Oh October! How did that happen?
I really don’t want to tempt fate, and I am sure you will all agree, it has been so nice and reassuring to see all children back at school. Congratulations to all the teaching and support staff who have made this happen, I can’t imagine the challenges that have been met to ensure everyone is safe and continue to be so. As we edge closer to more restrictions to help curb the spread of Covid 19, we must do all we can to keep our schools open. All I can do to help is follow the Government guidelines the
best I can, as frustrating as some may be. This month’s Arrow has a little more information on the new rule of 6 which is direct from the Government website, which makes clear what groups are exempt. Some local groups, who are following Government guidelines are meeting up again and some are giving it a bit more time, please make sure you contact your group before making plans to attend as you may find they are still closed. The deadline for the November issue is Wednesday 14th October. The November issue will be distributed the weekend commencing 25th October. Keep safe everyone. Michelle Sidebottom

COMMUNITY NEWS SOME MEMORIES OF A COMMUNITY COMING TOGETHER IN LOCK-DOWN Scarecrow Festival Local resident Karen Campbell decided to organise a Scarecrow Festival in Ackworth & was amazed at the response & the effort so many residents made. She decided to maybe try and raise some money for a local charity / cause and the obvious choice was for Oliver. The target was £500 but to date it has raised £2,323.00 – an amazing achievement ! By the end of the Festival there was 260 entrants & judging was carried out by Daryl Powel ( Castleford Tigers Coach) and his wife Janice. They both felt honoured to be asked to judge and could not believe the efforts residents had made. A big thank to Carole March who helped & supported the project by donating trophies and medals and to Ian Moore who managed to plot every Scarecrow using Google maps making it easier for people to find. Also to Claire Bell who provided expert knowledge having experience in helping at a Scarecrow Festival in Methley. Karen is hoping to plan a new Festival in 2021making this an annual tradition raising money for another local charity. There was The Gruffalo Trail & The Caterpillar Trail for local children to follow. COVID COBRA on Dando Way Karen Bennett is a registered childminder in Ackworth who has run a group called Ackworth Rocks for over 2 years. ( We did an article about the group some time last year in the Arrow ). When the Covid virus came along she was concerned about passing the virus around hiding the rocks but was told about a snake on the internet. She decided to create our own snake in Ackworth situated on Dando Way near to Bell Lane Carr Park. Both children and adults of Ackworth decorated pebbles and added to the snake, many people just went to watch it grow! Well over 500 pebbles make up the snake.
4
It helped to give something positive for families to focus on during a very bleak time & made a lot of people smile instead of feeling sad. He grew so big Karen decided to email our Parish Council to see if he could be cemented in so we would have a positive lasting memory of a village coming together over lockdown. Karen did a poll on Facebook to vote for a name for him and he was then christened “Covid Cobra”. WMDC did a fantastic job turning our snake into a beautiful piece of historic artwork that will forever hold our covid story. Karen then wrote a little verse that explains the snake and had the plaque made by a local business “Inscribery” which Ackworth Parish Council kindly paid for. There were Street Parties, being entertained by the fantastic Joe O’Brien (adhering to social distancing ) raising money for Oliver, street Bingo, neighbours chatting over fencing . COMMUNITY FAIRY GARDEN Situated on Dando Way facebook page Ackworth Community Fairy Garden Local resident Jo-Anne Williams came up with the idea to create a home for fairies were the children could visit and make a wish. Lots of fun and laughter were seen there in some dark times – Do you believe in fairies ? Ackworth Covid-19 Response A wonderful group of volunteers was set up to help with households shopping, collection of prescriptions or just providing someone to talk to. They were just a phone call away and offered fantastic support through some very dark times.

Don’t forget the Fantastic - Oliver’s Great Garden Show again supporting funds for Oliver showing some wonderful gardens within the village. The biggest HIP HIP HURRAY has to go to local resident JOE O’BRIEN he became a one man raising money for Oliver machine! Joe ran “10 miles a day for 10 days “( assisted by his good friend Graham Phipps on his bike ), he sang and entertained at street parties and venues up and down the village for free and he also did sponsored press-ups . With all his efforts Joe raised £9160 and Julie & Dean of The Angel pub gave a further £840 to make it to the AMAZING total of £10,000. UPDATE TO OLIVERS STORY Oliver Stephenson lives in Ackworth with his Dad, Mum and brother Alfie. On the 16th January Oliver was diagnosed as having Neuroblastoma a childhood cancer. Oliver began chemotherapy on Saturday 18th January at LGI were he is receiving around the clock care. A Just Giving page was set up to try and raise funds to send Oliver to New York for the Bivalent vaccine treatment once he completed his treatment on the NHS and his scans come back clear. Oliver’s original Just Giving page has raised a staggering £269,435.63. £210,000 of this has been paid on to the new fundraising page with Solving Kids Cancer, £20,000 is for the families living and travel expenses whilst in New York , £9411.65 covered fees and £30,023.98 is held within a bank account to go to other families in the same position. ACKWORTH COMMUNITY FOOD SHARE This project came off the back of the Ackworth Covid 19 Response and is co-ordinated by a wonderful lady called Ann-Marie. Covid 19 and The New Rule of 6 When can I gather in groups of more than 6?
If you live in a household with more than 6 people, you can continue to gather in and attend all settings together. This same applies for your support bubbles. All venues should continue to accommodate groups larger than 6 who live together or are in the same support bubble to gather in and use their services and venues. There are exceptions where groups can be larger than 6 people, including:
for work, or the provision of voluntary or charitable services registered childcare, education or training supervised activities provided for children, including wraparound care, youth groups and activities, and children’s playgroups
providing support to a vulnerable person providing emergency assistance, and to avoid injury or illness or to escape risk of harm for arrangements where children do not live in the same household as both their parents fulfilling a legal obligation such as attending court or jury service weddings and civil partnership ceremonies and receptions – up to 30 people, in a public place funerals – up to 30 people. This does not include wakes, other than for religious ceremonial pur-
poses.
other religious and belief-based life cycle ceremonies – up to 30 people, in a public place. This only covers the ceremonies, and does not include celebrations of these events.
organised sport or exercises classes or licensed outdoor physical activity. This does not include informal sport or fitness activity with family or friends – this must be limited to a group of 6.
elite sporting competition and training support groups – formally organised groups to provide mutual aid, therapy or any other form of
support. This includes support to victims of crime, recovering addicts, new parents, people with long-term illnesses, those facing issues relating to their sexuality or gender, and those who have suffered bereavement.
protests – if organised in compliance with COVID-19 Secure guidance Where a group includes someone covered by one of these exemptions, they are not counted as part of the gatherings limit. This means, for example, that a tradesperson can go into a household of six without breaching the limit if they are there for work.
