Spend some time with your Mum This Mothers Day

F

ed up with flowers and chocolates as the usual choice for Mother’s Day gifts? Are you looking for something a bit different? Something with a bit more meaning….

As we all know, spending quality time with Mum is normally an occasional treat, a chat over coffee and cake or maybe Sunday Lunch. When it comes to Mothers Day we look to buy a little something to show our appreciation. The Ramblers is encouraging people to treat their Mum to a stroll in the great out doors. What ever your thing, whether it be a gentle stroll taking in the scenery or a more challenging trek, the time spent with your Mum will become a treasured memory. I remember the first (and last) time I climbed a mountain I was with my Mum. It was also her first climb and although we did not have to scramble on all fours, the sense of achievement was amazing and to have shared that moment was very special. The scenery was breath taking and the picnic was guilt free!

Some local routes to try Historical Walk round Lepton and Kirkheaton No 5 4.8km/3.0 miles—2 hours Leisurely This walk takes in west/south of Lepton over Cowmes Common and land owned by the Dartmouth family. It passes up Rowley Lane, before returning on one of the ancient lanes through Lepton's open field system. Two alternatives routes are included.

Heron way—2 Wadworth Yorks Members only 9.3km/5.8 miles—2 hours 30 mins Moderate This is a pleasant walk, mostly along tracks, some within Wadworth Woods and some in open countryside. There are a couple of short sections on road, although only one of these Long Gate - can be a busy road.

No matter what your Mum’s fitness level, there is sure to be a route which suits her ability as they all come with a difficulty rating. There is lots of information about the routes so you can check out which walk would be best before venturing out. This can of course be done for free as the Ramblers website offers many routes free of charge, or you can purchase a membership for your Mum which opens up over 45,000 group led walks every year, full access to Ramblers routes, quarterly editions of Walk magazine and more. So You Don’t Think You Can Have… A Palm Tree You don’t need to live in the Mediterranean to own a stunning Palm tree! It seems that everyone I speak to about Palm trees that comes into Bentley’s thinks Palm trees are just for summer and need to be in warm climates, this is not true. I think this fallacy is because we mainly see Palm trees when we are on holiday. The Trachycarpus Palm and Chamaerops Palm are very hardy and will manage temperatures as low as minus twenty. Most Palm trees are from very inhospitable places where one minute it’s really wet and the next very dry, very windy (that’s why the leaves have fingers so the wind blows through them) or no wind or very hot one minute (up to 45 degrees) and very cold the next. In short Palm trees are very adaptable and take very little to look after. Palm trees come in many sizes and shapes. All are stunning and give great dramatics to any space. They don’t just come in many sizes but in all price ranges. We stock palms from £20 up to £500 so if you would like some advice on buying a Palm tree, just drop in and we will only be too pleased to advise you. A Mini Orchard Now I am the first to admit that I have never found fruit trees exciting, nor have I ever wanted an orchard but it seems that fruit trees are more than just a few trees in what looks like an old field/ unkempt lawn area (orchard). Until you have read up on Espaliering (grow flat/space saving) or Patio fruit trees, you wont realise that a fruit tree can be a great addition to any space; patio, deck, wall or even used to create a hedge. The only problem with fruit trees is that for a few months of the year, they look like a dead twig, but once they start to blossom, they look stunning and the scent from the blossom is fantastic, and on top of your patio Apple, Pear, Plum, Cherry tree looking and smelling great it will give you a real crop of fruit. Normally the fruit is larger than fruit from an adult tree and it grows more fruit. Just imagine, you’re sat on your patio in your relaxed space (we helped you create) with all the great products, plants and planters, plus free design advice from Bentleys and you reach over and pluck a ripe fresh Apple from your patio Apple tree. You may well have not thought about this! Come see us at Bentley’s and we will show you many more things…….You Didn’t think you could have. Bentleys of Pontefract, Outdoor Lifestyle Centre, Wakefield Road, Pontefract. We’re just by the main lights in Pontefract (Look for the Palm trees and Olive trees). Open Tuesday – Sunday. So much to see and so much free advice and help. PLUS we deliver everything FREE.

St Cuthberts & All Saints Mindfulness Mindfulness is a bit of a buzz word, and is becoming quite popular among some people. Certainly in the NHS it is being talked of more and more. But what exactly is it? And what is so new about it? To be mindful, means to be aware, to take care. So to be mindful of something, means to be aware of, or take care of something. But the point of mindfulness, is to be aware of yourself, and to take care of yourself. It seems that every generation finds itself in a faster moving world than the previous generation, and today is no different. The pace seems to quicken with the communication revolution that we live in at the moment. What this means is, that we are trying harder and harder to keep up with the pace of change. Anyone who works in business will know that more and more hours are being devoted to work, and less and less time is being devoted to leisure time. What this means is that people give less and less time to themselves. It takes no time at all for stress to build up, and eventually take over. At this point the individual is unable to work properly or concentrate, because of the stress. Stress is a modern disease we are told, and one cause, is the lack of self awareness, or self care. Mindfulness is a way of addressing this. Basically, mindfulness is about taking time out, to relax, to stop, and to sit quietly, even if it only for a few minutes. To concentrate on yourself, even as simple as recognizing your breathing. It helps to counter some of the stresses of the day, and helps the concentration. But this is not really a new concept. Christians have been aware of this for centuries. But even centuries before Christ, those who followed the Buddhist way of life practiced meditation in the same way. This, is not a difficult or complex process. At the heart of meditation, is the art of resting, silently, and concentrating not on the affairs of the world, but on Sunday Services your own body. The Buddhist practice of 8:30am Communion All Saints Church meditation aims to bring the individual into a state 10:15am Communion St Cuthbert's Church of insight. The mindfulness practice of meditation 15:30pm Afternoon Worship All Saints Church aims to bring greater awareness of yourself. The Christian practice of meditation aims to do both Monday-Thursday 9:00am Morning Prayer St Cuthbert's Church these things, but with an extra dimension. The 5:00pm Evening Prayer St Cuthbert's Church Christian believe is in a God who created the universe and everything in it, including you and me. Wednesday If, through meditation, one can gain greater insight 9:30am Holy Communion All Saints Church into the world, and also greater awareness of Thursday oneself, then one gains a greater knowledge of, and 10:00am Coffee Morning All Saints Church gets closer to God, who created both these things. 14:00pm Self help drop-in All Saints Church It is a holistic approach to life, which as a Christian, I would thoroughly recommend. Whatever your aims, whatever your need, I would recommend meditation as a way of living in the world. Web sites and Apps such as those hosted by The World Community for Christian Meditation are a useful resource in this respect. Your local church should also be able to help.
