COMMUNITY NEWS Golden Jubilee Celebrations! This year Contact The Elderly celebrates 50 years of working to combat loneliness and isolation amongst older people living in our communities. On Sunday April 19th it is estimated that over 5000 people, hosts, drivers and guests from Contact The Elderly groups across the UK gathered together to celebrate with the biggest tea party the charity has ever staged! Here in Ackworth the 50th Anniversary Tea Party was held by the Ackworth and Pontefract Group in the welcoming home of local residents, John and Jennifer McNichol. Eight guests were entertained to a delicious afternoon tea which included sandwiches, home made cakes and sherry trifle. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the celebration. The afternoon concluded with a hilarious game of Beetle. All the guests expressed their appreciation to John and Jennifer for their kindness in hosting the Tea and also said how much they valued the monthly Tea Parties as an opportunity to get out and about, socialise and make new friends. The Charity, which won the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award for Volunteering, is always keen to attract new volunteer's and to hear of older people who might like to join their local group. John Bell became the second Ackworth Road Runner to run in 100 Park Runs at Pontefract on 4th April. The 25th running of the Ackworth Half Marathon took place over an amended course on 12th April, after a break of six years by popular request. There were 350 entrants of whom 291 completed the course. The weather was ideal for long distance running, cloudy and chilly, but a strengthening wind was a distinct handicap for the back markers. The race winner was Jason Cherriman of Leeds City AC in a time of 1 hour 12 minutes 04 seconds, second was Terry Forrest of Cairngorm Runners, who is a second claim member for Ackworth RR in 1 hour 14’47”, third was Christopher Ward of Wakefield & District Harriers in 1 hour 18’07”. The first lady was Sarah Cumber of Halifax Harriers in 1 hour 25’ 23”. For Ackworth the next finisher was Ian Richardson in 1 hour 28’35” followed by Craig Daniels in 1 hour 33’53 then Andrew Mascarenhas in 1 hour 37’45”. For the ladies the first club member home was Rebecca Winter, welcome back from an extended visit to America, in 1 hour 37’ 52” followed by Liane Warren in 1 hour 42’12” and Jennifer Dews in 1 hour 52’ 43” The first Ackworth resident to finish was Russell Simpson in 1 hour 38’25” The winner of the men’s over 60 age group was Martin Stearn in 1 hour 41’30” This race was good preparation for a number of members about to run the London & Manchester marathons later in the month. COMMUNITY NEWS The Ackworth 74 Club April Meeting

On Tuesday April 14th the ladies of the Ackworth 74 Club enjoyed an amusing talk given by a retired village butcher. Frank Wright. Frank began his career in butchering in 1952 working as a14 year old part time butcher boy. Frank, who admitted he had been tempted into butchering by the smell of Pork Pies, went on to complete a 3 year apprenticeship and spent a further 32 years working as a butcher in the Mirfield and Heckmondwike area. As a young lad Frank remembered selling bacon and sausage etc when the cost included calculations in farthings! One of his most amusing recollection was his involvement with a Cub Scout Charity venture when a large frying pan measuring 6 feet 6 inches in diameter was constructed in order to cook a record breaking sausage 450 feet 6 inches long! Frank was thanked for his talk, accepted tea and biscuits and stayed on chatting with members. Pat Lawson then outlined the Summer Programme of Events for the Club. Ladies Please Note!

The next 74 Club Meeting at the Methodist School Room will be September 8th! During May, June and July Members will be out and about enjoying varying activities. There is no meeting in August. May 12th, Members will be at The Phoenix Theatre Castleford enjoying a performance of “Oliver” by Kippax Amateur Operatic Society. June 9th, Members meet for Summer Evening Walk July 14th, Members Summer Outing to Skipton for shopping and Canal Boat Trip.

St Cuthberts & All Saints Choices, choices, choices! As I write, we are in the middle of election fever. There are press reports and news items and party political broadcasts left right and center. “Vote for me!” Says one person. “Vote for me!” Says the next. Or, “Don’t vote for them!” is a common cry. Some people are all excited about it. Some are bored by the whole thing. Whatever the view, the most important thing, is that we have a choice. Throughout our lives we will make lots of choices, every day we make choices. Some are really important choices, some are trivial. Shall I have toast or cereal for breakfast? Shall I wear purple or orange today? Which career shall I follow? Whom shall I marry? Where shall I live? These are some of the choices we may have to make in our lives. Some choices are relatively easy to make. Some are particularly difficult. The issue here, is consequence. Some decisions we make will have little consequence. Some decisions we make will have a massive consequence, not just for ourselves, but also for those around us, possibly also other people in the country, and possibly also, people in other countries. We all make decision based on our values. That set of criteria that we all develop as we grow and develop which help us to make our decisions. The question then, is where do our values come from. For most people, they develop from experience of life, as a child, as a teenager, and as an adult. Some values we absorb from others, especially our families and friends, but mostly it is the life experiences that we have which will determine how we think, about ourselves, and about the world around us. Some of those experiences may well be spiritual experiences. Experiences which seem to come from somewhere else, often difficult to define, but often involving the emotions. Once we start experiencing emotions, which seem to come from outside of ourselves, then we are moving in a spiritual plane. My belief is that God has created us that way, so that we can experience those things, and also experience God’s presence with us. Of course we all have the choice to ignore those things, and ignore or even deny God. The most important thing is that we have a choice. God gives us that choice. The difficult thing however, is weighing up the consequences of that choice. My hope for everyone, is that they will weigh up the consequences of the choices that they make, trivial and important, but most of all, the eternal choices. And may we all make the right choice. Ever since December 6th 2001 Ladies from the Parish have served coffee every Thursday morning throughout the year. The Coffee Mornings began originally to raise money to fit out a kitchen and install a toilet in All Saints’ Church. In the beginning providing the coffee without the benefit of running water or a sink was quite a challenge for the original team of ladies from All Saints’ and St. Cuthbert’s were Ann Attack, Stella Hall, Wendy Leybourn and Sue Tanswell.

Coffee, Cake and Community Support Raises Over £59,000!

At that very first Coffee Morning in 2001 only two elderly ladies came along to enjoy the coffee and sit together chatting in the church. However, within a very short space of time, just two or three weeks, numbers grew steadily and the word soon spread throughout the village that All Saints’ Church on Thursday mornings was the place to find a coffee and people, both men and women, eager to socialise, exchange news, views and gossip. The Ladies quickly recognised that it wasn’t just coffee they were providing but they were also fulfilling a need within the community by providing a meeting place and promoting good fellowship within the village, whilst at the same time they were able to raise the much needed funding for their project. It took a lot of coffee and cake and hard work but a little over eight years later, enough money had been raised or, donated to enable the work to commence. The kitchen and toilet were installed in 2010. By now though, the Coffee Mornings at All Saints’ had become such an essential part of village life that it was clear they would need to continue and develop. Delicious home made cakes now replaced the humble biscuit. Their hard work and efforts, together with the continued loyal support they regularly receive from the members of the community, have made the Coffee Mornings a resounding success! Fourteen years on the Coffee Mornings are still flourishing and enjoyed by everyone who attends. Often, during the two hour session each week, up to 40 residents of Ackworth and the surrounding area meet and enjoy this facility. A small group of Service Users from the Kinsley Day Opportunities Centre also attend regularly, supported by staff and they particularly enjoy the tasty cakes on offer. The ladies of the team make and donate these cakes themselves but also now cakes are made and donated by other Coffee Morning regulars and supporters. Coffee and Tea is also donated so costs can be kept to a bare minimum.

The current team volunteers, include all the original members, plus Janet Taverner and Jean Hancocks. However, it was Sue Tanswell, Wendy Leybourn and Stella Hall who were on duty in the kitchen on the morning I attended. All these ladies can be justifiably proud of the funds raised to date, by their efforts and those of the other volunteers involved in the Coffee Mornings, an amount which now totals over £59,101!

There is now also a paperback book exchange and each month from Apr. to Nov. there is a Table Top Fair, proceeds donated to the Church. Other special events take place throughout the year and at Christmas pupils from Bell Lane School come to sing. So do come along too and help to ensure that this village venture continues to be enjoyed by residents, now and well into the future!
