Welcome to the May issue of the Ackworth Arrow April has been such a wonderful month. Seeing people outside enjoying time spent with friends and family, hearing chatter and laughter in gardens, all made possible with the lovely sunshine we have had has been so uplifting. We are nearly there! Local community groups are slowly taking first steps back to normal business and local hospitality is beginning to open back up. These steps are vital for the well being of us all and I hope everyone enjoys getting back to socialising and a bit of a normal life. If you have any group or community events you want to share, please let me know and I will publish in the next Arrow. I hope you all have a wonderful safe May, meeting friends and family once again and that we all rally round our local businesses and support them wherever we can. The deadline for the June issue is Wednesday 19th May. The June issue will be distributed the last weekend in May.

Daffodils along The Dando! Ackworth residents who regularly enjoy walking along that great village asset “The Dando Way” cannot have failed to notice the lovely display of daffodils in the fenced wooded areas along-side the path. These daffodils are the direct result of the hard work, energy and effort of some enthusiastic, dedicated Ackworth ladies, in particular Sue Sidwell and Sue Price. Earlier in the year the two Sues decided to devote some of their spare time during Lockdown to helping make their local area a more colourful and attractive place. So, these enterprising ladies set about the task of improving the wooded areas so bringing the colour and brightness of Springtime to one particular area of Ackworth. Whist they were digging and planting the daffodils, many local residents paused on their walks to express interest and praise the project, some even offered support and gifts of bulbs. Encouraged by the response to their efforts, Sue and Sue have decided to continue with their plans and are now planting Bluebells. Later on, with financial help from a village organisation, they hope to continue planting another wooded area and then around the trees further along the Dando Way. The Council are especially keen that the areas along the Dando Way become a haven for wild life, encouraging butterflies and bees. As more people become aware of this very worthwhile project to enhance the whole length of this very popular village footpath it is hoped to encourage other local residents to get involved, either by donating bulbs or to help with planting. These wooded areas, now tidied and planted with daffodils and bluebells that will hopefully flower each Spring, so providing much pleasure for Ackworth residents in the years to come. If you would like to support and help with this project, please call Sue on 615608

The Ackworth 74 Club Kept Calm and Carried On. During the recent Covid 19 pandemic the Ackworth 74 Club has Kept Calm and Carried On. holding mostly virtual Meetings, in one form or another, throughout this difficult time. Their most recent event held in April will hopefully be the last event to be conducted via Zoom Link. Members enjoyed a talk on the History of Hats and Headgear by Claire Spooner. Claire is a professional freelance milliner based in North Yorkshire. She offers a theatrical millinery design and making service in period & contemporary headwear. Claire enjoys sharing her passion for hats through regular group talks & demos and workshops for venues Across the UK. Next month Members are looking forward to meeting, once again, Face to Face although socially distanced and in the open air, to be as Covid secure as possible. This will be a walk around the footpaths of Ackworth, with supper to follow in the Mason’s Arms garden, everyone in groups of six! If you would like more information about the 74 Club or details of how to join, contact Sue on 615608
