As we bid farewell to a lovely summer, I hope everyone had the chance to relax and recharge, whether you enjoyed quality time with loved ones at home or explored new destinations.
The start of September signals the beginning of a new academic year, brimming with excitement and potential. Ahead lies a wealth of opportunities—school trips that spark curiosity, sporting events that inspire teamwork, and celebrations of key milestones that bring us together. It’s also a time for forging new friendships and embracing the journey that education offers.
It’s great to see 1st Ackworth Scout group thriving and making the most of the summer. However, to keep up with this growing interest, they need more adult volunteers. Could you be the one to help them continue their tradition of excellence? You don’t need any previous experience—they will provide all the training and support you need. Whether you have a love for the outdoors, a desire to mentor young people, or simply want to contribute to your community, get in touch with the Scout group for more details. See p5 for details.
The October issue deadline for adverts and content is Wednesday 18th September. The Arrow will be delivered by 1st October 2024.

Another busy term for the Scout Group as all sections continue to grow in numbers. The Summer term always sees lots of outdoor activities.
The BEAVERS enjoyed working for their Outdoor Challenge award. They undertook collecting wood to make fires and cooking marshmallows. They enjoyed songs round the campfire, learned how to tie 3 different knots, what to do if someone has an accident, and how to treat cuts and bruises. They collected natural materials and used these to make things for birds and insects. They also found out about 5 different animals, insects and birds in their locality Another badge they worked for was the Photographer badge. They learned how to use a camera, took photographs and then using these made something such as posters, scrapbooks, cards or calendars. They ended the term with a BBQ in the woods. This term saw 4 Beavers achieve the top award, the Bronze Chief Scout Challenge.
The CUBS had a diverse range of activities. They undertook the Gardening Badge. They has to discover the best seasons to grow things and had to grow 6different fruit and vegetables. They learned about different garden tools and had to use 3 of them. Then they had to grow at least one item for two months. Another evening saw them out and about in the village helping to pick up litter. Let’s hope this influences them in the future not to become litter louts themselves!
On another occasion they had a programme dealing with Respect, who to respect, why and how to respect other people’s property. They also enjoyed wide games, den building activities and practiced putting up tents for camp and the items they needed to take to camp.
The SCOUTS have also had a busy term. They undertook a cycle ride to Fitzwilliam Country park, and on another occasion undertook traditional Scout activities such as firelighting and pioneering, where they made catapults and ballista's. They went on a heritage walk round Ackworth as part of their Navigator badge. Ackworth has a rich history so it’s good that future generations learn more about its past. To end the term they joined the Cubs for an evening of games and a BBQ.
The highlight of the term was a joint camp with the Cubs at Calder Drift Scout campsite. They were fortunate to have a very hot weekend and a large water slide proved very popular. They enjoyed the challenging obstacle course, rifle shooting, grass sledging and archery, along with other activities.
Have you noticed how many Scout activities e.g. den building, cooking marshmallows on fires etc. are being copied by other organisations such as Forest Schools? Scouts haven’t just discovered what children like, they’ve been doing such things for over 100 years! No wonder Scouting continues to grow, and is the largest Youth organisation in the world. We lead, others follow!
Our group is expanding, we have no shortage of members but we do need more adult help in order to expand even more. Can you help? You don’t need previous experience we will train you.

Introducing Michael Bellamy,
New Church Leader at Ackworth Community Church
I’m Michael and I am pleased and honoured to have been appointed Church Leader at Ackworth Community Church. My wife Helen and I have been blessed by the warm, friendly and supportive folks that make up this lively church. They even seem to laugh on cue at my jokes which I’m taking to be a good sign!
Aside from leading churches, I’ve also had stints in mental health chaplaincy and teaching. I love running, country hikes with Helen and playing guitar. Helen is a youth worker and teaching assistant – and I’m sure could have been an Olympic swimmer. Ryan, our son (and keen boulderer) will be starting his second year of mathematics at Birmingham University this September.
I look forward to getting to know more of the people and places that make up Ackworth and joining the church in continuing to show God’s love in practical ways. May God bless you richly.
Michael
