9@btinternet.com for further details. In liaison with Alzheimer’s Society, Wakefield – 01924 373264 / wakefield@alzheimers.org.uk

Club membership is now up to 172 a record number As part of the celebrations for the 30th Anniversary of the club, 51 members were joined by friends from Goole Viking Striders, with whom we have a reciprocal agreement, for our Summer Handicap over a new course around Winterset. Fastest around the 5.6 mile course was Simon Newton in 31’23” fastest lady was Liane Warren in 40’16” Notable recent performances nationally have been set by Terry Forrest who was third in the Liverpool Rock & Roll Marathon on 14th June in 2 hours 35’30” from a field of 2000 runners, on the same day Simon Newton finished 11th out of 5500, in 78’30”, in the Rock & Roll Half Marathon, Simon travelled south on 25th May, for another great performance, by winning the Kent Road Runners Marathon in 2 hours 40’42” On 12th/13th June Simon Bennett completed the South Down’s Way 100 miles mainly off road event, a real feat of stamina. The clubs annual Grand Prix competition has almost reached the half way stage, leading currently is Ian Richardson, with Denise Clark, the Joint Ladies Captain, leading lady.

The Ackworth Heritage Group A force within the village since Year 2000!

The Heritage Group has been working away within the village since it’s formation in year 2000 They have spearheaded repair and maintenance work on many of the various historical features in and around the village. Such as the preaching cross, the finger post on the Green and the restoration of the Obelisk. Some things simply needed a little TLC or painting such as the milestones and railings around John Gully’s grave: a colourful character, Liberal MP, prize fighter and father of 24 children to his two wives. John Gully, who died in 1863 and lies buried in land adjacent to St Cuthbert’s churchyard. Other projects undertaken by the Heritage Group have included producing postcards of the village and publishing books. They have also been actively engaged in preserving some of the history of the village in street names that will live on. For example, Carrington Garden being renamed Beaufort Mews after Beaufort Farm , Lamprey Gardens after Lamprey’s Nurseries and Lourdes Grange after the Catholic Church, which previously stood on the site. Now also the streets in the new housing development at Green Lane will be named after the quarry owners of Ackworth. Most recently the group has been a driving force behind the erection of the monument to workers Miss Eileen King opening the Heritage Group's killed in quarry accidents. Each year the Heritage Annual Event on the Village Green. group hosts an Annual Event on the Village Green with stalls, refreshments and other activities. If you have an interest in history and love the village and would like to become involved in these and similar projects then please do consider joining the Heritage Group. They meet on the fourth Thursday of every month at the Bell Lane Centre at 7 pm. Newcomers can be assured of a warm welcome. For just £3 per year you can become a member and non members can attend, on an ad hoc basis, for just £1 per session. Above: Mr. Stephen Parker (the last quarry owner in Ackworth) being presented with a painƟng by Mr N. Atkinson on behalf of the Heritage Group in recogniƟon for all his hard work in geƫng the stone ready for the Memorial. They would also like to thank Lancaster's Memorial Masons for doing the leƩering on the Memorial Stone.

St Cuthberts & All Saints All Saints Church Community Weekend The planning was done. The preparations completed. The stalls laid out. The gazebos were in place. All that was needed was good weather, and lots of people. Following the success of our celebrations last year, it was decided to bring some annual events together. So a weekend was planned to hold, the Summer Fair, the Summer Raffle, the Strawberry Tea, with the addition of a Teddy Bears Picnic. So on Saturday morning a stunning display of plants and flowers for sale greeted everyone as they arrived at church for the sales and tombola’s inside, and to sit inside away from the occasional drizzle which graced the early part of the morning, with refreshments. The weather cleared for the afternoon of family fun with games, activities, more tombola’s, music and face painting. And central to this was the Teddy Bears Picnic, where children, and adults, gathered with there Teddy Bears, of all shapes and sizes to share in a picnic. Sunday afternoon was a barmy afternoon, with the sun shining brightly and warmly, as Sounds of Mellow entertained crowds with easy listening as they gathered under the shade of the gazebos to eat scones, strawberries and cream, cake and tea. The scene was typical of an English Summer Sunday afternoon. As we were thinking of tidying up and putting things away as the crowd began to disperse, something ominous was speeding up the A638. Large black clouds which eventually dropped their contents heavily upon Ackworth. So the tidying up and putting things away happened very hastily and all involved we more than a little wet. But it was a good weekend, where many people enjoyed the company of others, and new friends were made. The weather held out until the very end, but the plants and flowers were well watered. Paul Fox

ENROLS ITS 1,000TH MEMBER At Ackworth Community Library we are pleased to announce we enrolled our 1,000th member last week. Seven-year-old Annabel White, accompanied by her mum, was presented with an art pack by assistant librarian Tina Adamson when she became the 1,000th member to enrol at the library since it opened in March 2013 Library Trustee, Roger Brown stated, 'In just over two years, following the closure of Ackworth Branch Library by Wakefield M.D.C., we have developed the community library to replace it. This facility is being well used and is much appreciated by all its members and the wider community. The library is now open six days a week and member numbers are rising rapidly. The library has also created a limited number of short-term employment posts and a variety of volunteering opportunities for people of all ages within the village. We are delighted to welcome Annabel as our 1,000th member and would like to thank all members, volunteers and supporters of Ackworth Community Library for all their encouragement and assistance. The library has been fortunate to secure some short term grants to help with running costs but it can only continue with the support and fund-raising activities of local people and businesses to pay for basic costs such as licences, insurance and salaries.' For further information about Ackworth Community Library call 01977 625617, e-mail ackworthcommuntylibrary@hotmail.co.uk go to our website at www.ackworthcommunity.co.uk or see us on Facebook. Attached photograph shows seven year old Annabell White following her enrolment as Ackworth Library's 1000th member.
