Our great working relationship with Nostell Priory contributed greatly to the success of the Winter Handicap held on 10th January, when 89 runners (a record for the event) tackled two new routes, starting and finishing in the Park, it was great to see so many of our new members running. Twenty one beat their handicap over the longer ten mile course and thirteen over the shorter 5.3 mile route. The integrity of the handicapper was re-confirmed when he finished well down the field. First on handicap in the longer race was Helen Wainright, second Lindsey Raistrick, third Ashley Tazzyman, Fastest Terry Forrest (58’00”) fastest lady Rebecca Winter (66’36”). In the shorter race, first on handicap was Janet Barr, second Andrew Parkes, third Sarah Turner, fastest Neil Holt (42’01). Terry Forrest and Simon Newton continued to monopolise the highest placings in the Nostell & Pontefract Park Runs, with five first, two second and one third between them. Terry also travelled over the Pennines to finish third in the Birkenhead Park Run.

1st Ackworth Scout Group has started its Centenary Celebrations by undertaking an exciting Night Hike round Nostell Priory with permission from the National Trust. Other events already planned this year involve a weekend away at Woolley Scout Campsite in February, March sees a big get together at The Mill in Castleford, where anyone who has been connected with Cubs in the last 100 years are invited to join in. Anyone interested in joining Cubs in this special year can come along to Ackworth Howard's School Tuesday evenings 6.30 - 8p.m. Younger children can attend Beavers who meet at 5.15 6.15, and 11 - 14year olds can join Scouts. Rebecca Winter finished the 2015 Lakeland Trails Series in the top position and Adrian Leach currently lies second in the Run Britain (M50) 5000metres track series. Wendy & Steve Berry continued the attraction for Australia, by club members by running in Park Runs at Claisebrook Cove, Perth, Menai, Sydney & Cronulla, Sydney. On 31st January twenty members competed in the Nostel Night Run, which saw 242 runners threading their way around the park & grounds, the lights amongst the trees, from their head torches, being a real spectacle. The 2015 Grand Prix saw fierce competition in each of the leagues, none more so than in League 1 where Ian Richardson manged to scape home by only four points from Rebecca Winter, with Darren Horrobin third. The other league winners were Tim Ashby, Guy Malam & Caroline Copeland. In the ladies league Rebecca this time managed to edge out Liane Warren by again a narrow margin of three points with Hayley Hawthorne third. The leading male Vet was Trevor Nichol with Liane Warren the leading lady Vet.

St Cuthberts & All Saints The Shack This is the title of a book by William Paul Young and well worth reading. It tells the story of a man who suffers the tragedy of the abduction of his young daughter, and in part, the effect that has on his family life. But that is only the beginning of the book, and is not the main plot. The main part of the book is how he comes to terms with all of that when he meets God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, literally, in the shack. Hence the title. It is a fascinating book, which challenges many assumptions that are made about God, and how many people, including Christians, perceive God. It is a book which is full of theology, but only in the background. What is displayed is a slow understanding of what it is all about, and how it all fits together. The main character, Mack, has a multitude of questions to ask, but has even more questions after the many conversations he has. The book is written in a way that allows the reader to enter into the story, and side with Mack on many occasions, when questioning God. It allows the reader space, to think through some of the implications of what is said or explained, or even not explained. Mack is a character with whom we can all identify, because we are all full of questions. Questions about life, about why things happen, about why things don’t happen, about why things hgappen in a certain way, or to certain people. There is no end to the questions that people ask. This is true of all of us, no matter how much we think we know, or understand about the world around us, material or spiritual. The more we learn, the more questions we are likely to have. The Churches Together in Ackworth understand this, and most years, we put on a course specifically for this purpose. This year we are running The Alpha Course, which is a way of looking at what questions people have, and what answers might be put forward. More details can be found on page 4 of the Arrow. The Shack is a book I would thoroughly recommend to anyone, from those who have no professed belief in any god, to those who think they have read most theological points. Simply because it questions our long held beliefs, and stimulates us to move closer to the answers, and to the truth. Rev Paul Fox – revpaul.fox@gmail.com
