Editor’s letter... Welcome to the September issue of The Ackworth Arrow. Now with batteries recharged, we head towards the Autumn with lots to look forward to. We have two lucky winners from last month’s St Ledger competition; Sarah Henley from Hatfield and Janine Palin from Scunthorpe. Congratulations to you both, I hope you have a fantastic day and continue with your lucky streak! I have my own race to contend with soon. I am taking part in the Great North Run on Sunday 7th September with my running partner, Dave Chorlton. I am running for Cancer Research and if you would like to support my charity, you can make a donation by texting MISI98 and the amount you would like to donate to 70070. Thank you, I will let you know if we made it next month! Don’t forget, if you have any information you would like to share in the Ackworth Arrow, please send it to me by e-mail before the deadline below. The deadline for the October issue will be Wednesday 24th September. Farewell for now, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Contact The Elderly
Contact The Elderly is National Organisation established in 1965 with now over 400 groups nationwide. The aim of the charity is to combat loneliness in our older citizens by organising tea parties on Sunday afternoons. Research has shown that Sunday afternoons can be one of the loneliest times of the week for those living alone, who find it difficult to get out and about. These Sunday afternoon friendship groups will meet once a month for afternoon tea and a chat. There is no charge. The groups are kept small 6-8 so that everyone can chat to everyone else. There is a chance to chat to new people and make new friends over a lovely afternoon tea between 3 pm and 5pm. The tea parties take place in the homes of our volunteer hosts who provide a tea, just once a year. Volunteer drivers collect the elderly guests at their own front door and drive them to the host’s home for tea where they will be warmly welcomed. Ackworth has had it’s own Contact the Elderly group for the past three years and is always keen to hear of anyone who might like to join the group. Do you like entertaining? Have you a warm and welcoming home? Would you be able to host an afternoon tea for the group just once a year? Drivers are always needed too, so if you could spare two hours one Sunday in the month to drive for us then please do get in touch. Also you might know of someone in the area who could benefit from getting out and about and joining the group Members must be over 75 and live alone. For more information check out our website www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk or call Sue SmithWilkins on -01977 615608 for further details and of how you might become involved.

The Ackworth 74 Club Celebrate 40 years The Ackworth 74 Club is a Ladies group which meets in the village on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This year is a very special year for the Club as, on October 14th, it will celebrate it’s 40th Anniversary. The Current President Moira Spears and the ladies of the Committee are planning a Special Celebration to be held, where all it’s meetings have been held since it’s formation in 1974, in the Methodist Chapel School Room, Barnsley Road, Ackworth. They are, therefore, wishing to contact any former members of the Club to extend a warm welcome to join in this Celebration. Former members are requested to contact the Secretary Pat Lawson (01977 612255 ) for more details. For the last 40 years the Club has sort to bring together ladies from all walks of life, from both within the village and the surrounding area. Some of these ladies have a busy working and family life, others are retired and still very busy supporting family, both old and young. Now, as from the very start, the Club aims to provide entertainment, stimulus and social interaction between like minded ladies. It aims to give it’s members the opportunity for some quality “time out” and the chance to make new friends. Fees are traditionally kept low so as to encourage and enable membership for anyone who may wish to join. The 74 Club has always prided itself on being a “friendly club” where everyone is welcomed and included. The atmosphere at all meetings is relaxed and non-threatening with Club procedures and rules kept to the very minimum. As part of this special year the Club is seeking to attract new members to join and ensure the Club continues to thrive within the village, so serving the ladies in our community long into the foreseeable future. So ladies of Ackworth and the surrounding area, especially all past members of the Club, you are urged to come and join us in our Special Year. Come and participate in the planned Celebration and consider, if not already a member, becoming a full and active member of the 74 CLUB!

Knock-Knock
You may not realise this but when you visit someone, whether it’s for the first time or not, you create an instant impression about their home as soon as you reach the front door. It’s an impression you create based on what you see around you. That’s why it’s important to have a beautiful, stylish and inviting door entrance rather than an unloved, unstyled and sad looking entrance. Don’t worry there are numerous things you can do to get a real wow factor and create that perfectly impressive entrance and we are here to help. Something very simple yet very stylish is to have easy to look after door planters.
Display them on either side of the door or in its vicinity. There are many types of tree or plant that are very easy to look after and that live very happily in a planter. Such as:-
Buxus Sempervirens Is one of the best topiary trees as they come in many shapes and sizes, including double, triple and quad balls, cones and spirals to mention just a few.
Buxus Latin for 'box' and believed to derive from its use to make small, finely carved boxes known in Greek as pyxos. Buxus is also Latin for flute so the name may come from its use to make flutes.
Sempervirens ‘semper’ is Latin for ‘always’ and ‘virens’ is ‘green’. This evergreen shrub is, generally, thought of as purely decorative but it was believed in years gone by that it played an important role in keeping witches from entering the house or when used as a border, from stealing plants from the garden.
The Bay Tree Can be found in many forms, such as cork screw stem, double cork screw, pyramid, 1/4, 1/2 and full standard trees. They make stunning door planters as they are ever green and a well planted example always looks super impressive. Romans considered the bay tree a symbol of glory as well as protection from thunderstorms. Nero believed bay trees purified the air and Roman victors would wipe the blood from their swords with the leaves. Thankfully today we only use the leaves for cooking!

There are many types of trees and plants that can be used as door planters or around your patio and the choice is only dwarfed by the massive choice of planters to put them in, from tall, sleek, minimalistic contemporary high cubes to the more rustic vase, urn or Kensington planter and let’s not get into the 500 colours of planter we can offer. There is a style for every one and also a price to suit everyone too, no matter what your budget. Door planters can be great fun if you go a bit "out there" and have gloss Red, Brinzaal, Gold or Orange, we don't have to stick to Black and Grays. We can add twinkle lights for that extra "Va Va Voom". Why not make a change to the usual gifts you buy friends and family? Order them a surprise delivery from Bentleys of one or two door planters? Here at Bentleys we create hundred’s of stunning planters each year and deliver them to delighted customers. We will help you choose the right tree for your space and the right planter for your style. Come on down and take a peek, you will be surprised. St Cuthberts & All Saints “The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime” The is a quote attributed to Sir Edward Grey, who was the Foreign Secretary at the Outbreak of WW1. He is said to have been looking out of his window, and saw the street lamps being lit, when he was prompted to make this statement. If you looked out of your window on the evening of 4th August this year, I wonder what you saw, and what your thoughts were at the time. Many people were watching the service at Westminster Abbey, which used the above quote as a basis for that service. Here in Ackworth, we too had a service at St Cuthbert’s Church, supported by the congregation, the community, and the British Legion. Not quite as grand as Westminster Abbey, but poignant none-the-less. 4 candles were placed at the four corners of the altar, to represent the four corners of the world. The rest of the church was in darkness. As the service progressed, these four candles were extinguished, to mirror sir Edward Grey’s comment. At the reading of the Gospel, a large white candle placed in the middle of the altar was lit. This large candle was left burning until 10:00pm, and then it too was extinguished. In the background to all of this, was the memorial to all those who lost their lives in WW1. All their names are printed on brass plaques, and they are remembered every year on Remembrance Sunday Services. Over the next four years, we will have special cause to remember them. Wars should be remembered and not glorified. As anyone who has fought in a war, they will say, there is no glory in killing. Wars should be remembered for what they have to teach us, if only we will listen. WW1 was particularly significant in this respect, because it 8:30am Communion All Saints Church changed the world forever. The world and society was 10:15am Communion St Cuthbert's Church changing anyway at this time, the revolution in Russia, 15:30pm Afternoon Worship All Saints Church the rise of mechanization, and the societal changes in Monday-Thursday England are but some example. But WW1 left a scar 9:00am Morning Prayer St Cuthbert's Church across the world for all time, more than any other war. 5:00pm Evening Prayer St Cuthbert's Church We would do well to learn the lessons from this time. Over the next four years, we should listen, and listen Wednesday 9:30am Holy Communion All Saints Church to the words of the soldiers who fought.
Sunday Services
I, that on my familiar hill Saw with uncomprehending eyes A hundred of thy sunsets spill Their fresh and sanguine sacrifice, Ere the sun swings his noonday sword Must say good-bye to all of this; By all delights that I shall miss, Help me to die, O Lord.
