Editor’s letter... Well January was certainly predictable with its weather, one of the coldest on record I believe and probably the windiest!! Not the best month to start running outside, however, if you managed any exercise out side, well done. Once you get going its not bad really but it takes everything to get you motivated to brave the weather in store! As Steve Cram once said, ‘the hardest thing about running is putting your trainers on’, certainly true for me last month! I know there are lots of you who are planning to join the DAC beginners runners course at the end of January, I would love to hear from you to find out how you get on in February, good luck to you all! February is the month for romantics and once again, all our local pubs are offering something special to help you celebrate your Valentines Day evening, so please be sure to book as it falls on a Saturday this year! What ever you do, I hope you have a special evening! The deadline for the March issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 18th February. The March Arrow will be delivered the last weekend in February.

St Cuthberts & All Saints Resolutions! Many people will have made a New Year Resolution, but not many people will see them last into February. New Year is always a good time to think about doing something like this. A new year, a new start, a change. But it reality it is a really difficult thing to do. A lot of new year resolutions revolve around diets and exercise. After the excesses of Christmas it is good to think about losing the pounds that were gained, or about stretching the muscles that have been still. The problem, of course, is motivation. It’s very easy to sit and plan a diet or exercise regime, but it is much more difficult to get up and do something about it. It is even harder if you are trying to break the habit of a life time. Old habits are hard to break, a change in lifestyle is difficult to maintain. The older you are, the more difficult it is to change. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks! I don’t think that it is ever impossible to change, no matter how old you are, or how sedate your life might be. It may not be easy, but it is not impossible. A new year is good time to think of your physical self it terms of diet and exercise, but it should not stop there. It is very common for people to concentrate on one aspect of their life, and try and improve it. But this is to deny what we really are, and how we are made. We do not just exist as a physical body, we are more than that. We are physical, psychological, social, and spiritual. All of these aspects of our being need to be in balance, if we are to live our lives to the full. Neglecting any one of them will be to our detriment. So when making any resolution, be it at New Year, or at any other part of your life, it is important to bear this in mind. A good resolution might be to address each of these aspects of our lives in a small way. Or even just making sure that we are addressing each aspect our lives. So if you find yourself thinking of a resolution to make at any time through the year, think about these four aspects of yourself, and try to keep them in balance. Rev Paul Fox revpaul.fox@gmail.com
