COMMUNITY NEWS Ackworth Parish Council Drop In. Every 4th Tuesday in the Month. 1pm – 3pm For the last seven and a half years Parish Councillor John Evans and his wife Joyce have hosted the Parish Council Drop In session at the Community Centre on Bell Lane on the 4th Tuesday of each month. These sessions are open to all Ackworth residents and are very popular with some of the older residents. Each month approximately 30 40 Ackworth residents regularly attend and obviously greatly enjoy these sessions. The Drop In is funded by an annual grant of £500 from the Parish Council who also provide the room, heating and lighting. The grant helps to provide the free drinks, tea / coffee and sweet and savoury snacks which are served during the interval in the games of Bingo which, as well and the social get together and exchange of news and information, attending residents can enjoy. During the session there is also a raffle run by Betty Johnson and the proceeds from this go to provide funding for a Christmas Party with entertainment, for regular attenders and also an outing, usually to a coastal resort, sometime during the Summer months. Other trips are also organised at various time throughout the year but members then have to pay just travel costs. John told me that although the session tends to be more popular with the ladies, they do have gentlemen who attend regularly and who volunteer to make the tea. Indeed, it is a gentleman, Brian Lee, who is in charge of running the free Bingo sessions, acting as caller and ensuring it is good fun but also fair. Any Ackworth residents who think they might like to find out more about the Drop In Session are most welcome to just come along on the 4th Tuesday in the month 1 pm – 3 pm or, contact the Council Office on 01977 611583. COMMUNITY NEWS Ackworth Road Runners Members have run far and wide this month, but firstly hats off the Mel Owen, who completed the Ladybower 50 mile race on 20th September. Mel & her husband Tim are off to Australia shortly to visit two exmembers who have emigrated there, no doubt we will hear of more running exploits from them in Oz. Rebecca Winter ran the fastest half marathon by a lady this year, at the Vale of York on 20th September, a personal best of 92’23” she also completed, along with four other members three of whom ran personal best times in the Loch Ness Marathon, in a time of 3 hours 19’55” Terry Forrest, returning to home turf, was 5th in this race in 2 hours 40’18” On 27th September Simon Newton ventured abroad again to compete in the Berlin Marathon, he finished in 2 hours 55’12” despite becoming injured during the race. Another big milestone during the month, in addition to the club celebration of 30 year existence, was Roy Young completing his 100th marathon at Mablethorpe on 3rd October. All his runs have been since 1997, with fifty six since reaching the age of 60 five years ago. Perhaps he will now be aiming to break Ken Bingley’s personal record of 115. 41 members ran in the Tissington Trail Half Marathon on 3rd October, first home was Ian Richardson in 85’58”, Gail Tombs, Martin Stearn & Trevor Nichol picked up prizes for being first in their age groups. Park Runs have become a must for many club runners with forty or more of our members now regularly running at Nostel, Pontefract and elsewhere.

Please can you help? The Ackworth and Pontefract group of Contact The Elderly are seeking to recruit new volunteer Drivers and Hosts. Contact the Elderly is a charity which aims to combat loneliness and isolation felt by older people living alone. The Charity organises Sunday afternoon tea parties once a month for older guests, aged over 75 and living alone, especially those who need the opportunity to get out and about and socialise. Volunteer Drivers pick up older guests from their home and escort them safely to the home of a Volunteer Host. The Host provides an afternoon tea and lots of friendly conversation. Could you be a Volunteer Driver just one Sunday a month, 6/7 times a year, for about 3 hours? Do you have a warm and welcoming home and like entertaining? Could you host a tea party 3 pm – 5 pm, just once a year for 6/7 older residents? For more information, or to attend a tea party and meet the guests and find out more before making a commitment, then contact Sue Smith-Wilkins on 01977 615608 or visit contact-the-elderly.org.uk or call Yorkshire Officer Kath Lloyd on 01535 280002 or email Kath Lloyd on kath.lloyd@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

This month, instead of the programmed talk on Fungi by Malcolm Greaves, who was unable to attend, the Members enjoyed an interesting talk on The Georgians delivered by Beryl and Barbara, volunteers at Nostell Priory, who stepped in at short notice. The talk emphasised how the Georgians witnessed the birth of industrialisation; radicalism and repression; and how extreme luxury existed alongside extreme poverty.

At the next meeting on Nov 10th and just in time for Christmas, Members will have the opportunity to enjoy a Gift Wrapping Demonstration by Jo Thompson. New Members always welcome.

Planning for Spring

On a cool September evening Ackworth 1st Rainbow unit were already planning for Spring, as they gathered in the grounds of the Parish Rooms to plant Daffodil bulbs. Assisted by their Leaders Sue Malyan and Maureen Richardson, known to the unit as Poppy and Bluebell, with help also from Leader Hayley Siddall and two Girl Guides, who are hoping to gain their Leadership badges, the Rainbows busily dug holes and planted both Miniature and Standard Daffodils. It is hoped that visitors to the Bell Lane Centre will enjoy the colourful display in the Spring. Arrow Readers should watch out for a photo of the end result of all this effort in one of our Spring issues! The 1st Ackworth Rainbows are all girls aged 5yrs – 7 yrs who meet in the Parish Rooms each Thursday evening at 5.30 pm. Rainbows are the youngest section of the Girl Guide movement. Each Rainbow unit and Ackworth has two, 2nd Ackworth Rainbows who meet on Wednesday evenings at the same time, has up to 18 members. Just like the older sections of the Guiding movement who work to gain badges, the Rainbows work on badges too but they work together as a group, not individually, for each of their badges. At the moment the 1st Ackworth Rainbows are working on their Autumn Badge which involved planting the bulbs and going on aa Autumn walk. They also play games, do various activities, go on outings and best of all make new friends! Later this month they will be having a Halloween Disco and attending a performance of Disney on Ice. It has been an eventful year for the Ackworth Rainbows as they celebrated 25 years this year, of Rainbows in Ackworth. In May they had an Anniversary Tea Party to which parents and other Guiders were invited. They had a beautiful Rainbow cake made by an ex Rainbow Mum and also had made a Special Anniversary Badge. Any parents wishing to put their daughter’s name down for Rainbows should apply by contacting Girlguiding UK on their web site www.girlguiding.org.uk and then put in their details on the JOIN US section.
