Welcome

to the July issue of the

Radiators, Leaks, Blockages, Outside Taps, General Plumbing

Ackworth Arrow What an amazing June we had, so many lovely events held all over the country to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It was great to see all the bunting decorating our streets, homes and shops. A huge well done to everyone involved in the Jubilee celebrations. Congratulations to all students who have now finished their Sats, GCSE’s, A’ Levels and BTEC qualifications, I wish you all the best of luck with your results and a relaxing summer. The August issue deadline is earlier than usual this month due to the holiday period, please send your adverts and articles no later than Wednesday 13th July. The arrow will be delivered before 1st August.

Best Wishes

Ackworth 74 Club June Event A Summer Walk followed by a Buffet Supper at The Masons’ Arms. On a beautiful June evening, instead of their usual monthly meeting at the Methodist Schoolroom, Members of the Ackworth 74 Club were to be found gathering on the Bell Lane Car Park, ready for their annual Summer walk. Prior to setting off along the Dando Way the 25 walkers paused for a photo. This year the weather was just right, a warm, balmy evening, perfect for a stroll in the countryside. There was much laughter and chatter as Members enjoyed the opportunity to be out and about, and catching up with news. Leaving the Dando Way they turned right on to Hardaker Lane to follow paths and track down towards the little River Went, along it’s banks and back into the village. Then the walkers continued on to the Masons’ Arms on Bell Lane, where another 13 of the, slightly less energetic, Club Members waited to greet them in the newly refurbished Lounge Bar. Then all the 38 Club Members present, enjoyed a delicious complimentary buffet paid for by Club funds, provided and served by the Masons’ Arms, current, in-house, catering team, The Yorkshire Smoggie. The rest of the evening was very pleasantly and convivially spent doing a quiz. Committee Member, Sue Sidwell won the raffle and everyone agreed it had been a very successful, enjoyable social evening. The next event of the Ackworth 74 Club is their Annual Outing in July, this year to the Piece Hall in Halifax and then on to Shibden Hall. The Club will next meet at the Methodist Church Schoolroom on the 2nd Tuesday in September. For further information about the 74 Club call Sue on 01977 615608

1ST ACKWORTH SCOUT GROUP SCOUTINGS HIGHEST HONOUR 1st Ackworth Scout Groups longest serving leader, Tom Peacock, has just been awarded the Scout Associations highest honour, ‘The Silver Wolf’. The Silver Wolf Award is the unrestricted gift given by the Chief Scout (Bear Grylls) to people who have given the most outstanding service over many years, and upheld as an accolade that reaches the highest level of scouting. The award consists of a silver wolf suspended from a dark green and yellow neck ribbon, a cloth badge to be worn on the uniform shirt, and a framed certificate signed by Bear Grylls, the Chief Scout. The award was made by the County Commissioner of Central Yorkshire Scouts at the Quaker School, which is where the group meets, with all sections - Beavers, Cubs and Scouts present. The Commissioner praised Toms length of service given to scouting over 50+ years - in the Pontefract and Castleford District. He is the first person in the group to receive this award. He was given a rousing scouting ‘BRAVO’ after the presentation of the award, before everyone enjoyed refreshments in the sunshine. Toms involvement in Scouts began as a boy, then he became a leader with groups 5th Pontefract, 1st Pontefract and later Ackworth. During this time he has seen a multitude of changes and advancements, but most important has been the continued growth of the movement and its adaptability to continue to inspire and challenge children, giving them adventurous and demanding activities that fit them for life. When considering people for the award other aspects of service to the community are often taken in consideration. As well as his role in scouting Tom has been a voluntary Peak Park Warden, worked with the Probation Service in setting up an Outdoor Centre in Semerwater in the Yorkshire Dales, was a selector for ‘Operation Raleigh’, (now called Raleigh International), has worked as a volunteer at St.George’s Crypt, a centre for Down and Outs in Leeds, was involved in Riding for the Disabled, has been Chair of Trustees at Ackworth Community Library, is a trustee of the Elizabeth Love museum in Pontefract, and has worked as a volunteer fundraiser for the Prince of Wales Hospice in Pontefract for over 20 years. He has also been awarded the ‘Mayor says thanks’ award for his contribution to scouting in particular. A big Well Done Tom!
