News, News, News, News, News, News... Christmas Fayre at St Saviour‟s in Auckley. It was a day of mixed emotions for us on Saturday 26 November when we held our annual Christmas Fayre at St Saviour‟s in Auckley. We started off on a grateful high with the members of the circuit training club putting all the tables out for us. This turned to dismay, despair and disbelief when we realised that thieves had stolen the wine etc for the tombola and the chocolate prizes for the toddlers stall, from the church. There were quite a few un-Christian thoughts and words expressed! Word soon spread, the community was incensed by the despicable theft and the response was amazing. People were so very kind and replacement bottles, chocolate, gifts etc, were handed in so the day was not ruined. Their actions spoke realms and lifted our hearts. THANK YOU.

Kilham Hall, Branton On December 13th, the Tuesday morning Coffee Club enjoyed a wonderful morning of festive fun during the last gathering of 2011. Mince pies and cakes were served along with the usual tea and coffee and on this occasion the food and drinks were free as a gift from the committee to the Coffee club regulars! Sheila and Christine provided the musical entertainment accompanied by Christine's husband, Reg, on the organ and we were all then invited to join them in singing our favourite carols. We had a festive quiz and our usual bingo session and the Hall was filled with much chatter and laughter for 2 hours. The Coffee Club starts again on Tuesday 10th January 2012 and everyone is welcome to join us in the New Year. 10am til 11.30am, every Tuesday morning, at Kilham Hall, Kilham Lane, Branton.

We went on to have a very successful day with lots of visitors enjoying the various stalls and seasonal refreshments, whilst raising funds for the church at the same time.

Cantley with Branton WI On November 10th our talk on Hypnotherapy was cancelled , due to the speakers mother being taken ill. A last minute decision was made to hold a games and social evening, which gave us a chance to meet our new members. November 14th we had a visit to Brigg Garden Centre. This was a lovely day out and lots of parcels arrived back on the coach, so some Christmas shopping had been accomplished. December 8th we have a demonstration on gift wrapping which will give ideas on how to wrap the presents. January 12th another year begins with our first meeting of the year our speaker is Sylvia Atkinson who speaks about an unexpected family history. Visitors are always welcome. News, News, News, News, News, News... Finningley Village Tuesday Club Spring Programme 2012. The Club Meets in Finningley Village Hall at 145p.m. on the third Tuesday in the month Tuesday January 17th Come and help us ring in 2012. Mr. John Marsden will give a talk and demonstration in the art of hand bell ringing. This should be a really entertaining, informative and enjoyable afternoon. Tuesday February 21st. A talk from a member of The Police Helicopter Service. Tuesday March 20th. “ Kenyan Experience” A talk and slide show by Chris Adamson

Finningley's “Spirit Of Christmas” The evening of December 5th was cold, dark and not a little wet but it didn't dampen the spirits of the residents of Finningley who met on the village green to witness the start of the festive season with the official switching on of the Christmas tree lights. The Rector Neil Readeyoff then introduced Finningley School Choir who set the mood by singing, quite beautifully, “Away In A Manger” before the assembled gathering joined in with other favourite Carols ably assisted by Jonathan Scully and friends on a selection of brass instruments. As the weather closed in, and after a rendition of, “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” the merry throng moved over to the Village Hall where the children were entertained with a story and an early visit from Father Christmas while the adults enjoyed mince pies and mulled wine. We were really overwhelmed with the number of villagers who made the effort to come out and join us for the evening and wish to thank them all for their support and patience as we tried to accommodate them. Finningley Village Community Group would like to extend their thanks to all those who gave of their time and effort, the Parish Council for arranging for the tree light to be on the tree and working, the Rector for agreeing to lead the evening, Jonathan Scully and friends, Finningley School Choir, Finningley W.I for providing and serving the mince pies and the many others who helped organise, set up the hall and serve and clear throughout the evening.

News, News, News, News, News, News... Carol Singing at Kilham Hall

Cantley with Branton Parish Council held their annual Christmas carols event again at Kilham Hall with the support of Kilham Hall management committee and St Wilfrids school in Branton. This turned out to be a lovely event, well attended again with many local people. The children had a few carols to sing on their own and sang beautifully with Armthorpe Elmfield Brass band providing the music. Father Christmas arrived after the singing finished with lots of sweets to hand out to the children for all their hard work. As you can imagine, there was quite a queue! Cantley with Branton WI provided mince pies as usual (which were scrumptious) and a raffle was held by the management committee to raise funds towards the upkeep of the Hall. All prizes were collected apart from blue ticket number 410. If you have the winning ticket, your prize awaits you. Please contact Barbara Fussey at Branton post office or call along to the committees weekly coffee morning, held every Tuesday morning in term time.

Cantley with Branton Parish Council have funded a new ball wall and basket ball net at Kilham Hall playing fields in Branton. There is also a tarmac area to allow young people to practice their basket ball/net ball skills. The Parish Council funded this project after the issue was raised by young people in Branton about the lack of youth facilities. The Council hopes the young people of the village make full use of this new provision.

Auckley Christmas Market 2011 It was a difficult start to the day with the wind swirling around causing havoc and hounding our poor volunteers who were trying to put the stalls up. What a sight when they were trying to get the covers on the stalls, it looked like they would be whisked away taking the covers and everyone with them! The volunteers worked like Trojans and I cannot thank these people enough because without them the market could never have taken place, they started at 8am on Tuesday and worked tirelessly hard throughout the day and night to the early hours of Wednesday, erecting and dismantling the stalls and helping to unload and load traders goods from vehicles as well as patrolling the market itself. Again, we had a bumper crowd of visitors to Auckley, somewhere in the region of 10000 with people arriving from 3.30pm. This year, the stalls were the best we have ever had with a fabulous selection of quality goods. Traders have once again already booked their stalls for our 2012 Christmas Market. Thank you to everyone who supported this event, we hope you had a Merry Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year from all The Committee of Auckley Christmas Market. Marilyn Cockett

News from Hayfield Lane Primary School

Young Voices On the 6th December 38 pupils from our year 3, 4, 5 and 6 classes headed off to Sheffield Arena for the Young Voices concert. This year the organisation is celebrating its 15th year of this event and this was our 4th year of attending. The children worked so hard during the autumn term to learn the songs and dance moves and the concert is the reward of all their efforts. They are so proud of themselves and get so much from the experience of being part of such an amazing event. Mrs Green the music teacher commented “I was extremely proud of the whole choir. Their enthusiasm and behaviour on the day was incredible. They were a credit to our school! I can‟t wait for next year‟s concert now!” Children In Need Day At Hayfield Lane we never let this day go by without the school taking part in this fantastic fund raising event, raising lots of money and having a bit of fun at the same time. This year was no exception, with the theme being „Let‟s wear spots and raise lots‟, pupils and staff came to school dressed in a variety of spotty clothing. The children took part in a „Beat the Teacher‟ challenge where children had to race against the teachers doing a variety of activities but the teachers couldn‟t see what they were doing! We also held a cake sale which is always popular. We were very proud by the end of the day to have raised £336. Christmas at Hayfield Lane We have had a very busy time leading up to the end of term. Children in school have had a number of nativity stories to rehearse for. Our foundation stage children learnt the songs and actions for „The Nativity Party‟, KS1 children enjoyed telling the story of Larry the Lamb and the „Not such a Silent Night‟ and KS2 retold the Hans Christian Andersen story of „The Match girl‟s Christmas‟ which entwines with the original nativity story. The school is very proud of all the children who learnt their lines and songs so well and put on fantastic performances for parents and friends to come and watch. Staff and pupils at Hayfield Lane would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! And look forward to bringing you more news in 2012.

Finningley CE Primary November and December news 2011 After the successes of Get Bright bike week we swiftly moved on to our work on Anti bullying week 2011. Whilst we have outstanding behaviour from our pupils and very few incidents of bad behaviour we always put everything into Anti Bullying week as the children need to know what to do when they might need help and need to grow up knowing bullying is never acceptable. The children of the newly elected school council for 2001-2012 designed and lead the week as we feel the work is for the children so should come from the children. The week kicked off with a launch assembly where school council spoke about „ways to beat bullying. In assembly and set a poster competition in motion. Classes then played games, ran circle times and worked through a series of lessons researched by the children from the schools anti bullying alliance. By mid week the school council had led a „tell , tell, tell‟ drop in mto help shy children and planned an excellent „Who Wants to be a millionaire‟ anti bullying edition assembly. School council and class representatives spent Thursday breaks undertaking our yearly re write of the Anti bullying policy in child speak as it needs to work the people it‟ s meant. School was full of advice posters and friend slips. We ended the week with a Dress Blue Friday and two school disco‟s called the „Beat the Bullies Dances‟. Pupils had a fantastic time and, more importantly, everyone knew that help was there for any problem and no one was on their own. A super week and well done school council.

Auckley Parish Council Newsletter January 2012

Play Journey for Riverside Park Auckley The Riverside park project has been designed as a safe and stimulating environment for children to play. Auckley Parish Council, play equipment suppliers SMP Playgrounds and local Architect and Auckley resident Anthony Snowden have all worked together to achieve a high standard of design in accordance with the current thinking in this field. The overall aim is to create a park with opportunities to play in both natural and manmade environments simultaneously in order to provide play experiences both full of challenges and beneficial play experiences, maximising the play value. The design and layout is planned to ensure the play experience is sustainable, durable and inclusive for all, giving value for money and fitting in with Doncaster Council‟s guidelines for play equipment and supported by SMP‟s extensive equipment guarantees. In order to maintain the high standard of these facilities, Auckley Parish Council will be supported with site inspections through the procurement of the project by Anthony Snowden, Architect. Also to maintain safety, a programme of playground inspections is to be carried out by the manufacturer‟s maintenance teams at SMP Playgrounds. The flow in the park is to outline the area and challenges of the units, starting with the younger area towards the opening of the park incorporating swinging with cradle and flat seat swings, spinning with a DDA inclusive roundabout and exploratory multiunit that is easy to access and has a slide climbing structure and binoculars for imaginative play. The site features are given generous space to maximise the opportunities for children to run and enjoy the natural elements of the logs and mounds aiding balance and imagination. The park flows round to more challenging and dynamic equipment to incorporate all aspects of play, climbing, balancing, sliding, spinning and inclusive play. A cable run way for speed and excitement, a nexus core that creates 10+ activities and ways to climb. A large climbing net is a great focal point with all the equipment to support social interaction and promote a many user experience. The use of „Grassmatt‟ safety surface will ensure the natural look of the park is maintained and keeps costs of maintenance to a minimum. Work is planned to take a period of 4 weeks on site and is expected to be completed on December 23, weather permitting. The completed park will incorporate the natural feel of the park using its flow of spaces and equipment to create a challenging, exciting play area with all possible play value, ages and abilities addressed.

Operation Christmas Child This term, Auckley School Council have been collecting items to be packed up and sent to Operation Christmas Child. This is a charity that gives gifts to children who are less fortunate around the world. They have been very successful and collected enough presents to fill 15 shoe boxes. A big thank you to all those who generously donated gifts. Fund Raising We have been busy raising money for a number of different causes this term. On Friday 18th November, Children in Need day, children at Auckley dressed up in spots for the day to raise £ 163.55. Children in year 5 have been making and selling buns in school which raised £55 for Bluebell Wood and a further £15 for Operation Christmas Child. Auckley School have also raised £62.52 towards the poppy appeal. Well done children for all of your efforts. Sports Year 5 and 6 managed to come first in the pyramid football tournament earlier this term and as a result represented the pyramid at Rossington. They did not win this time however all performed very well and were fantastic advocates for the school. We also have some excellent runners in year 3 and 4. A number of children represented our school in the pyramid cross country and they managed to come second over all. Congratulations to all our budding athletes.

Christmas Concerts

Well done to all children who took part in our Christmas performances this week. Foundation were fantastic in their version of the Nativity. Mary sang a beautiful solo which bought tears to many parents‟ eyes. They also sang a number of Christmas songs and Rudolph and his reindeers‟ made an appearance. Year 1 and 2 also performed the story of the Nativity using the play „It‟s a baby‟. Angels, shepherds, kings, sheep and camels all sang beautifully and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. KS2 were wonderful in their pantomime „Dwarf Factor‟, the amalgamation of X factor and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had the audience rolling in the aisles. Well done once again to all of our little performers, thank you for so much fun. All that remains is for us to wish everyone a very merry Christmas from us all at Auckley School.

News From Branton St Wilfrid‟s Primary School

December is always a lovely and extremely busy month in school. At the moment every carpet in school is sparkling with glitter that has fallen off cards and craft items and I suspect our cleaning team will still be vacuuming up the last traces for some time to come! Christmas Fair Thank you to everyone who supported our Christmas Fair. During „Factory Week‟ leading up to the Fair, each class made craft items in the afternoons. We greatly appreciate the help from parents and relatives who came into school to help the children. As usual huge numbers of lovely craft items were created including candle holders, Christmas crackers and baubles, wind chimes, painted piggy banks and fridge magnets and the list goes on! All these items were sold at the Fair and, in addition, we had our tombola, white elephant and raffle stalls as well as Father Christmas in his grotto! Once again, our school was very lucky to have the generous support of www.ebuyer.com who donated an Acer netbook as the first prize in our raffle! Our Christmas Fair raised £1500 for our School Fund so that we can buy extra resources for all the children in school. This amount is the most we have ever raised at a Christmas Fair.

Christmas Concerts Well done to all the children in school for all their work in preparing and performing two lovely Christmas Concerts. Our Infant Concert was called „A Home of Their Own‟. This told the tale of two little mice who grow up and need to find a home of their own. After attempting to find a home in many different places without success, our two mice found a wonderful new home in a stable and were able to watch the Christmas story unfold before them! The Juniors performed „Primary School Christmas Musical‟. This play charted the humorous trials and tribulations of a primary school as the teachers and children prepare a Key Stage 2 nativity play! Young Voices’ Concert In December our Jubilate choir went to Sheffield Arena to take part in the annual „Young Voices‟ Concert. We joined a choir of 5000 children from schools across Doncaster, Rotherham,

Into 2012 One more step along the world I go, one more step along the world I go. From the old things to the new Keep me travelling along with you The verse above is taken from a hymn which has become quite popular at weddings, Christenings, and leavers services, and of talks of journeying, not alone, but with God. As I sit and write this I„ve realised that I have now been a minister for over 10 years. Yet it seems only 2 minutes since I was standing nervously in Chester Cathedral waiting to be ordained. As we all know, time waits for no one, and already the sounds of Christmas carols are fading fast, the snorts and grunts of camels carrying wise men from the east are now passing out of ear shot, Jesus and his parents have escaped to Egypt, and in just a few weeks it will be Ash Wednesday and Lent will begin. Life moves on at a fantastic pace. At the year end, we often look back at where we have been. Then, as we think of 2012 we might try and see where we might be heading. Perhaps you have planned a holiday for the summer already, but in reality, we cannot see exactly where we are going. Life is a journey, and it‟s quite a twisty road, that rises and falls, and it provides only fleeting glances of what might be ahead. So, as we traverse from 2011 into 2012, why not take a break in your journey, and take time to reflect on where you have been, and where you might need to go. Do you need to sift through your pressures, stresses, and temptations, and take a new bearing for your journey through life? We‟re all invited to journey with God. He is the perfect guide, but often we prefer to take the scenic route! His path is, I believe, the perfect route, but we do like to wander! Nevertheless, he will meet us where we are, and once again lead us, as Psalm 23 says, on „paths of righteousness‟, through the challenging times, and though the wonderful times. So, another verse to finish. As I travel through the bad and good, keep me travelling the way I should. Where I see no way to go, you’ll be telling me the way, I know. I wish you a peaceful and happy new year

WINTER DRIVING „A Happy New Year to all our readers.‟ Driving in adverse winter conditions is more difficult if you and your car aren't properly prepared. By following these simple guidelines you will be safer and ready to deal with winter driving problems. Is your journey really necessary? If it is, plan it and give yourself plenty of time. Tell someone your intended route and how long you think it's going to take. Listen to the radio for details about road and weather conditions. Clean the windscreen and windows using a demisting preparation. Check that screen washers are not blocked and that the screen washer bottle is topped up and has a winter additive to stop it freezing. Check that the windscreen wipers are in good condition and work effectively. Ensure that all lights, brake lights, indicators are working properly and the lenses are clean. Ensure that the tyres are in good condition and are properly inflated. Carry the following in your vehicle:- Warning triangle. Hands free mobile phone. Warm coat. First aid kit. Good torch. Seat belt cutter. Fire extinguisher. Travel rug. Tow rope. Bottled drinking water. Recovery service contact number. Good map. Pen and paper. Adverse weather and road conditions bring an increased risk of skidding. A skid does not just happen it is almost always caused by the driver's actions. Keep your speed down and increase your safety gaps when the road is wet or icy. Braking, steering, acceleration, decelerating and gear changing must be done gently and gradually. If a skid occurs, no matter how strong the temptation, do not brake! Lose speed by gently easing the pressure on the accelerator pedal and, if appropriate, de-clutch.

Safe Driving.

If you are interested in the courses that we offer, you‟ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 01302 886 276
