Editor’s letter... The very first Arrow magazine, The Branton & Auckley Arrow, started this month ten years ago. In October 2005, my plan was to provide a magazine which helped to keep the local community informed of events that would help bring them together and share good news about life in our villages. I took over the Ackworth Review in February 2014 and renamed it the Ackworth Arrow. The community model is still and always will be at the heart of what we do and I thank everyone who contributes to the Ackworth Arrow and allows me to share your news and events with your community. Sue Wilkin Smith has been instrumental in making this happen. I hope you enjoy reading about the Ackworth Pram Race and all the other events that take place in this bustling village. If you would like to share your teams sporting triumphs, or your groups fund raising, or anything else which makes Ackworth what it is, please do get in touch. Deadline for the November issue is Friday 16th October. The November Arrow will be delivered by the first week in November.

Best wishes

COMMUNITY NEWS

CRAFTY FUND-RAISING Ackworth Community Library is holding it’s second annual craft fair to raise funds to maintain and develop library services.

Broken Footbridge.

Concern about the broken footbridge on Footpath 13 beside the Went from Low Farm towards the Six Arches has been reported to the Public Rights of Way Dept and David Holdsworth Footpath Officer said, "We have been investigating the most efficient and cost effective way of providing a new bridge, for example a bridge designed and installed by the Council, or using an external contractors. Either way, our Engineers are keen for a structure to be installed here of a standard that will remain for many years to come. We have also been looking to identify the necessary funding”. Ackworth residents look forward to hearing when they can expect the footbridge to be repaired. Anyone concerned about this footbridge may wish to register their own concerns by ringing David on 01924 306049 or emailing dholdsworth@wakefield.gov.uk

The craft fair will be held on Saturday, 17th October from 9.30 to 3.30 at Ackworth Village Club which is situated on Wakefield Road, Ackworth, opposite the Esso garage. Craft fair organiser and volunteer, Brenda Goulding stated 'following the great success of last years event, and the demand from the public and stallholders to repeat the event, we are delighted that Ackworth Village Club have agreed to host our second autumn craft fair. 14 stalls will be offering a range of crafts from decoupage, chalk boards, personalised wooden items, handmade Christmas gifts and knitted goods . The library is now open 6, half days per. week and is offering more activities for adults and children than before but we still rely solely on donations and fundraising events such as this. We hope that local people will show the same support for the event as last year. We expect the day to be fun whilst raising the profile of the library within the community and the need for funding and volunteers’. Further details of the craft fair, other fund-raising events and activities at the library are available on their website at www.ackworthcommunitylibrary.co.uk

Ackworth Community Library are holding a coffee morning on the 2nd Friday of every month.

Local residents cannot have failed to notice all the activity at the Beverley Arms, a well known public house, standing as it does, in a prime position on the roundabout and at the junction of two of the busiest roads in the area.

It’s all happening at The Beverley Arms!

The Beverley Arms has had a somewhat chequered history during the past few years but hopefully now all that will change as it brings its own particular brand of restaurant dining to the village. For the Beverley Arms was recently acquired by a well known restaurant chain Ego Mediterranean, who now have a 20 year lease on the property. The Beverley Arms will be the tenth restaurant in the portfolio of this successful chain and the second situated within a former pub. Following a ½ million pound refurbishment the restaurant opened on September 7thand serves affordable food in pleasant surroundings. A varied menu is offered incorporating the very best of Mediterranean Fayre, Spanish, Italian, French, Greek and Turkish combined with quality classic pub food and service and will stock, as well as the usual beers, lagers and spirits, several Cask Ales. The Restaurant caters for 140 diners at any one time and a further 48 can be seated in an external, heated terraced area. The main menu is available from 11am -11 pm with a typical lunch menu from £7.95 and in the evening a couple may have two courses and two bottles of wine for £19.95! Speciality nights will feature, amongst others, Tues. Steak Night, Wed. Tapas with Kebabs on Thurs. And diners who take up the offer to become members will be able to avail themselves of a 25% discount.

On Tuesday Sept 8th Club Members enjoyed a very sociable evening at their first meeting following the Summer break. Five new members were welcomed and joined existing members to enjoy a Line Dancing session led by Club member, Joan Anderson, who runs her own Line Dancing class in the Parish Rooms every Wednesday afternoon. During a break in the dancing, members were treated to a Pea and Pie Summer organised by Club Secretary, Pat Lawson and Committee Member Linda Parsons and assisted by Jean Oldroyd and Jean Moxon. The usual refreshment's were, this month, served by Members Pam Smith, Jenny Jones, and Hazel Duffield. Another Committee Member Helen Griffiths hosted the whole evening and organised an interesting and challenging Quiz which was won by Kath Farmery’s team which included one of the new members! The Bring and Buy Sale was well supported and Members were able to take home some real bargains! The money raised went to Club funds. The evening ended with more Line Dancing. Everyone agreed that the event had been a great start to the Autumn Season for the Club. The next 74 Club Meeting is on Tuesday October 13th 7.30 pm in the Methodist Chapel Schoolroom when members will hear a talk by Malcolm Greaves, an expert on Fungi. So, whether you enjoy eating them or want to know how to spot the poisonous variety, you should find the talk informative. New members are always welcome for further details

Triumphant Return of the Ackworth Pram Race!

The Pram Race was first organised in Ackworth during the 1970’s as an idea to raise money to help two local boys, orphaned at a very young age. These two same” boys” Kevin and Andrew Nicholls were present this year and it was Kevin who addressed the competitors and spectators gathered on Carr Bridge playing field for the start of this year’s Race. A Stig look-a-like started the Race and in total 15 'prams' entered, in all shapes and sizes and all of the competitors were in fancy dress. There was a great deal of hilarity at the antics of the Pushers and Riders as the “prams” set off on the 2 mile course throughout the village, calling in at The Masons and The Angel Inns along the way, then finally to the Boot and Shoe Pub and the finish at the Ackworth Cricket Club where the organisers had provided children's rides, bouncy castles and a variety of stalls, including those selling food and drink. Hundreds of people lined the route, cheering and clapping the competitors and were present at the finish. The race was won by The Mortar Boys (Jordans Builders) and prizes were also awarded to the best “pram” and best fancy dress. Other local businesses entered “prams” including the Coop, Ackworth Autoserve, and all made gallant efforts to finish the course. The idea to resurrect the race came from Alan Martin who recruited John Atha Andy Wright, Kenny McCluskey, Linda Pepworth, Brian Briggs and Alan Roberts. The planning and preparation took 9 months in total and the organisers had fantastic support from a host of sponsors for which they were extremely grateful. All their hard work and effort really paid off as the Ackworth Pram Race was a resounding success and raised over £4,500 for the Prince of Wales Hospice! Well Done Alan and your team and to everyone who supported the Event! It seems the Pram Race is now set to become a regular Ackworth event and will be something looked forward to by the local residents.

St Cuthberts & All Saints Rain, rain, and more rain. We will all have our stories to tell of the storms that battered us at the end of August. I had just mowed the lawn, and unplugged the mower, when I felt a spot of rain. From then on was the deluge. I have fond memories of heavy rain and storms, standing at the window with my son, and just watching the rain fall heavily. We would often stand on his bed and look out of his window and down the street and in the garden, to see the effects this had. Now he has left home, I still do the same thing. There is something about a storm which is worth watching. On this day I watched as a cloud moved more than swiftly across the sky, and the trees around us started swirling, and then constant thunder accompanied by the heaviest of rain. Then I saw the damage to trees around us, and the next day, saw the damage to trees around the village. Nature is a beautiful thing, to look at, in terms of flowers, and tress, and animals, and landscapes. It is also a beautiful thing to watch when it is dynamic, as when animals and plants support each other in terms of food and shelter. It is also beautiful when it shows its power, in terms of the weather, or seismic activity. But there comes a point when it’s beauty becomes dangerous. A hurricane seen from space is a beautiful thing. A hurricane seen from the ground is a frightening dangerous thing. October is the time of year when the church celebrates Harvest. Giving thanks to God for the produce of the harvest. And our churches and schools will have celebrated this event by the time you read this, in terms of Harvest Thanksgiving service, a schools concert at St Cuthbert’s church, a harvest supper, a harvest fair, a ceildh. At this time we give thanks, that the beauty of nature has provided for our needs, and that in general we have avoided the danger of nature. It is a time when we can join together and celebrate nature, and wonder at it’s awesome beauty, without falling into the dangerous trap of worshipping nature itself. The Christian Church revels in the beauty of nature, but we revel even more in the beauty of the creator of nature. As we give thanks for harvest, for nature, and natural beauty. Let us consider who we give thanks to, and for. Rev Paul Fox Revpaul.fox@gmail.com
