Hayfield proms went off with a bang, the ladies looked fabulous—so did the gentlemen! Local business woman, Carolyn Poole who owns Chique in Armthorpe, dressed many of the ladies, there is an article from Chique in this months Arrow with many of the fabulous dresses on show. With all this warm weather, please remember to keep your property secure, make sure your windows and doors are locked when you leave your home. There have been a number of local burglaries so speak to your neighbours and make sure you are all vigilant, especially if someone is on holiday. Always report anything suspicious to the police. Finally, good luck to all students who are leaving school to start a new life in work, college, 6th form or university. I hope you‘re dreams are realised. The September issue deadline will be Wednesday 25th August, if anyone would like to submit an article or an advert, please send it to me by this date. Any items that I receive after this date will miss the September issue. Due to the holiday period, the September issue will be distributed later than usual in the first week of September.

News, News, News, News, News, News... Kilham Hall Thank you to everybody who came and had a ‗cuppa‘ and a cake in the Hall on Saturday the 18th June at the recent Branton Fun Day event. Kilham Committee ladies worked extremely hard at the event and the magnificent sum of £250 (over and above the girls amount of £1632) was raised and cheques presented to Emma, Rachel and Lyndsey for their two charities. What a success the day was and here‘s to the next one next year maybe? Work is in progress organising our next event which will hopefully be a ‗Halloween‘ party for our younger members of the community possibly to be held on Sunday the 30th October when our clocks will have been altered for winter! Any help or ideas you may have please contact a member of the Committee. The Tuesday morning Coffee Club has its last get together on the 12th July. We will reopen again on the 6th September and we look forward to seeing you then. Have a great summer. Kilham Hall Management Committee

Beware!! Children’s Cancer Charity Telephone Call Scam! I have today been contacted by a person claiming to be putting together a calendar to raise funds for a children‘s cancer charity. I have been contacted by this company before and found out that it was a scam. The telephone number they called from is 01695 576275 and the person spoke with a Liverpool accent. I have contacted the police who have confirmed that these people are not from a charity and it is indeed a scam. They usually ask if you would like to advertise on the Calendar and usually aim at businesses. Please do not pay them any money.

A Super Strawberry Tea & Songs of praise At Auckley Parish Centre This annual event on 3 July was a delightful blend of celebration praise, friendship and pleasure and more than lived up to the successes of past years. Our choices for hymns had been gathered in recent weeks and Neil did a great job in putting together a lovely selection, managing not to include anything that we had sung last year, keeping the feeling fresh and joyous. He gave us a brief insight to each one, speaking about the writers and the origins, giving us time to get our breath back before starting on the next. One ‗mystery‘ hymn had been selected which did not appear to be known by anyone in the room! (Even Janet did not know it and had to have a practice on the organ the week before to make sure it went with a swing.) However we soon fell into the rhythm of it and it went well. There was some great, stirring singing, with powerful mature tenor and bass voices and delightful squeaks from the two babies present, truly ‗songs of praise‘. A most delicious feast of a tea followed, with savouries, sweets and of course strawberries and cream. Ann and her team had prepared and worked very hard to keep up the well known tradition of a ‗proper tea‘ on this annual Sunday treat. During this time the raffle, tombola and bottle stalls started to do business and a very difficult quiz sheet was attempted by teams on each table. Luckily I was busy selling raffle tickets at this time so did not have to show my ignorance at only knowing two of the answers. It was lovely to see so many happy smiling faces, to welcome old friends, new friends, those who were there for the first time and hopefully will become regulars. This was a truly joyful occasion. A big thank you to everyone who helped, both with the preparation, donations for the stalls, and on the day. Thank you Janet for playing the music. Special thanks to Ann for organising our annual treat. £638 was raised for Auckley Parish Church Funds. Thanks to all who came on the day. We hope you enjoyed it and that we will see you again next year. Unclaimed raffle prize – pink ticket no 564 – telephone 771525 to claim.

Auckley Parish Council Newsletter August/September 2011 New Play Equipment - A local architect will shortly submit a planning application to DMBC Planning Dept. on the Parish Council‘s behalf, in respect of an extensive range of play equipment at Riverside Park.

Proposed Replacement Bus Shelter - Currently solicitors acting for the Parish Council and the land owner are dealing with this matter and hopefully we will shortly see some progress, in order that building work can commence as soon as the transfer of land has been completed.

Irresponsible Car Parking Outside Shops at Ellers Lane, Auckley - Some motorists have recently been seen parking their cars on the wide frontage pavement in front of the Pharmacy and the Chinese Takeaway in order to visit the shops, following which they then reverse back onto the car park. This is a dangerous manoeuvre which puts children at risk, because pupils from the schools at Auckley and Hayfield use the shops and do not expect vehicles to be parked in that area. The Parish Council has contacted South Yorkshire Police, and DMBC Traffic Enforcement Officers have been asked to curb the practice. Council is discussing with DMBC Highways the possibility of bollards being provided at this location.

Anti-Social Activities - The Police and Community Safety Wardens have been asked to monitor the wooded copse off Eastfield Lane where young people have been engaged in lighting fires and other anti-social activities. The Parish Council wishes to thank local residents who alerted the Authorities to the fire and assisted with clearing up the debris.

News From Branton St Wilfrid‟s Primary School Technology Challenge Success! On Friday 1st July, ten Year 6 children represented our school in the Technology Challenge Final at Hayfield Secondary School, where they competed against groups from other local schools. This competition allows the children to design and make a product with a “real” purpose as each year we are partnered with a different business/ company. This year we were partnered with Sita Recycling, and we were set the challenge of designing and making a model of a new recycling box for Doncaster households. The challenge posed us with many difficulties, but the children worked exceptionally hard in their groups and made some fantastic models! They also had to design a range of marketing materials to promote their product, and at the final they gave a wonderful presentation to the judges to encourage them to appreciate all the design features of their models. The children all thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, and at the final event represented our school with enthusiasm. Very Well Done to all the finalists and a special Well Done to our “Green Phoenix” team who actually won the event!

Year 3 Visit to Potteric Carr On Tuesday 5th July, Year 3 went on their class visit to Potteric Carr Nature Reserve to link to their topic on “Perfect Plants”. They completed a range of workshops throughout the day and also had an opportunity to observe the many plants, birds and minibeasts that can be found at the reserve. A highlight of the day for many of the children was a “Minibeast Hunting” session where they worked in small groups to catch and then observe minibeasts using hand magnifiers. They were delighted to find caterpillars, grasshoppers and a range of different beetles. Once they had found their minibeast they then looked for different natural materials to make a small sculpture piece to depict the creature. Later in the day they visited a bird hide to observe different birds in their natural habitat, and played a game to explore cross pollination in plants. It was a funfilled day that every-one thoroughly enjoyed!

Class 5’s Olympic Celebration Event

On Wednesday 29th June Class 5 went to the Dome for a 2012 Olympic celebration event. Each school got chosen to represent a country; Class 5 was chosen to be team China! We all got given a different job for the opening ceremony and we practised our parts at school. Some of the parts were streamers dancers, some people made lanterns and carried them, some people wore Chinese costumes, some played the part of the dragon and two people carried the banner. When the opening ceremony had finished each country went to do activities, we did multi-skills, after that we went to a drama class. After lunch we went to play cricket and our last activity was dance. All of Class 5 enjoyed the event. By Ellie, Anya and Alexia Sporting Success! South Yorkshire County Finals Our Year 6 mixed Rounders team won the Hayfield pyramid Rounders tournament. We went on to play in the Doncaster Finals, held at McAuley Catholic High School. We played 4 games and won all of them. It was very exciting as we were now through to the South Yorkshire County Finals. This took place at Wath Comprehensive on Tuesday 28th June. After some tough games of rounders, our school came 8th within South Yorkshire! Class 5’s Visit to Austerfield On Friday 9th July, Class 5 went to Austerfield to learn about the water cycle. We learned a lot about rivers, we looked at a gorge, a valley, a waterfall, a flood plain and a delta. After that we made our own river. First the girls had a go at doing it, and then the boys finished off with a better effort! For the experiment we had a dog biscuit each, 3 stopwatches and some measuring tape. We had to see which bit of the river flowed fastest by throwing the dog biscuits in to the river, the middle or near the bank. It was a great school trip and I would want to go again. Our favourite part was making the river. By Alex Bailey and Joey Acris

Teddy Bear’s Picnic at Branton St Wilfrids

On a warm, sunny July afternoon, 90 teddies (and their owners) enjoyed a picnic in our school grounds! We played circle games including “The Farmer‟s in his Den,” “There was a Princess Long Ago” and “In and out the Dusty Bluebells,” before settling down to our picnic which included lots of sticky buns! The picnic was part of our charity work, as it was Action Research – Bring your Bear to school day and we raised £175 for this worthwhile charity.

News from Auckley Junior, Infant & Nursery School

Visit to Hatfield Water Park Auckley School‟s Year 6 have recently taken a trip to Hatfield Water Park. It seems as though it has been an extremely enjoyable time and well worth the money as many children have said it was a once in a life time opportunity. Read on to find out more about the amazing residential. Many of the children were impressed by the high standards of the marina. One student was particularly impressed with the kayaking – so much so that he is now considering starting private kayaking lessons. One of many activities stood out more than others … WATER FREEDOM, which was a spectacular activity according to the children. It was so amazing due the fact that they had the opportunity to do whatever they liked from a choice of: Kayaking, Canadian Canoeing, Surfing, Swimming and many more awesome activities. All in all, the feeling was that the residential was an experience like no other. Written by Year 6 children

In safe hands You are in safe hands at Auckley school and that‟s official. Children have been learning the skills of first aid and the school has just been awarded the “ St Johns Ambulance Schools Mark” which is a national award given to schools for their commitment to the safety and health of the pupils and staff. Children have really enjoyed showing off their new found skills on each other and are pleased that their efforts have been recognised. Year 1 visit Cleethorpes A couple of weeks ago Year 1 visited Cleethorpes as part of their topic on the seaside. After a long drive, we arrived and went for a walk on the salt marsh to look at the different habitats. We then took a train ride to the beach where we had a picnic and built sandcastles. We had a fabulous day and were very lucky with the weather. Africa Project Celebration We invited parents to come into school to look at all of the work we have completed through our Africa project to raise money for Happy House, a Kenyan orphanage. We set up „taster‟ activities so the parents could try out the new skills we have learnt. We also had demonstrations of African dance, cookery and Tinga Tinga animations to show. The afternoon was a great success and we have managed to raise £322.28 in total for Happy House orphanage.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Dear readers,

Cornering

Superb cornering is a skill to master. Here‘s how to do it. Many aspects of Advanced Driving are exhilarating, but smooth, progressive, and safe cornering is arguably the most enjoyable. Advanced Drivers handle corners in a prepared and precise way, with superb observation, great planning, a good line through the bend and a progressive exit. These are crucial elements that raise driving standards above those of the everyday motorist. Even the innocuous corner requires real concentration. What is the limit point of vision? The limit point is the furthest point ahead at which you have a clear view of the road surface. On a clear, level road this is the point at which the right and left-hand sides of the road appear to meet. Advanced Drivers always drive at a speed that allows them to stop (on their own side of the road) within the distance they can see is clear- that is the distance between them and the limit point This determines how fast you can drive. The further away the limit point is the faster you can go, as you have more room to stop in - and vice versa. This applies to junctions as well as bends. Match your velocity to the speed the ―limit point‖ moves away from you, providing you can stop in the distance that you can see is clear. If you watch the limit point as you approach a bend or a junction, you‘ll notice that it may move. If it moves towards you, slow down, as the bend or turn is tightening. If it moves away from you, it means the road is opening up. This ‗Limit point technique‘ involves matching your speed, to the speed the limit point moves, accelerating or slowing your vehicle accordingly. Using this method ensures the right choice of speed and the correct gear selection. This will enable you to maintain your vehicle‘s balance throughout any turn or curve. The vehicle will be on the correct side of the road in a balanced and controllable state, and you will be able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear. If you are interested in the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 01302 886 276

Swimming Shorts, Grey Hair and God Well it‘s August and traditionally it is holiday time again, which also means it must be raining! I‘ve just returned from a mid-week break at Centre Parcs, so it didn‘t matter if it rained or not as most things were undercover. If you read this page regularly then you‘ll know we usually holiday in our caravan, but this year both my parents celebrated their 70th birthdays and very kindly took us all away to celebrate. So, picture it if you dare, yours truly leaving the changing rooms and entering the subtropical swimming paradise. Think Australian surfer dude - tanned, fit, good looking and wearing flowery board shorts…got it? Well that was me. I had a tan, but only on one side of my face because I‘d failed to apply enough sunscreen in Bridlington the other week! Fit? Yes, I was fit to slide down the water chutes all day. Good looking, well I thought so until my eldest exclaimed, ―Dad, your chest hair is going grey.‖ Flowery shorts, you bet. But then I wouldn‘t see anyone I knew would I? ―Hello vicar‖ said a child from one of our primary schools! Nevertheless, I had the opportunity to do different activities with all my children, and it was so good to spend time being dad. I saw another father in the swimming pool playing with their child who was perhaps just 12 months or so old. Dad was throwing them in the air, catching them, and letting them splash into the water. They were laughing and smiling – the bond between the two of them was evident. This young baby trusted their dad completely, enjoyed being with them, and dad‘s love was unconditional. You couldn‘t help but watch them and smile. It made me think. I believe this is the relationship God desires with everyone. He offers a relationship where we as his children can trust him absolutely, enjoy being in his presence, and know His unconditional love. Age, background, grey chest hair and dodgy shorts don‘t matter. He just wants to

know you. Enjoy the summer! Blessings. Revd. Neil Redeyoff St Saviour's, Auckley & St Oswald's & Holy Trinity, Finningley. 01302 770240 or email neilredeyoff1@btinternet.com
