Community Interviewers sought to shape research project across Wakefield district Wakefield and District Health and Community Support (WDHCS) is seeking community champions to help shape its #WhatsUpWakefield research project, looking at health inequalities across the Wakefield district. The Wakefield-based independent grant making Community volunteers taking part in a training charity, along with national research agency workshop with Rocket Science. Rocket Science, is recruiting Community Interviewers who will be trained and employed to talk to people in their local community about health and wellbeing issues and challenges that matter to them, and how charities and community groups can help meet these needs in future. To take part applicants need to be:

 

Aged 16+ and living within the Wakefield district

Be active within your local community (through leadership, volunteering etc.) Be able to commit to around 4 hours per week until the end of February. Training and support is provided and the successful applicants will be paid the Living Wage plus expenses, or the equivalent in vouchers. WDHCS commissioned Rocket Science to work with the public and the voluntary sector to further understand the strengths and challenges that communities face as they emerge from the pandemic. This new research has already identified that Wakefield district has about half the number of charities per person than the national average and that it also has some of the lowest grant funding per person in the country. The research will be used to inform how WDHCS use grant funding in the future. Kath Lindley, Chief Executive of WDHCS said: “WDHCS is proud to be local and we are passionate about providing the right support to local communities that need it most. We can only do this though through carefully listening to the needs of the people in those communities and, as we come out of the COVID pandemic, this is more important than ever before. “If you have something to say about the health and wellbeing needs of you or your community, we would love to hear from you, so please get involved.” Anna Hartley, Director of Public Health at Wakefield Council, said: “This feels like Wakefield District’s time both to highlight the challenges we face and to celebrate the strength of local communities who have done so much during COVID. “This research will provide a great opportunity to work together and bring in more funding to support people who experience the biggest barriers to good health.” For an informal discussion call James Ward on 07508 918075 and to apply fill in this survey: https://bit.ly/3r0xFw9

The Ackworth 74 Club Dine out at The Kings Croft Hotel! Every January the Ladies of the Ackworth 74 Club enjoy a special night, dining out together at a local venue of choice. This year, once again, the Club chose to have their New Year Celebratory Meal at the Kings Croft Restaurant Pontefract. The evening began with a Welcome Drink of Prosecco before the 43 ladies, Members of the Club, went on to enjoy a delicious 3 course choice menu, beautifully presented and served. The meal then concluded with coffee and mints. There was also a Grand Raffle and a 2021 News Quiz of the Year which was won by Table 5. All in all, the Members agreed it had been a very enjoyable and successful event and a great start to the Club’s Programme for the year 2022. Members please note, the next Meeting of the 74 Club will be on Tuesday February 8th 7.30 pm at the Methodist Church Schoolroom when the Speaker will be Veronica Bird who will give a talk entitled from Prison to Palace. Veronica, a retired Prison Officer, was honoured with an OBE from the H M the Queen for her work as a prison reformer.
