Baden Powell, the founder of the Scout movement was a man of adventure and lover of the great outdoors. He reputedly slept on his balcony in all weathers, Winter and Summer alike. The SCOUTS of 1st Ackworth are carrying on his fine tradition - not by sleeping on their balconies, but rather in tents even in Winter time. This hardy group of youngsters enjoyed a weekend in camp, aptly named, ‘Freezer Camp’, which was held at Hesley Wood Scout campsite in early February. Although the weather this Winter has been fairly mild generally speaking, the weekend of the camp was one of the times when the temperature plummeted, it was so cold in fact that all the water in the water carriers froze solid! However all survived and managed to undertake such activities as climbing, abseiling, archery, a cave bus, rifle shooting, crate stacking and quad biking. Another Winter activity saw them one weekend visiting Fairborn Ings Nature Reserve. Troop nights saw them covering various elements of the Fire Safety badge and working towards their Photography badge. Scouting certainly covers a range of activities and interests both indoors and outdoors, there’s something for everyone whatever your interests are.
The CUB section has also been out and about during the Winter months. They’ve enjoyed visiting Newmillerdam and have been work in towards higher levels of their Hikes away badge.
The BEAVER section has been concentrating on Activity badges. They worked on the Safety badge where they learned about the Green Cross Code, water safety, stranger danger elements, and the dangers to be found in their homes and meeting place. They also found out what to do in a fire and how to call the emergency services.
In their Health and Fitness badge they took part in obstacle courses, had slalom relays, tried skipping and played games such as Crab football. They also monitored their heartbeats both before and after exercise. They enjoyed making and eating healthy snacks.
For their Communicator badge they had to know their own phone number, be able to make a phone call and send an email or text message. They also tried spelling their name in Morse and Semaphore.
Congratulations go to Daniel Fish who has achieved the Bronze Chief Scot Award, the highest award Beaver can gain.

Soroptimist International is a global volunteer movement for women working together to transform the lives of women and girls, with nearly 72000 members in 121 countries. The majority of members belong to their local club, where they can make friends with like -minded women and work on projects – local, national and international, always with an aim to educate, enable and empower women and girls to reach their full potential.
Wakefield and District club is quite small, with 23 members but we have been involved in many projects over recent years and have formed partnerships with Mary’s Meals, The Prince’s Trust, Wakefield City of Sanctuary, Askham Grange prison, Barnardo’s Young Carers. We have planted lots of trees, donated several Dementia robotic cats and have sponsored a Blue Plaque in Wakefield to recognise the work of Florence Beaumont in the campaign for women’s rights and suffrage.
In the coming year we will be helping Homestart in Wakefield, and we will be working with Action for Children at the mother and baby unit at New Hall prison, providing them with clothing, nappies etc. We are a friendly club, enjoying various social activities, both local and across Yorkshire and in February 2024 we celebrated our 90th birthday.
We meet at St. Paul’s church, The Balk, Walton every 2nd and 4th Thursday, 7.30pm, alternating meetings between business and speaker/social. You will be made very welcome if you would like to come along one evening to find out more about our activities.
