News, News, News, News, News, News... Kilham Hall News Well, Hallowe’en has come and gone for another year and our Hallowe’en Children’s Party, held in the Hall on Sunday 27th October, was a great success and everyone had a spooktastic time! All tickets were sold and Mr Dan entertained the children with tricks and games galore. The Hall was decorated in witchy style and thanks must go to the Hall Committee members who gave up their Sunday to decorate the Hall beforehand and to ensure that the afternoon went smoothly, organising the refreshments and clearing up afterwards. Elsewhere, the Hall’s weekly activities are all in full, autumnal swing and the Hall continues to be booked at weekends for the many private parties taking place in the village. On Tuesday 5th November, the Coffee Club enjoyed a special morning to celebrate its 4th anniversary and members were treated to free cakes and refreshments to say ‘Thank you’ for their regular support. The Tuesday Club is thriving and membership has exceeded the 60 mark with new members coming to join us on a regular basis. Dates for the Diary are Tuesday December 10th which is the Christmas extravaganza. 10am ‘til 2pm and a Pie and Pea lunch with special Festive entertainment as always. Tuesday 17th December will be the final Coffee Club of the year until 2014. Our committee AGM was held on Monday 4th November with 2 members of the public in attendance; Thank you to those for joining us. Noreen Pearson is to continue as Chair for which we are very grateful. Finally, apologies for any inconvenience caused throughout the remainder of this year, as extensive repairs and improvements are made to the drainage system of the Hall. News From Finningley School F2 Mud people Our foundation class are often absent from the class this year! At first this really worried me about attendance figures but after some detective work it turns out that they have been exploring and learning in the wild area. We are really lucky to have large woodland at the bottom of our field and F2 are making the most of it. They have produced stunning autumn paintings on canvas just like the impressionist masters, they have used clay to create mud monsters on the sides of tree trunks and now they are busy constructing a mud kitchen. We won’t be cooking school dinners down there but the children will be learning valuable things about the environment around them and how local wild life lives.
Halloween Glee To end the October half term our after school dance classes performed their spooky dances and movements in a great celebration performance. Parents were invited and we saw The Monster Mash, The Adams Family and The Time Warp. Children danced and sung with lots of skill and enthusiasm and all had a fantastic time. Street dance, Acro club and Glee are now rehearsing their Christmas numbers.
Spooky disco Friends of school put on a brilliant disco in the first week of November. School was decorated, refreshments were ordered and DJ Louis was in place with ‘banging tunes’. We raised over £600 towards our ipad art and design project this year. Well done friends of St Oswald’s!
Year 2 Celebration party Year two brought the first half term of their celebrations topic to a close with a superb party in class. The children had used TASC to help them plan every element in their day including maths to weigh, measure and make cupcakes, art to supply decorations for the room and ICT skills to put together a refreshments requirements list. Children wrote instructional texts to organise party games and used great persuasive argument to include parents and helpers. At the culmination of it all 30 5 and 6 year old had the time of their lives dancing, playing and eating and knowing that they had sorted it all for themselves.
Hayfield School Arts Festival On Friday 15th November 6 of our year six artists went to Hayfield for an immersion day in the art studio’s entitled ‘A History of Print’. The children experimented with all sorts of different print types and styles. Their real triumph was creating wood cut printing blocks with their initials on that they then printed in multi colours. Fantastic creative fun for year 6!

Hill House Rugby Festival. On Friday 15th November we took a boys and girls team to the first Hill House rugby festival. It was a beautiful autumn morning and we arrived at 9.30am to be shown into our changing room to prepare. Mr Jamie Lennard, the current Doncaster Knights player who had provided our coaching, greeted us and explained the order of the day. We were to play three matches in each league. Hatchell Wood, Kirk Sandal and Tickhill St Mary’s were also there and all were pretty excited. Games began at 10.00am and our boys narrowly lost to Kirk Sandal in the initial game. Long range try’s from Jake D and Ryan W were real highlights of the first match and we came off eager for our second opponents. The girls started with a draw to Kirk Sandal girls with Ellie K R showing good pace and excellent positional skill. In the second round of games the boys took the lead through great runs from Ben K and William C. Jake D’s and Ciaran B were fearsome in their tackling and chasing and with minutes to go it looked like we would achieve our first win. Unfortunately Hatchell Wood’s nippy winger made a grounding on the far wing to hold us to a draw. The girls were now in their swing and Erin S and Katherine H played really strong games in our second match. Ellie and Casey W delivered great try’s and Elle Jo supported really well at break down of play. The boy’s final game saw them with an outside chance of winning the tournament but their year 5 legs started to tire in the second half as we surrendered a lead. Luca H and Michael C battled to the end and made thrilling runs but we went down 4-5 to St Mary’s Tickhill. The girls finished with a loss to St Mary’s too being unable to contain a nippy winger from the Tickhill team. Lilly C kept running until the end and nearly ran a draw saving try in at the death. From there the adults and children went to lunch in the Hill House dining hall and much conversation about how good the tournament had been was had. All in all a great day of rugby with two of our boys enquiring about coaching at the Knights…. We’ll be back next year.

Branton St Wilfrid’s School News It has been a very busy time at school and our children have taken part in a range of activities to enhance the curriculum.
Class 1 visit to Eureka As part of our topic work ‘All About Me,’ Class 1 went on a school visit to Eureka. We had a focus session called ‘Meet the Doctor’ where we could ask lots of questions and find out lots of information about our senses. We found out lots of information about our body through lots of hands on and practical activities. We had a fun filled fab day!
Class 4 Visitor- Gaius Flavius Baca
On Tuesday the 12th of November we had a very special visitor in Class 4, Gaius Flavius Baca, the Roman Soldier. Gaius was able to show us all the different weapons and helmets, as well as actual Roman artefacts. The children particularly enjoyed the army drills, where they were able to make formations such as the tortoise and pig snout!
Every child also had the opportunity to dress as a Roman soldier, all the children agreed the equipment was pretty heavy once on! Eco Friends visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park On Wednesday 13th November Eco-friends from Branton St Wilfrid’s went to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park to help build a bug house, and learn about the Conservation Champions Competition that the Yorkshire Wildlife Park is launching. We had sticks and plastic tubes and used them to make the bug house as full as we could. Eventually, every nook and cranny was full of either leaves, sticks, plastic tubes or bark. Then we had a few photos and a chance to explore the park. Overall, Eco-friends enjoyed our visit especially with time in the Monkey Playhouse, and would like to thank the Yorkshire Wildlife Park for an excellent morning! By Brooke Black

Cake Sale for Cancer Research Uk Several Year 6 children worked together to plan and hold a cake sale in school to raise money for the Cancer Research Charity. News From Auckley School Hello readers, As year 6 students and aspiring journalists, we have been given the exciting challenge to become the writers of Auckley School’s page… Year 3 have recently started a new exciting topic called Children of the Revolution. To help them get into character, they visited Kelham Island and were transported into a Victorian world. During the trip they were split into groups of girls and boys so they could experience what true Victorian life was like. The girls were shown how to make rag rugs and the boys were educated by a strict master. They thoroughly enjoyed seeing the UK’s biggest steam engine burst into life! Whilst undertaking their World War Two topic, year 5 have been getting into the role of evacuees by dressing up in suitable attire. In addition to this, they held a 1940’s inspired tea party where parents were invited to eat lots of cake and try Mrs Bowling’s famous carrot cookies!
Auckley School had a special visitor to get everyone in the spirit of Children In Need, raising £265 Read about our Christmas events next month ! From Y6

Also please do not park on the grass verges particularly on Doncaster Road so as not to spoil the appearance of these areas around the village.

Auckley Parish Council Newsletter November /December 2013
Christmas Carol Singing This year the event will be held in the Eagle and Child car park commencing at 7.00 p.m. The Armthorpe Elmfield brass band will accompany the singing, and a collection will be held in aid of the Doncaster branch of ‘MIND’, an organisation that promotes and protects good mental health for all. Proposed Reduction in Speed Limit Council is pleased to learn that DMBC intends to implement a 20 mph speed limit on School Lane and will be enforced from its junction with Main Street to 5 metres beyond the junction with Spey Drive. A 20 mph limit will also apply to The Hollows estate road. Railway Bridge, Hurst Lane Earlier this year we were informed that the railway bridge at Hurst Lane, Auckley would be demolished and a new bridge constructed, with work commencing on 30th November for a period of 8 weeks. Balfour Beatty has now advised that the reconstruction will not take place, instead the rail track will be lowered to achieve the required clearance for the rail traffic. Parking of Vehicles Some irresponsible drivers continue to park on the double yellow lines outside the shops at Ellers Lane. This results in congestion of the road and poses a danger to passing motorists and pedestrians crossing the road at this location, particularly children on their way to and from school. In the interests of health and safety it would be appreciated if motorists could park in the car park adjacent to the shops.
Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year

The 12 Questions of Christmas 1. The angel Gabriel told Mary that she would have a son. True: Luke 1:26-33 - Yep, one of the two named good angels in the Bible (the other is Michael). 2. An angel told Joseph to name the baby Jesus. True: Matthew 1:20-21 - Poor Joseph gets left out of the story a lot. 4. Mary rode a donkey to Bethlehem. False: Despite what you see in all the pictures and movies, the Bible says nothing about Mary riding a donkey. Maybe she did . . . maybe she walked . . . maybe she rode a camel…or even a Harley Davidson…erm no! 5. Jesus was born on December 25. False: The Bible does not give a date. Various tradition says it was most likely in the spring or autumn. 6. Baby Jesus never cried, even when awakened by noisy barn animals. False: Despite what you have heard your whole life in Away in a Manger, this is not in the Bible. 7. After announcing Jesus birth to the shepherds the angels sang "Glory to God in the highest.” False: Luke 2:13-14 - Despite what you have heard in Hark the Herald Angels Sing (one of my favourite Christmas carols), Luke only records the angels saying those famous words. 8. The shepherds told others about Jesus. True: Luke 2:17 - I bet they got some strange looks. 9. A little drummer visited Jesus in the stable. False: Sorry, no such person in the Bible. No Rum-pa-pum-pum for Baby Jesus. 10. The wise men were kings from the East. False: I'm really not sure how this one got started since there is absolutely no mention in the Bible of them being kings. They sound a lot more like rich astronomers or astrologers to me. 11. The wise men followed the star from the East straight to Bethlehem. False: Matthew 2:1, 9-10 - They saw the star in the East, went to Jerusalem, had an ill-advised powwow with the psychotic King Herod, found out from the scribes that Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, and then the star reappeared and led them to the exact place where Jesus was. 12. The main reason Jesus was born was to teach us to be nice to each other. False: Matthew 1:21, Mark 10:45, Luke 19:10, John 3:16, Romans 10:9-11 - While Jesus did teach and demonstrate through his life many things about how we ought to live, he made it clear throughout his ministry that his primary purpose was to give his life in order to save us from our sins. The first Christmas gift, the only Christmas gift required. "Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!" (II Corinthians 9:15)
Wishing you a happy Christmas and a peaceful new year. Revd. Neil Redeyoff St Saviour's, Auckley & St Oswald's & Holy Trinity, Finningley
