COMMUNITY NEWS OWL (Online Watch Link) Neighbourhood Watch Electronic Messaging OWL was successfully launched on 1st May 2015. Wakefield District Police have introduced a new FREE communication website called OWL. This will be used to send NHW messages and other relevant information to those registered to the site. OWL is already being used by other Police Forces and has proved a success in strengthening communication between the public and the police, resulting in significant reductions in crime.

Crime in Ackworth. Currently one of the most common crimes in Ackworth is theft from motor vehicles, often resulting in serious damage to the vehicle. ‘It only takes seconds for an opportunist thief to take valuables out of a car. Vehicle crime, or more specifically, theft from vehicles can be reduced if simple rules are followed.

1: LOCK IT! Never leave your car door unlocked or a window or sunroof open even if you at a fuel station, outside a shop or parked on your own driveway. In a recent Police Crime Prevention Operation officers on patrol were tasked to identify insecure vehicles and speak with owners. It was discovered that a large number discovered insecure were fitted with child seats. The action of removing the kids being sufficient to distract the driver who then failed to lock and secure the vehicle. Lock it or lose it!

2: REMOVE IT! It takes only a few seconds to remove valuables from a car. Nothing of any value should be left on display inside the car. Even a coat or bag or loose change might tempt a thief. At the very least lock anything of value in the boot or better still REMOVE IT completely from the vehicle.

Ackworth Historic Motor Vehicle Rally. This year’s event was again very successful, ending in beautiful Spring sunshine on the Sunday with everyone, residents, visitors and enthusiasts from far and wide, enjoying the weather and the holiday atmosphere. There was much to interest everyone from stalls, side shows, amusements, fairground rides and of course all the interesting old vehicles themselves.

The next event on the field by the Water Tower will be the Ackworth Steam Fair on July 18th -19th. Ackworth Community Church, Meets weekly upstairs in the Parish Rooms, Bell Lane, Ackworth. Sundays from 10.30am (includes Sunday School for children aged 3 - 15) A lively, welcoming church. For further details contact Ashley Guest on 01977 649320 or guest.ashley@googlemail.com

COMMUNITY NEWS The Ackworth 74 Club This month 34 Club members made their annual visit to the Pheonix Theatre Castleford to see Kippax Amateur Operatic Society perform "Oliver" which proved, once again, a very enjoyable evening. The show started with 22 children, each with their bowl of gruel, singing enthusiastically "Food Glorious Food". They continued to entertain us throughout the show with their singing & dancing. Oliver & The Artful Dodger playing the lead roles extremely well. Fagin & Nancy were very professional performers too and songs such as "Pick a pocket or two", "I'd Do Anything" and "Oom Pah Pah”, very memorable for us and had us leaving the theatre humming the tunes. An excellent performance enjoyed by us all. Next year's production will be The Producers, with a change of venue, at the Theatre Royal & Opera House, Wakefield.

It is sad to note that one of our Founder Members, Ken Bingley, has been forced into retirement after more than 55 years as an active runner, I know this for a fact as he & I ran in the 1960 National Cross- Country Championships. Ken has remained competitive into his 80’s, he became the first club member to run in 100 Park Runs last year and he currently holds twenty club veteran records, from 5k to the Marathon distances. We wish him well and look forward to seeing him at local races. Marathon mania hit the club in April with thirty three members running the full marathon distance of 26.2 miles Early in the month Terry Forrest came home first in the Huddersfield Marathon, over a tough course, in a time of 2 hours 56’10” On 12th April Simon Newton finished 138th in the Paris Marathon in 2 hours 40’10”, on the same day Roy Young completed his 95th marathon at Druridge Bay, he hopes to complete his century in October. Roy ran his first marathon twenty years ago and has completed most since reaching the age of 60. On 19th April 23 members ran the Manchester Marathon, eleven for the first time over the distance, only one failed to finish due to injury, of the others 11 ten set personal bests, first home was David Hughes in 3 hours 32’44” in addition six more ran half the distance each, in a two person relay. On 26th April 11 members ran in London, first home was Simon Newton in 2 hours 37’44 (236th) second Terry Forrest in 2 hours 41’34” (336th) in a field of over 30,000 runners, both exceptional times for club runners, Andrew Mascarenhas was next home in 3 hours 09’42”, five of the others set personal bests. A word of praise for our Joint Ladies Captain Gail Wrangles who ran in both races, within eight days of each other!
