Welcome to the March issue of

Ackworth Arrow

Spring is in the air!! Oh how I love those words… It’s great to see our communities working together for the benefit of their village. We have another opportunity for everyone to meet up as we celebrate Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee in the Summer, everyone is encouraged to hold a street part over the weekend, the celebrations start on Thursday 2nd June until Sunday 5th June. Feel free to share your plans and ideas in the Arrow.

March is the month of celebrating that special person who plays a huge part in our lives. Whether it is your Mum, Aunt, Mother in law, Grand parent, past or present, we raise our glass and thank you all for your guidance, support and strength. Happy Mothers Day. The April issue deadline is Wednesday 16th March. The magazines will be delivered the last full weekend in March. Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

Introducing the Anne Robson Helpline. If you or someone close to you is dying, you can talk to us. At the Anne Robson Trust we aim to be there to listen to anyone who is struggling with the imminent death of someone they care about. We know that facing the end of life can leave you isolated and alone. Calls are free and confidential – Call us on 0808 801 0688 Being able to access support whilst a loved one is dying is really important for a number of reasons. Gaining knowledge of what may happen towards the end and having a sense of ‘preparedness’ helps both the person dying and their family gain as much control as possible. Please visit www.annerobsontrust.org.uk/helpline-service to find out more.

Ackworth 74 Club February Meeting. At their February Meeting the 74 Club welcomed a distinguished speaker, Veronica Bird OBE. Veronica’s talk entitled” From Prison to Palace” was interesting, informative and at times amusing. Veronica spoke about her fascinating life, first as a Prison Officer, later as Prison Governor, serving at Wakefield and Armley Prisons and meeting such notorious prisoners as Myra Hindley and Charles Bronson. Finally, it was her work as a Prison Reformer which gained her the OBE received from the Queen. Veronica, one of nine children born to a Barnsley miner in the late 30’s was no stranger to Ackworth having won a scholarship to Ackworth School, though she was later removed by her family who needed her to help at home. Veronica joined the Police Service at 21 before transferring to the Prison Service where she was to spend the next 35 years. Members thoroughly enjoyed hearing Veronica speak and many bought her book. Veronica donates all the proceeds from her book sales and fees for her talks to charity.
