COMMUNITY NEWS The Ackworth 74 Club June Meeting Summer Walk On June 9th the Club enjoyed their annual evening walk How fortunate that the weather was kind. It was a lovely, dry and warm evening as 21 members gathered at the King's Arms on Heath Common.

The Memorial Stone

Many residents of Ackworth will now have seen the newly installed Memorial Stone situated on the grass verge beside the Pontefract Road just outside the Coop. The installation of the stone, which is a Memorial to the 15 men of the area who tragically lost their lives working in Ackworth Stone quarries during the 19th and 20th centuries. The unveiling of the stone was timed to coincide with the publication of a book by Paul Ventom entitled “The Hidden Price of Stone” which details the history of Quarries in Ackworth. This sandstone Memorial Stone has been blasted from the one remaining, working quarry in Ackworth. Anyone interested in finding out more about this subject should contact Paul Ventom on 01977613865 or e-mail paulventom@talktalk.net. Copies of Paul’s book are on sale at The Community Library on Bell Lane.

The walkers set off along Kirkthorpe Lane in the direction of Kirkthorpe and the historic 14th century Church of St Peter. As members strolled along the path through Low Wood they glimpsed a body of water known as Half Moon Lake, now a fishing lake, known only to a few of our local members. The walk eventually arrived in the pretty hamlet of Kirkthorpe with some renovated old buildings and it's church. Members enjoyed wandering around the tranquil church yard and admiring the colourful rhododendrons. The walk leader, Dean, then took members back out onto Kirkthorpe Lane where she pointed out the old village stocks. We then made our way along Green Lane back through the fields to Heath with it's lovely old buildings, Heath Hall, Heath House and the King's Arms it’s self, where awaited a most welcome refreshing drink.

The Oregano Restaurant On March 19th this year Brackenhill got a new restaurant ” The Oregano”! This restaurant, the brain child of Lauren Devine the young gogetting accountancy student, educated at Ackworth School and backed by her three brothers. Is owned independently by Ms. Devine. Lauren had already cut her teeth on a project carried out in Hemsworth by her brother’s at the Alpha, a one time run down working men’s club. At just 19 Lauren took over the management of the renovated Alpha Club and then began looking around for a similar project of her own. The old Moor Top Working Men’s Club seemed just the place and although very run down and neglected Lauren was inspired to take on the challenge. She personally spearheaded the transformation of this derelict old club into the cosy, comfortable very welcoming place it is today. The Oregano is located within the Frog and Moose Pub, the decor, furnishing and fittings were all expertly chosen by Lauren herself and it seems that there has also been a commitment to employ young local staff. Paul the Head Chef has had many years of experience and he also personally manages the restaurant. Food is freshly prepared on the premises and wherever possible ingredients purchased from local suppliers.

Lauren Devine brings the taste of the Mediterranean to Brackenhill, Ackworth! If you have not yet tasted the delights of the Oregano then “do not delay” for a surprise awaits! The menu, mostly Mediterranean, with some pub classics, has a wide and interesting choice of pasta and pizza dishes with all the usual starters and desserts. The food, freshly prepared by the smiling and welcoming young chefs, who greet you at the door, is delicious! The staff are young but whatever they might lack in experience, they wholeheartedly make up for in energy and enthusiasm. Now open every day from 12 noon the Oregano is keen to welcome lunch time trade and has introduced a special menu which includes salads and sandwiches. It also offers half portions of some pizza and pasta dishes which is helpful for young diners and those wishing for a lite bite at lunch time or even in the evening. The attractive bar area has low and high level seating and an excellent choice of drinks on display. The restaurant itself is appealing with it’s sturdy polished wood furniture and it’s decor, bright and modern, There is also a function room where wedding, parties and other events can be accommodated. So, if you are in Ackworth and whether looking for a sandwich at lunchtime, a pleasant evening drink with friends or a meal, in truly ambient surroundings, the Frog and Moose Pub and the Oregano Restaurant within, is just the place to be!

They Fell in the Great War ‘They climbed the steep hill to heaven, Through peril, toil and pain, God to us may grace be given, To follow in their train’ These words appear on the memorial screen, which is situated behind the altar in St. Cuthbert’s Church; this screen was erected by the people of Ackworth: ‘To the Glory of God and in honour of the men of this Parish who fell in the war 1914 to 1918, whose names are here recorded and whose memory they hold dear’ Following a chance meeting with an Inspector from the Commonwealth War Grave Commission, some years ago, I have since been maintaining the three war graves at All Saint’s Church and I took a lead in having them re-furbished last year, with generous support from Lancaster Memorials. I also decided to seek further information on these war heroes, with a view to publishing the details at the hundredth anniversary of their deaths, so that they might be remembered. It seemed to be a simple task, to seek information from the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s web-site; I could not have been more mistaken! I soon discovered that not all the war dead are included on the screen and that there are additional names on the Village War Memorial, I am advised that it was necessary to make application for names to be included, perhaps some relatives of other denominations did not wish to have their loved ones named in a Church of England church, or had other reasons? To date I have been able to positively identify 80% of those named in both locations, of those I am still unable to trace there are a number of reasons: more than one soldier of the same name (there are 2342 named Thomas Hughes for example) only initials to identify, doubt over ranks, no apparent association with Ackworth etc. I have the support of the Ackworth branch of the British Legion in my quest.

Those I have been unable to identify are: Joseph Boocock Edward Briscoe Edward Burland Reginald Calvert John Cartwright Harrry Clarkson Robert Coltart Ernest Cox William J Donbavand Ernest Everitt Harry Foster William Guy John William Haines Hartley Harrison, Sergeant Frank Parkin Alfred Parr Ralph Picken Wilfred R Terry, Lance Corporal Arthur Thorpe Fred Turton Albert E Ward H Walter Ward William Warrender, RN I would be grateful for any information concerning these brave men i.e. Service Number, Rank, Date of Death, Age, Regiment, Where Buried/ Commemorated, Next of Kin or Association with Ackworth. I would then be pleased to arrange for their details to be published. ‘WE WILL REMEMBER THEM’ Colin Tanswell 01977 612913

St Cuthberts & All Saints Ahhhh! Nature. It’s all over me. Get it off! Any Madagascar fans will recognize this quote. Melman the giraffe, having travelled from a zoo in America and ending up on the island of Madagascar comes running out of the jungle, onto the beach, with several leafy branches around his head, and shouts “Ahhhh! Nature. It’s all over me. Get it off!” It’s a funny moment. An animal that should be free to roam in nature, is pining for the cleanliness and clinicality which is a zoo in an American city. In other words, Melman the giraffe has lost his roots. He has forgotten where he came from. Melman is also one of the most anxious, stressed, and health conscious personalities you can meet. I wonder how many people do you know like that? I suspect that there is a little bit of Melman in all of us. This is in large part because of the society we live in, and the connections that we have to make in this world of work, school, college, university or social circles. We have to live in a world which is ordered, tidy, clean and clinical, because if we don’t, then everything will fall apart. And of course there is some truth in this. Society does indeed have to be ordered and structured, or indeed it will fall apart. But in living in this world, have we forgotten our roots, have we forgotten where we came from, and are we stressed and anxious as a result. Summer is the traditional time when we go on holiday, to recharge our batteries, and we all do this in different ways. Sunbathing on a foreign beach, walking in the countryside, action holidays at home or abroad, or just spending time with those we love. This is a good time to reconnect with who we are, and where we come from. This is re-connecting with our spirituality. Religions around the world have been spreading this message for cenruries. Christian communities in particular have been doing this through churches, monastaries, convents, places of pilgrimage, or just plainly and simply being there. I hope that everyone will rediscover something of themselves and their roots during these times of vacation, and I also hope that everyone will embrace their roots and not shun them as something alien and harmful. Melman wanted to get rid of all that made him who is really was, let us not fall into that trap. Rev Paul Fox revpaul.fox@gmail.com
