HOW CAN WE HELP?

_____________________ Life is slowly moving towards a new normal. The wearing of masks has created a whole new stress before we leave home!

Keys check Purse/wallet check Mask??? Where’s my mask?

I’m sure you will agree, it’s a small price to pay to help work, life and play continue. It’s good to see community centres, gyms, libraries and other leisure facilities, opening again. Lets hope and pray that science produces a vaccine very soon and schools open as planned in September. The ‘Eat out to Help out’ scheme in August has proved a successful initiative to many local pubs and restaurants. I hope it has introduced new customers for the future of these establishments. Huge congratulations to Ackworth Tennis Club who have made Lawn Tennis Association history by having two members of the same club win national awards. See p8 and 9. The deadline for the October issue is Wednesday 16th September. The October issue will be distributed the weekend commencing 25th September. Keep safe everyone. This Photo is Don and Alice at the Yorkshire awards as the National awards have yet to be presented, in person, owing to Covid 19

Unique triple double at L.T.A. awards for Ackworth tennis club ACKWORTH Tennis Club has achieved something unique in the history of the Lawn Tennis Association’s national awards: Two awards to the same club in the same year. Alice Robson (Development coach of the year) and Don Saul (The Cathie Sabin award: Volunteer of the year) earned a unique triple, double of awards: Yorkshire, North of England and National over recent months. Two of 18 national winners from across the country, Alice Robson secured the accolade for ‘Development Coach of the Year’ while Don Saul earned the ‘Cathie Sabin Award’ for Volunteer of the Year. This year, more than any other, communities have been reminded just how vital volunteers are not just within sport, but to society across the country.

8

Within tennis, volunteers have shown an incredible effort in re-opening clubs, supporting their members and their wider communities, often being a lifeline to others facing personal hardship. There are more than 25,000 volunteers in tennis but few can match the impact Don has had, taking Ackworth from the verge of extinction to being a highly successful, inclusive, diverse and dynamic organisation increasing membership by over 1100 per cent. Don has donated countless hours and worked with myriad of partners to breathe new life into his club, including the setting up a ‘prescription for tennis link’ with the local NHS surgery, and working with Ackworth School, Yorkshire Tennis and the Tim Henman Foundation to pool funding to bring in a young head coach.

In a virtual ceremony held on Thursday, Don was presented with his award – named in honour of Cathie Sabin, a true champion of volunteers – by David Rawlinson, LTA president. Don, Chairman of Ackworth Tennis Club, said: “All we had to do at Ackworth Tennis Club was choose and co-operate with partners, agree aims and obtain the funding. Choose a coach for youthful enthusiasm, enormous potential, a marvellous work ethic, and a capacity to make everyone enjoy their tennis, allow her the autonomy to set up and run programmes, and trust her to do her job. Have a chairman and committee determined to facilitate her needs and ambitions. Then, wait for the results. If only it was as easy as this sounds. Alice transformed the club within months, and just look at us now: a diverse, inclusive, vibrant club with a future to match.” Don’s Ackworth colleague Alice, meanwhile, was recognised for her exceptional contribution to grassroots and development tennis. Growing a coaching programme from zero to 80, Alice has made a massive influence of the growth of membership at the club from 17 to 200 members. She has a passion for getting women and girls on-court and has developed innovative sessions including a Mother and Daughter’s tennis festival. Within her time at Ackworth she has mentored new coaches and engaged more than 2000 children from 17 local schools by giving free six-week introduction to tennis courses. The development coach was presented her award in the virtual ceremony by none other than Judy Murray OBE, former Fed Cup captain. Alice said: “Tennis has always been a massive part of my life, being involved has given me so much joy. My motivation to coach and run a programme is to see the impact that tennis has on other people’s lives. “To be recognised for something I am so passionate about is incredible, with the added bonus to have won the award above coaches who have done astonishing work.

“I am so proud of Ackworth Tennis Club and I am very excited to see what the future brings. We have built a fantastic tennis community which I am sure will continue.” Currently in their fifth year, the LTA Tennis Awards celebrate the achievements made by outstanding tennis volunteers, coaches, officials, venues and players in Britain. Streamed live on LTA channels and presented by Leon Smith OBE, the national ceremony – which was digital for the first time in the awards’ history – saw the likes of current British No.1s Dan Evans and Johanna Konta pick up the LTA’s Men’s and Women’s ‘Player of the Year’ awards respectively, alongside 16 other deserving national winners. This year saw more than 2,000 nominations across grassroots categories including Young Person of the Year and Club of the Year. Nominations were drawn from more than 25,000 volunteers, 4,400 coaches, 940 officials, 20,000 schools, 2,700 clubs and more than 9,700 LTA approved tournaments, demonstrating the extraordinary contributions of individuals and venues who help to open up the sport and bring new fans and players to the game. “The LTA Tennis Awards are a real celebration of the people that make our sport thrive,” said LTA president, David Rawlinson. “They celebrate the achievements made by outstanding volunteers, coaches, officials, venues and players, who are all vital in helping us to grow the game. “To be named a national winner out of over 2,000 public nominations is a fantastic achievement so I’d like to congratulate all of this year’s winners and extend my thanks to each and every one of them for all that they do to help tennis in Britain.” Inspired by Don and Alice’s stories?
