Editor’s letter... Welcome to the February issue of the Ackworth Arrow. I have to say, I’m pleased January is now behind us! I hope you managed to avoid the dreaded cold bug. It was nice to experience our first real frost of the winter, lets hope it has sent the bugs running! If like me, you have lost your keep fit mojo, Ackworth's new gym, Fit 4 Life maybe just what you need to get you focused again. Details are in this month’s issue, along with information on the new ‘Malone’s’ bar and restaurant. If you are looking for a special Valentines Evening, give Malone’s a try.

The early deadline for the March issue is Wednesday 10th February. The March Arrow will be delivered by the last weekend in February.

COMMUNITY NEWS Ackworth St. Cuthbert’s Hand Bell Ringers. At the December Meeting of Ackworth Yorkshire Country Women’s Association members were enjoyably entertained by St. Cuthbert’s Hand Bell Ringers! The Hand Bell Ringing group were formed eight years ago, with just two members who had previous experience of hand bell ringing. The current group of nine ringers are trained, managed and conducted by Dave Harvey. Each player has at least three bells to ring, though some have four or even five! When they play they each have a copy of the music and each player follows the music and plays their bell (hopefully) at the right moment. The group play a wide range of music, popular tunes, Christmas Carols and church music. They meet weekly throughout the year to practice and are available and indeed happy to play for different local groups and organisations. At present the group is full but they do welcome interest from prospective members. The Bells The group have a three octave set of 37 bells. The bells are of unknown make. However they were made in the 19th century and are about 160 years old. They were donated by the Lamprey family to St Cuthbert’s Chuirch in 1954. Members of the Lamprey family still live in the village and the group have a copy of a photograph taken in 1910 of the family with the bells. The bells were refurbished about twenty years ago. Dec 17th Radio Leeds came to The handles and clappers were restored and the bells were polished. They are now showing signs of Ackworth wear and the group are currently trying to raise Ackworth Hand Bell Ringers were present but enough moneyto have them repaired again. sadly not enough to play any of their pieces. It was There are hand bell ringing groups all over the country (and the world). They can range in size from decided to do some change ringing instead. Hand Bells were first cast in the 16th cent to help tower 12 to 200 bells– very impressive to watch and to bell ringers practice in the comfort of the local listen to. The Ackworth group also has a three octave set of hand chimes. These were bought from tavern. Richard Stead, the host of the programme, takes on a "challenge" in each of the shows he America in 1990. They are tuned to the bells and hosts. They had decided that an appropriate can be played together. challenge for him would be to take two bells as If you would like the Ringers to play at a local part of the group. After some explanation and a event for your group or organisation please very short practice, he successfully managed to ring the bells and in the right place! contact Dave Harvey tel. 01977 610739

St Cuthberts & All Saints BBC Radio Leeds comes to Ackworth

The Thursday Coffee Morning at All Saints Church on 17th December, was a different and busy affair. Mainly because Richard Stead from BBC Radio Leeds broadcast his Morning Show from All Saints Church. After a few email exchanges, and a meeting to check the sound, the scene was set. The van with satellite dish arrived at 7:30am, Richard the engineer was setting up the equipment, closely followed by Emma and Jane, the producers of the show, and Richard the presenter. First thing was breakfast, from the local sandwich shop. As the morning progressed, Richard interviewed several people from our congregations, and coffee morning staff, together with people who performed during the morning, namely the Featherstone Male Voice Choir, and the Ackworth Hand Bell Ringers, together with Mrs Ward Head Teacher Bell Lane Academy with two children from year 6. He even found his old French teacher from high school in the choir, who baffled him with some French! He was also challenged to take up the heaviest of the bells and ring a change with them. Done admirably, to a round of applause. It was a good morning, and enjoyed by all. If you missed it, it is available on the BBC Radio Leeds website until mid January 2016.
