Exercise injuries during lockdown Lockdown changed the landscape for how most of us work, exercise and socialise. Most of the new injuries we are seeing in clinic are due to:   

Increased training (i.e. runners doing significantly more miles) People taking on new forms of exercise. (i.e. using the opportunity to start a fitness journey, landscape the garden or try a new hobby). Working from home with a modified set up. (a kitchen table will never be a great desk long term).

Why are these causing injuries? The human body does not like swift change. We are only good at what we do… Usain Bolt switching his training volume to cycling is as likely to get injured as you or I joining the Ackworth Road Runners if we aren’t used to running. This is also evident when athletes suddenly increase their training i.e. the string of muscle injuries that followed the appointments of Marcelo Bielsa and Jurgen Klopp. Both managers suddenly changed their teams playing styles and doubled their fitness sessions… and then the muscle injuries started. And it’s the same for the rest of us… whether that’s working from home or starting a new exercise regime, we need to condition our bodies to adapt and be resilient to the new demands. That means slowly and consistently pushing yourself to achieve more but all the while allowing sufficient time to recover and so adapt. Now both Leeds United and Liverpool FC have very fit squads with low injury rates because the players are used to that level of intensity. For more information and a clear and simple understanding of this theme see our “Tendonitis explained” post on our social media channels or get in touch.

School’s out for summer! I hear the gasp of relief, home schooling has been a huge challenge for so many parents and grandparents over the last few months. Hopefully life can return to a little bit of normality and we can spend some quality time with our families over the next 6 weeks. Children can now look forward to returning to school in September and spending time with their friends and teachers.

and congratulations to those who have received their SATs. The deadline for the September issue is earlier than normal due to the holiday break Monday 10th August. The September issue will be distributed the week commencing 24th August. Keep safe everyone. This time of year, the Arrow would be full of prom photos, leaver parties, summer fayres etc., but, as you know, that’s not been possible! I sincerely hope all of our young people who have missed out on this special transition year, whether it is to Secondary School, College, 6th Form or University/workplace, have the chance to say goodbye to those they will miss, and succeed in their new environments. Good luck to everyone awaiting their exam results and

A local walk from Roche Abbey

Please take care when walking and follow the Countryside Code. People in England can exercise with up to five others from different households provided physical distancing guidelines are followed. People living alone or single parents with children under 18, can meet outdoors. Give way to other walkers. Sometimes you just have to be ready to be tested, like do I trust the map, my nose, the footpath (or any lack of it) ahead? As in life, so with walking, plan but be ready for the unexpected. Starting at the car park at Roche Abbey head away from the Gate House along a narrow footpath reaching Gypsy Lane after 250m Cross Gypsy Lane and continue on the footpath through Nor Wood ignoring all paths off, for ½ mile to reach a railway underpass. Go through and stay on the path as it continues northwards taking care at each junction of paths to “keep left” until reaching a church on the right, and a T junction ahead. Turn left Be ready for a climb, first a long staircase, then a metalised footpath, and after 300m with a wall ahead turn left to enter open farmland, then after 240m at a fingerpost turn left again now going downhill. In approximately half a mile just after passing under two sets of high-tension cables the map say turn left and head towards woods then turn right. But the footpath continues straight to reach a railway line. Turn left and after 130m reach the railway underpass. Off to the left in the distance is the path you could have taken! Go through the underpass. The route should now continue straight but the footpath disappears into undergrowth to emerge at a field edge with woods to the left. Now is not the time to be in doubt, that comes in 180m when reaching a lone bush, the path verse off right through a field of long grass, but there is no path! Moving ahead on the correct bearing struggle through the vegetation, going uphill, for ¼ mile until suddenly with some relief to the left a footpath comes into view. Head for it immediately and looking backwards see a track we should have come from. After 80m you reach Abbey Lane turn left and after 140m on your right the footpath taking you back to the start. Part of the joy of rambling is being lost in the landscape but always knowing your way home. Courtesy of Doncaster Ramblers

ACKWORTH PAIR ARE THE BEST IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND ACCORDING TO THE L.T.A. WOW! Lightning can not only strike twice, it can do it again the following year. AckPhoto from the Yorkshire awards as the worth tennis club won two awards from North of England awards have yet to be held owing to Covid 19. the L.T.A. in 2019; and double WOW!, they’ve won another pair of even more prestigious awards in 2020. The Chairman of Ackworth tennis Club: Don Saul has been recognised for years of tireless work behind the scenes, by the L.T.A. In 2019 he was named Yorkshire volunteer of the year; recently, he was informed that he was L.T.A. volunteer of the year for the North of England 2020. He has taken a club on the verge of extinction and converted it into an inclusive, diverse and dynamic organisation, thanks to his devotion of time, energy, intellect and organisational experience. However, nothing would have been achieved without the support and hard work of an excellent committee of Ackworth people: Peter Barker – secretary, Clare and Jon Rice – I.T. and welfare officer, respectively, Simon Nee – treasurer, Bernadette Gillespie – Social officer and Keith Shaw – founder and honorary vice chairman. In April 2018 membership was 17, by 2019 it was 145 (700+% increase). This year it is already over 150. No coaching to a Head coach and two assistants, with over 80 members receiving coaching each week. No competitive teams to two. An outreach programme delivered by the Head coach to over 2000 pupils in17 state primary schools. Appointing an excellent coach was essential to help save Ackworth tennis club, and take it to the next level: Alice Robson was the perfect person for the role. Alice has created a coaching programme from scratch and attracted members young and old to play and be coached. .Alice Robson was named Yorkshire coach of the year 2019 and L.T.A. coach of the year for the North of England 2020. Ensuring that the club becomes even more inclusive, Don has worked with College Lane surgery to set up a formal social prescription scheme between the NHS surgery and an LTA-recognised club, to allow suitable patients to be prescribed exercise, in the first instance, rather than medication. As a club, we support, fully, the L.T.A. aim of ‘tennis opened up’. We've always tried to be inclusive, and now, we’ve got a new all weather court available, mainly funded by Ackworth school, our partner and host; which is completely wheelchair accessible. We want to be inclusive for all of the community, including people with physical and / or mental disabilities. The Club would not exist if it wasn’t for the positive efforts of Ackworth school, our host and its always supportive Head: Anton Maree. Don and Alice both believe that "This is an exemplary story of what a small club can do – and it’s all been achieved through co-operation between partners: Club, an independent school: Ackworth school, Yorkshire tennis, the L.T.A. and The Tim Henman Foundation who have provided funding for Alice to introduce tennis into 17 local primary schools. Yorkshire Tennis provided two years of funding until the role of coach became self-financing, and it's been great with everyone working together – that’s what has made all of this possible.”

Treat The Present as a Gift You Never Know What the Future Holds On 18 September 2019, we received the most devastating news; my amazing daughter, Jess, an 8 year old little girl, who loved her family, friends and being mischievous was diagnosed with Leukaemia ALL. We couldn’t believe it - only hours earlier Jess had been playing at school. Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (cancer of the blood), also known as Leukaemia ALL, progresses quickly and aggressively, so we were instantaneously catapulted into a world that, for us, meant chemotherapy, operations, transfusions, hospital stays, intensive care and lots of medical procedures that (up until that point) we had very little knowledge of. As adults, we were frightened, knowing all too well the fragility of human life. But Jess was a fighter, her bravery and courage were part of who she was, so we were hopeful that would help her through. We were surrounded by knowledgeable professionals, promising statistics and lots of help and support. All of which reassured us we were in good hands and helped us to tackle the battle head on. Charities such as Candlelighters helped us along the way; they offer support (for both patients and families), practical advice and relief in terms of normality and fun (wherever possible) in between the medical procedures . We will forever be thankful to them, and have raised over £10,000 for them since October last year. In spite of all this, 18 October 2019 brought some tragic news. Exactly a month after diagnosis, Jess lost her battle. None of us were expecting it. Like her diagnosis, Jess’ death was sudden - only hours earlier she’d been painting pictures in the hospital playroom. At the time, no one could explain to us what had happened. Not only had we lost our beautiful, spirited, mischievous little girl, but we didn’t understand why. Now we were catapulted into another world we knew little of; a world of understanding how such a tragedy could happen. It took months for us get confirmed answers, which finally came through the coroner’s report. The doctor explained that medical advances in children’s leukaemia had come a long way, but there is still a long way to go. Unfortunately, the treatment was too much for Jess. Medically speaking, Jess had been one of the statistics we were warned about - one of the children who wouldn’t make it. Jess will never be a statistic to us. She was the loving, spirited little girl who taught us about bravery and courage and about looking for the rainbows when it rains. As Jess’ mum, I am committed that Jess’ memory will live on, that her fighting spirit keeps going (in every sense of the word!) and that something positive will come of our tragedy. I would love to see a world where no child and family ever has to experience what we did. Which is why I’m on a mission to raise as much money as we can to support children’s cancer charities. We’re documenting all of our progress on our website, www.teamjess.co.uk , which has been created in Jess’ memory. The next fundraising event is the Sheffield 10k to raise funds for Children with Cancer UK. If you would like to find out more, or want to donate, please have a look at our website or you can email me at jill@teamjess.co.uk.
