St Cuthberts & All Saints Saints, Saints, and All Saints We are surrounded by saints of all natures. Each of the four countries making up the United Kingdom has a patron saint, George, David, Andrew and Patrick. Most churches are called by a saints name, as St Cuthbert’s Church in Ackworth. Many professions have a patron saint, St Cecilia for musicians, St Catherine for Nurses. There are whole dictionaries full of saints’ names. The Catholic Church still makes Saints such as John Paul II. However, we must be clear, that saints are not there to be worshipped instead of God. Saints are examples of how to live a good life, a holy life, a Christian life. They are people who are looked up to, for many different reasons. For example, St Cuthbert was a man who followed the teachings of Christ, became a monk, and then a Bishop in Lindisfarne (the remains of the abbey can still be visited on Lindisfarne, Northumbria), but who spent a great deal of time preaching and teaching and looking after the poor of the North of England in the early centuries of the first millennium. At St Cuthbert’s Church in Ackworth, he is not worshipped, but he is remembered, by his appearance in the stained glass window in the chancel, and we celebrated his life this year in March at a special Celtic Service in March. The second Anglican Church in Ackworth is dedicated to All Saints. All saints literally means just that, all the saints that are in the dictionaries, and remembered all over the world. Some of which may be quite obscure, like St Zoilus, or St Dingad! But there is another way of looking at all the saints. When you read about all the saints in the Bible, you are reading about all the people who follow the way of Christ. So that really includes lots of people, probably including you and me.

14

If you live a good life, a holy life, and in particular a Christian life, lived by Christian values, then you are probably a saint. So when we celebrate All Saints’ day in November, at All Saints’ Church, we celebrate the lives of millions of people, both dead and living. On Sunday the 6th July 2014, All Saints’ Church Ackworth will be 125 years old. We are celebrating this event, with a special service led by The Bishop, and a party picnic in the afternoon, with activities. Come and join us as we celebrate all the saints past and present, and be a saint yourself! Rev Paul Fox, revpaul.fox@gmail.com
