Editor’s letter... Welcome to the September issue of the Ackworth Arrow. I hope you enjoy reading some of our interesting articles. The Scouts have an informative article on who they are and what they do, if you have a child or children aged 6 plus, it is really worth reading. The Ackworth Arrow is growing in popularity. Local residents look forward to their monthly copy, delivered free to every home in the village. Local business people who advertise in the Arrow have found it very beneficial. Clubs and organisations whose activities have been featured in the Arrow have also reaped the benefit. The Ackworth 74 Club has seen their membership increase by 25% since the Club’s activities have been reported in the Arrow. Residents have been heard to say they like the Arrow as it only has “Good News” every article is positive, interesting and informative. If you would like to see your club, society or organisation featured in the Arrow contact Sue on 01977 615608. If you know of anyone in the village who does not yet receive their monthly copy of the Arrow please let me know. Deadline for the September issue is Friday 28th August. The September Arrow will be delivered the first week in September.

Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 01302 534256 / 07795 387937 Email: michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk

Down Memory Lane Join us at the newly formed Ackworth Singing Group For people in the early to moderate stages of dementia and their carers. Down Memory Lane is the brain child of Ackworth resident and retired Primary School Headteacher, Julie Davis. In May this year Julie started her Singing Group and she insists it is not a choir, so no experience necessary! The singing group is intended for people with early to moderate stages of dementia and their carers. It meets every Wednesday afternoon between 1 pm and 3 pm to sing, dance and move to music in a friendly and informal setting. The music is all post 1940’s and will be familiar to everyone, including music from the shows such as” Singing in the Rain” and “Do-Re-Mi” and all the old favourites such as “Bring Me Sunshine” and ”Killing Me Softly With His Song ”. There is always a break for refreshments and conversation and so group members can get to know each other and develop friendships. Julie is keen to promote the work of the group and to attract new members. If you know of anyone in the area who might benefit from such a group then please pass on the information. Contact Julie Davis 07950 825094 / j.e.davis9@btinternet.com for further details. In liaison with Alzheimer’s Society, Wakefield – 01924 373264 / wakefield@alzheimers.org.uk

Ackworth Road Runners in association with the National Trust hosted the Priory 5 & 10k races in the parkland of Nostel Priory on the 15th July, this was the fifth year for the 10k & the second for the 5k. As seems usual we were again lucky with the weather, ideal for the officials but perhaps a little warm for the runners. The entry was a little disappointing with 303 runners completing the longer race and 92 the shorter one. There was a fine close finish in the 10k with Rob James (Unattached) 35'29" outsprinting Terry Forrest, of the host club, by the shortest of margins (1/10"), Terry is renowned for starting well to the back of the field giving his opponent, upon this occasion, 30" on chip timing. Third was Simon Newton also of Ackworth RR 35'47, who together with Terry and Ian Richardson carried off the team prize. The ladies winner was Jacqui Khoueiry of Wakefield Harriers 41'38", second was Christine McCarthy of Pontefract AC and third Emer Dudley of Robertstown RR. Wakefield won the team race. Age group winners were: M40 Robin Clough Penistone Footpath Runners, M50 Mark Hall Otley AC, M60 Paul Robinson Unattached, F35 Sarah Morley Skyrac AC, F45 Eileen Mannion Wakefield Harriers, F55 Janie Kitching Barnsley Harrriers. In the 5k race (actually 5.77 as the runners were misdirected!) first past the post was John Broom Unattached in 21'52", second Paul Brown Rothwell Harriers 22'39", third Andrew Mascarenhas of Ackworth 23'33", as the two leading runners were late entries Andrew carried off the first prize. The first lady was Jo Heseltine of Rothwell Harriers 27'01" second was Charley Schofield of Barnsley H. 28'48" Regards Colin

1st ACKWORTH SCOUT GROUP In 1907 Baden Powell began the Scout Movement. Its aims were to encourage young people to be fit and healthy, to become responsible ci zens able to be useful in their communi es, to become self reliant and to have fun. Its aims remain true to those ideals today, and the members of the 1st Ackworth Scout Group have certainly met those ideals this year, especially in the Cub sec on.

It's been a busy and successful year for the Cubs. How many of your 8‐11yr olds have been camping, cycling, canoeing and sailing, grass sledging, mountain boarding, caving, climbing, crate stacking and shoo ng and have had chance to take part in archery sessions, and play new sports such as Lacrosse and Newcombe ball? Well these are just some of the ac vi es undertaken by our Cubs!

Tuesday nights are when all sec ons of the group meet, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. This is when new skills are taught and games played. This year the pack was trained and tested by Paramedics in 1st Aid and Emergency Aid techniques.

August saw much of the country watching out for, 'Shoo ng Stars'. Cubs visited Swinton Observatory, studied the night sky and gained Astronomers Badges. Recently it was reported in the news people were losing the art of being able to use a map and compass, couldn't e knots and hadn't the skills to light fires. 1st Ackworth are keeping these tradi onal skills alive ‐ they used knots to build and race chariots, learned how to use a map and compass and frequently light fires and cook on them. We are fortunate that local friend of Scou ng Michael Dunstan allows us to use his woods and fields to carry out some of our ac vi es.

A Summer highlight this year was a Youth Hostel trip to the Yorkshire Dales and a weekend spent caving and hiking.

To round off a successful year twelve boys celebrated achieving the highest honour for Cubs ‐ 'The Chief Scouts Silver Award'. To have so many achieve the award at one me is fantas c, and something the group is rightly proud of.

We believe that nowhere but in Scou ng can youngsters be offered so many different and varied ac vi es at such a young age.

If you have children, boys or girls, who would like to lead a more adventurous life, encourage them to come along to Beavers 6‐8yrs, Cubs 8‐11yrs or Scouts 11‐14yrs, Tuesdays at Ackworth Howards School.

St Cuthberts & All Saints Pilgrimage

On Saturday 25th July, a group of intrepid travelers boarded a coach outside All Saints’ Church at 8:00am in the morning. This was the first hurdle. Getting there on time. The second hurdle was travelling for three and half hours northwards until we reached Holy Island, Northumbria. We were blessed by clear skies, sunshine, and a warm gentle breeze. Once there a group walked for five miles around the island, taking in large empty beaches, rocky shores, fields, sunbathing seals, and a whole host of different sea birds. Others spent time around the village sampling the delights of the tea shops, others visited places of interest, such as the castle, and the Priory where St Cuthbert was Prior, and Bishop of Lindisfarne. The day finished when we gathered together again in St Mary’s church for a service of Evening Prayer, and exchanged stories from the day, before the third hurdle, travelling home again. It was a fantastic day, and an opportunity to spend time walking the footsteps of St Cuthbert, sitting in the places he sat, and experiencing the presence of God on the island as he had done. But there was something more. We all had the opportunity to travel together, much as the Celtic Saints, like St Cuthbert had done. Travelling, and pilgrimage in particular, is a hallmark of an ancient way of life, which was practiced by the Celtic Christians of St Cuthbert’s day. It is a way of life that many Christians follow today. But I think there is something much deeper than just catching a bus to Holy Island. Everyone is on a journey. It is the journey of life, and there are many twists and turn on each journey that every individual takes. But one of the most remarkable things, is that we are all on the same journey. We may take different routes, but we are all heading the same way. Journeying together, I believe is vitally important. Because we all need support from time to time, and it is when we are journeying together, that we will find the support we need. One of the saddest things I see, is some people believing they can travel this journey alone, without help, and without the support of fellow travellers. Just as we small group travelled together to Holy Island, so the Christian Communities in Ackworth are travelling together. We may spend time on our own sometimes. But we will always find time for each other when need arises. And more importantly, we will always find time others who wish to join us on the journey, even if it only for a short time. As God journeys with us, so we journey with others, and even a short time spent with God is worthwhile. Rev. Paul revpaul.fox@gmail.com

Ackworth School Coram House Nursery and Kindergarten. Whilst other schools and nurseries in the area are closed, quiet and deserted throughout the long Summer holiday Coram House Nursery is open for business, continuing to provide high quality early years education and child care, meeting the flexible needs of busy parents. The Nursery is now open throughout the whole year, every weekday, except Bank Holidays, and only closed for just two weeks at Christmas. It is open from 7.30 am until 6 pm and parents can choose the days and sessions which best meet their individual needs. Sessions vary from 1and a 1/2 hours to 4 hours. During the day children are provided with mid morning/afternoon snacks and a hot meal at lunch time. Recently the school kitchen gained the WMDC 5 * award for Catering Hygiene. The Nursery School is housed in a beautifully renovated old building just across from the main school. The interior is bright and cheerful providing a very stimulating learning environment. It is well equipped with modern furniture and features colourful displays. It also benefits from an attractive outdoor learning environment, a hard surface play area and wooded garden, Indeed the Nursery now has access to a Forest School on the main school site which maximises the use of the natural world in every learning opportunity There are of course a great many other advantages to being a nursery school with access to all the facilities of the senior school, i.e. extremely well resourced library, large heated swimming pool, indoor sports hall, playing fields and PE staff, theatre and the drama teacher , music centre and the music teachers, a school nurse. Every opportunity is made to offer something extra to the children. The Nursery School provides places for 22 children aged 2 years to 4 + and many of them transfer seamlessly to the Junior then Senior Departments of Ackworth School, equally though some also go on to attend local state schools. The Nursery Manager Lucy Cruddas is supported by a well qualified team, which includes a useful blend of older experienced staff as well as younger newly appointed members. Lucy Cruddas herself, appointed last January, has vision for the nursery and parents cannot fail to be impressed by her knowledge and enthusiasm. She can be justly proud of the enhanced curriculum offered to the children in her care, which does include French. The school has recently allowed external clubs (Baby Ballet, Jo Jingles and Baby Massage) to use their facilities and so helps to provide these three new afternoon sessions per week for Babies to Toddlers aged 2 years.

Also keen to forge links with the Community, the Nursery School provides a free session for Mums and Toddlers at 10 30 am on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, open to any interested local parents. These sessions have already proved very popular. The school has also the use of a mini bus and when appropriate, the children are taken out on visits, which have included such varying places as the Ackworth Community Library, Farmer Copley’s to sample food and meet the animals and to Doncaster Airport. As well as taking the children out the school has recently welcomed special visitors which have included The Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Dogs for the Disabled, each providing their own learning opportunity. On Sept. 16th the Coram House Nursery School will celebrate it’s 1st Anniversary of being open all year. Then on Sat. Sept 26th The Nursery and School will be open to all interested prospective parents. Anyone wishing to find out more about all this progressive Nursery School has to offer, or to arrange to visit, should contact the Nursery Manager Lucy Cruddas on 01977 616061 lucy.cruddas@ackworthschool.com or, the Nursery Administrator 624320 jane.butterfield@ackworthschool.com
