Editor’s letter... Welcome to the January issue of the Ackworth Arrow. You may well be suffering from the annual feast known as Christmas. The only time of the year where food contains no calories! If that’s you, don’t worry, there are plenty of sales to visit to keep you busy and burn off those extra pounds ;) Unfortunately, due to the early deadline for this issue, we have not been able to bring you news and photos of all the Christmas celebrations, however, we will share these with you in the February issue. If you have any photographs you would like to share, please send them to me at my email address below. Thank you to all the Arrow readers, advertisers and contributors, I wish you all a wonderful New Year filled with family, friends and good health. Cheers! The deadline for the February issue is Wednesday 20th January. The February Arrow will be delivered the last weekend in January. Happy New Year Michelle Sidebottom Website E-mail Mobile Landline

Please can you help? The Ackworth and Pontefract group of Contact The Elderly are seeking to recruit new volunteer Drivers and Hosts. Contact the Elderly is a charity which aims to combat loneliness and isolation felt by older people living alone. The Charity organises Sunday afternoon tea parties once a month for older guests, aged over 75 and living alone, especially those who need the opportunity to get out and about and socialise. Volunteer Drivers pick up older guests from their home and escort them safely to the home of a Volunteer Host. The Host provides an afternoon tea and lots of friendly conversation. Could you be a Volunteer Driver just one Sunday a month, 6/7 times a year, for about 3 hours? Do you have a warm and welcoming home and like entertaining? Could you host a tea party 3 pm – 5 pm, just once a year for 6/7 older residents? For more information, or to attend a tea party and meet the guests and find out more before making a commitment, then contact Sue Smith-Wilkins on 01977 615608 or visit contact-the-elderly.org.uk or call Yorkshire Officer Kath Lloyd on 01535 280002 or email Kath Lloyd on kath.lloyd@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

In my last report I mentioned that one of our members Lesley Needham had run in Las Vagas, I was unaware that Kirsty Shepherd, Sarah Longfield & Alison John-Baptiste had also joined her in the Rock & Roll Half Marathon & 5K races on 14/15th November. In another busy month Rebecca Winter & Richard Ritucci both just beat the highly respectable 40’ barrier in the Abbey Dash 10k, on 15th November, both achieving personal bests, Simon Newton ran 35’56” & Mark Mills 37’48” in the same race.

In the first race of the season of the PECO CrossCountry League, at Temple Newsam, a competition amongst eleven West Yorkshire club teams, on 22nd November, Terry Forrest finished 2nd in a field of 666 runners, also 466 ladies, Simon Newton was 15th, age group winners were Charlie Lines, Karen Ball & Brian Dodd, John Bell was third, Denise Clarke fourth, & Peter Grimaldby seventh. In the team races the Men’s Veteran’s team finished second, the other team’s mid-table. On 28th November mother & son Janet & James Barr both set personal bests at the Nostell Park Run a very unusual coincidence? On 29th November Terry Forrest finished 6th in a very strong field of 700, in 34’33”at the Barnsley 10k, Rebecca Winter was second lady home in 39’43. Forty club members ran, many for the first time, in this very hilly race. Our team of Helena Kerr, Liane Warren, Rebecca Winter won the Ladies Team Prize, Liane was also second in her age group. The Ackworth 74 Club Christmas Candlelight Celebration As in previous years the 74 Club Candlelight Celebration proved a firm favourite with local residents! The Celebration of Carols Readings, Prayers and Poems presented by Club Members superbly supported by instrumental and vocal soloists from the Ackworth Community Choir, Junior Section was attended by over 80 people, Club members, friends and residents. Afterwards, in the true spirit of Christmas, everyone who attended was entertained to a free Faith Supper in the Methodist Church Hall. There was a retiring collection and £130 was donated to the Ackworth Methodist Church Funds. The Club would like to thank everyone who supported this event and helped to make it so successful. Please note Next month’s meeting of the 74 Club, the New Year Meal, will be held at the Pontefract Masonic Hall. Anyone who has not yet ordered their meal should contact Sue on 01977 615608

St Cuthberts & All Saints Was that who I thought it was?
A cold December morning saw the arrival of some surprising guests in Ackworth, and you may have seen them. Mary and Joseph, together with their donkeys arrived in Ackworth around 9:00am looking for somewhere to stay. They were to be seen walking around the streets, and through the Co-op car park. Causing many a second look from passing drivers and dog walkers! They visited Bell Lane Academy, where the nursery and reception children were treated to a description from Joseph about how difficult their journey had been. Followed by the opportunity to feed the donkeys some carrots. They were then seen walking towards Hemsworth, and calling in at Oakfield Park School, where all the students turned out to see them. After lunch they made an appearance at the schools Christmas concert at St Cuthbert’s Church, in the middle of the children’s nativity. One of the donkeys was not particularly well behaved, but Joseph was able once again tell of the difficult journey he and Mary had had. Then someone shouted from the back of church that a place had been found for them. And so they disappeared. But everyone at that concert was able to see the donkeys once more. This was a memorable event for all involved. A big thank you to Mark Ineson and Craig, at Real Donkeys, (www.realdonkeys.com) and also Ash and Jackie, for showing us what it was really like to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
