COMMUNITY NEWS Please can you help? The Ackworth and Pontefract group of Contact The Elderly are seeking to recruit new volunteer Drivers and Hosts. Contact the Elderly is a charity which aims to combat loneliness and isolation felt by older people living alone. The Charity organises Sunday afternoon tea parties once a month for older guests, aged over 75 and living alone, especially those who need the opportunity to get out and about and socialise. Volunteer Drivers pick up older guests from their home and escort them safely to the home of a Volunteer Host. The Host provides an afternoon tea and lots of friendly conversation. Could you be a Volunteer Driver just one Sunday a month, 6/7 times a year, for about 3 hours? Do you have a warm and welcoming home and like entertaining? Could you host a tea party 3 pm – 5 pm, just once a year for 6/7 older residents? For more information, or to attend a tea party and meet the guests and find out more before making a commitment, then contact Sue Smith-Wilkins on 01977 615608 or visit contact-theelderly.org.uk or call Yorkshire Officer Kath Lloyd on 01535 280002 or email Kath Lloyd on kath.lloyd@contactthe-elderly.org.uk

It’s Monday! It’s The Methodist Church Coffee Morning! For Coffee, Cake and Company the Methodist Church is the place to be on Mondays! Every Monday morning throughout the year, except for Bank Holidays, Members of the Methodist Church hold a Coffee Morning from 10.30 am – 12 noon. Individual members take it in turns to personally host this event and make the coffee and provide delicious cakes. On the morning I visited it was Church Member Kath Wiles who was hosting, supported by Iris Coop and Ruth Miles. Other Church members who are also actively involved in this venture on other Mondays include, Sylvia Lemm, Lynne Bromley, Audrey Booth, Susan Swales, Judy Reid, Karen Robson and friends. The coffee morning is a firm favourite with up to 20-30 local residents who enjoy the opportunity to “meet up” and “catch up” with friends. Local resident, Ivy Hollinworth, who has lived in the village all her life, said how much she looked forward to Monday mornings, the chatter and the delicious cakes! A slice to take home was not to be missed! Everyone is welcome and there is usually a very good atmosphere and the Church Hall itself provides a very pleasant venue in which to hold the coffee morning or indeed any other social event. The Church Hall and adjacent facilities, which does include a modern and very useful kitchen, have over the past 6-8 years been thoroughly renovated and refurbished. Much of the renovation work was undertaken by Church Members themselves, supported by local tradesmen. Indeed the Boys Brigade undertook to do some of the decorating work. They are all to be congratulated as the finished result is a very pleasing, bright and airy room making great use of the old Schoolroom space within this lovely old Methodist Church. Sue Smith-Wilkins.

Hepworth Band and local school choirs fundraising for Parkinson’s UK this Christmas. One of Yorkshire’s top brass bands, the Hepworth Band, join forces with Ackworth School Choir and Wakefield Girls High School Choir the Major Minors to present the “Countdown to Christmas” concert at 7pm on the 6th December at the Meeting House, Ackworth School, WF7 7LT to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK. This musical extravaganza of seasonal music, carols and festive favourites is guaranteed to get you into the Christmas spirit and offers something for everyone to enjoy. Steve Hopwood, Manager of the Hepworth Band says “we’re delighted to be joining forces with the choirs from Ackworth and Wakefield Girls High Schools to help raise vital funds to find a cure and improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson’s. Following on from the success of the first ‘Countdown to Christmas’ concert last year we very much hope to make this an annual event as we look forward to the festive season”. Chrissie Fielden, Regional Fundraiser for Parkinson’s UK in the Yorkshire and Humber region says “this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the musical talent of the Hepworth Brass Band and the school choirs and to get everyone into the festive mood whilst raising money for Parkinson’s UK.” Paul Jackson-Clark, Director of Fundraising at Parkinson’s UK, said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to all concerned in making this extra special Christmas event happen. As the UK’s Parkinson’s support and research charity we’re leading the work to find a cure, and we’re closer than ever. But our work is totally dependent on donations.” The funds raised by “Countdown to Christmas” will allow Parkinson’s UK to continue with its vital research work to find a cure, and improve the lives of the 127,000 people in the UK who are affected by Parkinson’s. If you want to be part of this festive musical extravaganza tickets are available from Ackworth School office on 01977 611401, Hepworth Brass Band by emailing BandSecretary@hepworthband.com or emailing fundraising@parkinsons.org.uk or calling 020 7963 9330. St Cuthberts & All Saints Countdown... Are you counting down to Christmas? When I was a child we used to count the number of shopping days until Christmas. Now, of course, every day is a shopping day. It is more usual now to count the number of sleeps before Christmas, that is, the number of nights. I wonder, do you countdown in a similar fashion to other events, how many days until your birthday, how many days until your holiday. If you are pregnant, you may be counting the days until the baby is due! Mary and Joseph, in first century Palestine, were doing just that, counting the days until their firstborn child was due. But there was another count going on at just the wrong time. This count was a census. Now, we may know that this kind of thing happens in the UK every ten years. But for Mary and Joseph it represented a problem. It wasn’t an on-line census, it wasn’t a postal census, there were no people knocking on doors asking who is in the house. In this census, everyone had to be registered in the town of their birth. This meant, that at the time when Mary and Joseph were expecting their first born, they had to travel several days, on a donkey, to Bethlehem. The problem being, so were thousands of other people. So, from no desire of their own, but because the authorities said so, Mary, being heavily pregnant, had to travel on a donkey, with her husband, in the heat of several days. And when they arrive in Bethlehem, all the places to stay were filled, because many other people had travelled there as well. Mary and Joseph therefore found themselves without anywhere to stay, homeless, and then Mary went into labour. Can you imagine being in that position today? What a disaster! How would you react to someone in that position should they walk into your street? Would you give them the time of day, would you offer them a room, would you care for them? Many people in Bethlehem, on that night, didn’t do any of those things, and so Mary and Joseph just wandered around, until someone took pity on them and offered them a stable. And so it was that Jesus was born in a stable. So if you should come across Mary and Joseph walking around, with a donkey. Think twice about what your reaction might be, and what you might offer! In first century Palestine, it was the Jesus, the Son of God who was shunned. Who might be shunned today?
