Welcome
To the December issue of
The Ackworth Arrow
With the lock down restrictions making trading virtually impossible for our small local businesses, please do all you can as I know many already do, to support them through this difficult time. Many have adapted their business the best they can to provide takeout services, delivery services and come up with gorgeous Christmas gift ideas, flowers and hampers. Almost all offer gift vouchers which can be used in 2021. Whether it’s beauty treatments, hair appointments, food hampers, gift vouchers for meals etc, there is so much we can do this Christmas to give these businesses a hand. As we await news of what restrictions we face over the festive period, I hope you are all able to see and spend time with those you love. The deadline for the January issue is Wednesday 9th December. The January issue will be distributed between Christmas & New year’s eve.
Help out our local businesses and think of them when purchasing gifts this Christmas.
Merry Christmas everybody x Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk .arrowpublications.co.uk

COMMUNITY NEWS 74 Club
During the early Spring and Summer of the first Lockdown the Club organised virtual Quizzes and Bingo sessions, via the benefits of Zoom. Allowing Members who might never have “met” to see and chat to each other. Particularly important to Members who were living alone.
“keep Calm and Carry On” During the pandemic Ackworth 74 Club, supported by some Members from the Ackworth Yorkshire Country Women’s, have tried to “Keep Calm and Carry On” doing their best to maintain contact with their Members during this difficult time. Whenever possible they have arranged actual and virtual events. With the lifting of some restrictions in September the Club, together with YCA and with thanks to the Methodist Church for their support, were able to hold a socially distanced Meeting. At which Michelle, of Michelle Flowers Pontefract gave a talk on her Fifty Challenges. The event raised £501 for Prince of Wales Hospice and thanks go to all the Members of the74 Club and Ackworth YCA who donated, contributing to the success of this event.
In October a few stalwart Members enjoyed a meal out at “Gaskell’s“ Restaurant in Wakefield which is run by the Catering students at the Wakefield College, all socially distanced and Covid secure. The November Meeting was a virtual talk by Lyn Palmer, local resident and registered Hypnotherapist. Lyn’s talk covering aspects of anxiety and depression was particularly relevant at this difficult time.

The Challenges Continue Over the last few months, many people seeing me walking around the village have asked “How are the challenges going?” My answer is always the same “Oh! You Know! It’s been difficult with lockdown!” How true that has been. Many of the challenges I was set for my 60th birthday have had to be put on hold because of lockdown and social distancing, simply because they involved socialising. However, I have managed to continue, or complete some of them. I have continued to write short stories for children, and have written some nonsense poems to go alongside them. I also continue to sketch portraits, but that is proving slower than imagined. I have written to a long list of celebrities who share the same birth year as me, asking them to write back, so that with each response there is a donation to charity. So far I have had two replies, from Michel Roux Junior, the famous chef from Le Gavroche in London, and Kim Wilde! I have been unable to go skydiving, but I did complete some indoor skydiving training, which was fantastic. A few weeks ago we travelled to Northumbria, and Alnmouth. And there I was able to complete the challenge of swimming for 60 seconds in the North Sea. The temperature of the water was 10.3C! So quite cold. Once submerged in the water, it didn’t feel too bad, but my hands were freezing! I now understand why some people become addicted to cold water swimming, which does have some health benefits, and helps with stress and anxiety if done frequently. Getting out was the best bit! With the help of our church friends we have been able to collect over 60 shoeboxes this year. This year we are supporting Teams 4 U. These have been delivered to the warehouse in Meltham. I have taken on a new challenge. That of walking the Camino de Santiago virtually. Using an app on my phone which monitors my exercise and how far I walk, showing my progress along the way. So far I have completed 256 miles of 480. The aim is to complete the distance by 31st December this year. So I have been able to continue some of the challenges, and will continue to pursue others into next year, when hopefully the restrictions ease. Many thanks to everyone who has donated so far, the total currently stands at around £2700.

Happy Halloween from Ackworth Tennis Club!
What a Hair-raising Halloween Competition that took place on Saturday 10th October. The 6-9 year old children did a great job at dressing up for their spooky competition. We saw skeletons compete against werewolves and for some it was their first ever competition! Congratulations to Seren Wood for winning the Mini Red box A, Ned Jackson for winning box B and Hector Jones for winning the mini orange competition. It was a team event for the 10 years and older age group; playing singles and doubles matches. There were 7 pairs competing in two boxes. There was an extra Halloween twist where each player was given either a trick or treat card. For example ’Serve standing on 1 leg’. They had to use this card once in their match. Well done to the winners of box A George and Oliver and the winners of box B Elenor and Libby.
Ackworth Senior Citizens Christmas Tea Volunteers from our village have historically fundraised and organised an annual Ackworth Senior Citizens’ Christmas Tea in early December, which is hosted at Ackworth School. Unfortunately, due to coronavirus, this event is unable to take place in December 2020. As an alternative, Ackworth Parish Council, This is Ackworth (TiA) and Ackworth School are looking to treat our senior citizens to a small Christmas luxury in lieu of the Christmas Tea. If you are an Ackworth senior citizen who would normally have attended this event and would like to receive a small Christmas treat as an alternative this Christmas, please e-mail Sue Hollyhead at susanandterry6@talktalk.net or Pip Langfield at pip.langfield@ackworthschool.com by Friday 20th November 2020 with your name, address and contact telephone number. We hope that this alternative, will bring a smile to our senior citizens this Christmas.
