Editor’s Letter ...Well we knew we wouldn’t get away with it! I am sure it wont be the last of the snow but we did get off lightly this time compared to other parts of the country. The village of Branton welcomes a new Head Teacher to St Wilfrid’s School. Miss Oakes took up post in January and we all wish her the very best in her new role. Branton will also be welcoming new neighbours to the David Wilson development on Doncaster Road. The Woodlands Walk development has not yet (at the time of print) been granted planning permission but this is looking imminent.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

January/February 2013 Council’s Precept The Parish Precept is the amount that we ask Doncaster Council to collect on our behalf. Apart from football fees this is Council’s only source of income, and all monies are spent on matters supporting the residents of Auckley Parish. Last year the precept was £28,000. This has been increased to £28,560 for the 2013/2014 financial year to allow for inflation. Flooding of Recreation Ground Following prolonged heavy rain in December the River Torne overflowed onto adjoining land including the Riverside Park at Auckley where a large pond has formed at the far end of the children’s play area. The water is slow to drain away as the ground is already saturated and the Parish Council is consulting with the Environment Agency regarding dispersal of the water. Would parents please ensure children do not play around the pond and risk falling into the water. ‘Carols Round the Tree’ The carol singing round the Christmas tree was planned to take place on the 19th December but sadly had to be cancelled due to heavy and persistent rain – the first time in 30 years! The Parish Council made the decision to cancel because there is no shelter at this location, and members of the band would have been drenched within minutes. Arrangements are being made for the next carol singing in December 2013 to be held at a location where cover is provided nearby in case of rain. Auckley Christmas Market The Christmas Market once again proved to be very successful and was well attended. There were a number of different stalls from the previous year selling a whole range of goods from food to Christmas lights, and Santa’s Grotto proved very popular. A tremendous amount of work goes into planning and staging this event and members of the committee and helpers are to be congratulated for their efforts.

Saint Oswald’s Academy News Sports hall athletics at Hayfield 20 boys and girls from years 5 and 6 excitedly embarked on the journey to Hayfield Academy to take part in the annual indoor athletics festival. We arrived in good time and were straight into it with a series of activities in circuit. Children had a chance to take part in sprinting. Relay races, hurdles, long jump, vertical jump, speed bouncing and throwing the javelin! The javelins were foam so we all came back with the same number of eyes we went with. The children were full of it and enthused about it all the way back to school. Olympians of the future? I hope so!

Myths and Legends of Year 5 Mrs Cowley, Mrs Valentine and year 5 worked with Mr Grey, a visiting teacher, to launch their Myths and Legends topic in the first week of the term. Children were introduced to a range of heroes and villains, the settings of their stories and the cultures they came from. The pupils had a series of drama workshops to role play a hero, act out a key scene or freeze frame a dramatic event. They raided the staffroom tea and coffee to create their own ancient maps and they have plotted a way through what is to be a really exciting topic for the new term.

Year 2 used their first week in school to get out and about and explore the wonderful grounds we have. They have just started a project looking at the delicate nature of the world we share with plants and animals around us. Much gentle collection took place and the pupils have embarked on superb art to represent their findings. In the words of one of our Year 2 - Year 2 started the Our World topic by having a treasure hunt on the school field. They worked in groups to find eight different objects, which were on a list. It was a successful treasure hunt and everyone enjoyed it!

Flying High Year 3 have been planning their up and coming visit to the airport by researching destinations, measuring distances and comparing climates. They are due at Robin Hood for a science and design day on the 31st. A Sticky Spot Year 6 are investigating chemical changes this tern. They started by mixing all manner of concoctions that solidified, stuck things together (not always the ones they wanted) and transformed on touch. Scientists of tomorrow.... F2 Fashion Reception class had a fantastic cat walk fashion show on Tuesday to launch their ‘Clothes’ project. School was full of princesses, super heroes, police officers and knights. Jean Paul Gaulthier eat your heart out. Year 1 Travel–a-thon Year 1 spent Monday the 14th using as many forms of transport as they could. After using cars to get to Kirk Sandal train station they rode into town for a bus ride back to school. Miss Womack is so much kinder than me because I suggested getting off at the airport to see the planes then using good old fashioned shoe leather to get home! Acting Class Frankie Taylor made her debut TV appearance on Saturday 5th January in BBC 1’s Casualty. Frankie, who has huge ambitions to act for a living, played the part of a young sister confronted with the death of her older sibling. It was a heart rending performance and all at school were immensely proud. Panto stars Pupils from St Oswald’s were also found treading the board at Holy Trinity’s Christmas panto this year both Joe’s with Hannah from Y6 played key roles in an hilarious mix of folk stories and panto’s everyone loves. MacMillan Support Pupils and parents baked mammoth amounts of buns, cakes and biscuits for our post performance MacMillan fund raising in December. We have adopted MacMillan as our charity for the year and thanks to sterling efforts we have already sent them £158.56. Well done to everyone. Playground leaders of 2013 Being of growing years and having some of the Victor Meldrew about me I spent the latter part of last school year worrying about children who could hack into the Pentagon and reach endless levels on Skylanders but were a little lost in the fresh air at playtimes. Mrs Middlebrook came to the rescue resurrecting our playground leaders. Volunteers from key stage two were trained to teach a wide variety of outdoor games. They were equipped with hoops. Balls, skipping ropes and allsorts of balls. Dressed in brightly coloured t shirts they set off at lunch time play to engage our younger children in games and fun sessions. Helped by Mrs Bonakdar, one of our midday supervisors they have been a great success. Children laughing, playing together and not a DS in sight... brilliant!

Auckley School News An inspector calls! Auckley School had the ‘pleasure’ of an Ofsted inspection just before Christmas. Two inspectors, Mr Alan Lemon and Mr Michael Blaylock, spent two days in the school on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th December. Under the new Ofsted arrangements, schools are given much shorter notice and the first time the school were made aware of the impending inspection was on Monday 3rd December at lunchtime. The inspectors arrived at 8.00 am Tuesday morning and met all the staff. Over the two days they certainly got to know all about the school. The main focus of the inspection was the teaching and learning and the inspectors spent most of their time observing lessons in the classroom. They also looked closely at the work produced by the children as well as chatting with pupils to find out what they thought of their school. Six year 5 and 6 pupils were chosen to speak to an inspector. The inspectors were greatly impressed with the pupils and remarked on their high standards of behaviour. The two days did pass quickly and the report did highlight many of the school’s strengths. They noted that: ‘progress in English is outstanding’ because of the quality of teaching across the school. Equally impressive was the level attained by the children in the early years; ‘They enjoy their experiences thoroughly and approach their work and activities with enthusiasm and energy. Nursery children are quick to make friends and play together happily.’ The report did highlight areas for development and how the school can move to outstanding in the future. The chairperson of the governing body, Mrs Rebecca Milner commented: ‘’We were thrilled with the outcome of the report which rightfully acknowledged the hard work, commitment and dedication of the staff – a report to be proud of and we certainly are!’’ Year 6 Junior Bake Off Year 6 have recently been busy working on a Junior Bake Off challenge. Branton St Wilfrid’s School News New Head Teacher Happy New Year! I am delighted to have eventually taken up my post as Head Teacher following my appointment last May and would like to say a big “Thank You” to all the staff, pupils and parents who have made my first few days so enjoyable and have answered my numerous questions. I am joined by our new Deputy Head Teacher, Miss Louise Brown who also took up post at the start of January. We both look forward to working with you in the future. Indoor Athletics at Hayfield School On Tuesday 15th January a group of 16 year 6 pupils visited Hayfield School to take part in a primary indoor athletics competition. Having had very little opportunity for practice the group tried their hardest in all activities which included a combination of track and field events. Pupils participated in 1 lap and 2 lap sprints, hurdles, sprint relay, hurdles relay, mixed girls and boys relays, standing long jump, vertical jump, speed bounce, soft javelin and sitting ball throw. Mrs Neville and Mrs Roberts commented on the superb effort of all pupils and the positive sporting attitude displayed by all. After a thoroughly enjoyable session we were delighted to learn that our team had won the competition and will now represent the pyramid of schools at the next round to be held at the Dome in February. The team, pictured with their trophy, consisted of Matti, Thomas, Joseph, Lewis, Thomas, Harry, Lewis, Kieron, Charlie, Harvey, Saskia, Freya, Alice, Finlay, Brooke and Georgina. Well done! What a fantastic start to the New Year. School Pantomime

St Saviours, Auckley

St Oswald’s & Holy Trinity, Finningley

Scratching The Car They were about 17 at the time, and finally able to drive a car. They took their mum to work in a car that a friend had lent her for the day. After dropping off mum off their small cousin jumps to the front seat while eating crisps. The driveway to the house they lived in was on a slope so they decided to hit the accelerator hard and try to make it up in 3rd gear. Big mistake!. The car stalls and thanks to gravity it starts rolling back down the slope backwards! The drivers lack of experience was evident as they didn’t think to pull on the handbrake and they failed to stop the car. With a main road on their left and two connecting roads right behind them everything turned to slow motion. Their cousin was still eating their crisps, and the driver as pale as snow as in their head a million and one things crossed their mind. Thankfully a wall managed to step in. It scratched the right side of the car pinning us to a complete stop. Frightened and thankful that no car had appeared to do the job, the driver turned to check on their cousin, and with his eyes nearly popping out of it’s sockets, he was still eating crisps, at a much more rapid pace of course, but he was ok. They turned on the car, drove up the slope, parked the car and left for work frightened and worried like never before. They spent the whole day scared, worried, thinking constantly of the mess they had made. Finally, the time came to face their fear, telling their mother! As they walked up that slope once again, they could see the car and the scratch. At the same time mother comes out of the house. She looks at our young driver, not with anger, but with compassion. Having lived longer she wisely said these words: "It’s ok son, that’s what money is for. We’ll get it fixed!" That’s it! You know, God has a better perspective as well. Our worst struggles are, in his view, nothing worse that a reparable scratch on a car. Isn’t it good to know that with Him, everything works for the good of those who love Him? Blessings
