Editor’s Letter

Anyone for a mince pie? Or are you all full up? I hope Christmas Day went without a hitch! However, according to all the big Supermarkets Christmas ads this year, that’s almost an impossibility! I was late to learn this new trick but I have banked it for next year, book your online shopping slot well in advance by ordering a minimum order then amend before the delivery date! I feel liberated, no more rushing through those packed aisles for me. Auckley Christmas fayre was as busy as ever with lots of local people braving the cold to browse for some last minute Christmas shopping. Kilham Hall enjoyed their usual carol singing event and the Children from St Wilfrid’s Primary School led the way with beautiful singing of some old Christmas classics. The annual FAB parish Pantomime held at St Oswald's Church in Finningley was a runaway success and as funny and popular as ever. Well done to all the cast and organisers who worked extremely hard putting this pantomime together. What ever you have planned to celebrate New Year, I hope you have a good one, and all the very best wishes for 2013.

News, News, News, News, News, News... Carol Singing at Kilham Hall

Spar Auckley decided to celebrate a once in a century event 12/12/12 at 12:12 by holding a One Minute party in store! Children from Branton St Wilfrids Primary school provided a special treat at this years Branton with Parish Council Carol Singing event at Kilham Hall. Everyone joined in the Carol singing for the first part of the evening then enjoyed tea coffee and mince pies. Afterwards, the children sang some all time favourites to everyone ending with ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’. The children were applauded and every one commented on their wonderful singing. Kilham Hall Management committee organised a raffle with all funds raised going towards The Aurora centre and Firefly. Charities. Father Christmas made a special visit and handed out sweets to all the children for their excellent singing!

Ammo and Sharan Bhdaal said they wanted to do something special for this unique date and time. “It only ever comes around once a century and as we wouldn’t be around when this particular date and time come around again, we decided that we would do something special to celebrate it” said Ammo. “We also raised money for the Auckley Friendly Society (Monday Club)’s Xmas dinner by holding a raffle draw and raised £229 toward their meal” added Sharan. However, both were very quick to point out all the help and support their team had provided. “All the team have been fantastic and helped sell raffle tickets at the counter and organise the event” said Ammo “Liz came with the initial idea and Laureen helped put the hampers together” added Sharan. As for their next party Ammo and Sharan will both be checking the calendar to see when there is a unique set of numbers again, but don’t be surprised if they have an impromptu one again very soon!

News, News, News, News, News, News... Auckley Christmas Market proved as popular as ever with many locals enjoying the festive spirit and spending their hard earned cash on some real delights. This year there was many different food stalls to tickle your taste buds, a Christmas lights stall with some lovely ideas to help you decorate your home and Father Christmas was in his Grotto awaiting the many children who I am told kept him busy with their endless lists! There was also the popular usual stalls offering sweets, rides, table decorations and woollies to keep you warm in the bitter cold. The Eagle and Child were rushed off their feet, but still managed to maintain their excellent service. Well done to all the organisers who brave the cold all day long to set up the market and to the committee members who plan this market all year round.

Auckley Parish Council - The owner of the Mosham Road quarry intends to submit a planning application for housing development on the quarry site and also the area of land lying between Mosham Road and Hurst Lane. In order to consult with the local community on these proposals the applicant is to arrange a letter drop to everyone early in 2013, and it’s important that residents respond to this consultation to make their views known. Residents who regularly have their drives blocked by inconsiderate motorists parking their vehicles across the entrance can apply to Doncaster Council for a white ‘I’ bar to be painted on the road outside the entrance to their drives to prevent this occurring. The Highways Officer to contact is lee.moses@doncaster.gov.uk

Finningley Village Spirit Of Christmas Event. Finningley Village Community Group would like to say a very big thank you to all those people who gave support, time and muscle power to the recent event. The continued support of the Parish Council, Women's Institute, Church and local schools made the evening very successful while the behind the scenes support and hard work of so may residents, too numerous to mention by name, made this community event a very enjoyable social evening and a fitting way to begin Finningleys Christmas Season. We would like to thank all those people who came along to the evening, supporting the event and making donations of £150.00 which will be used for future Community projects. Finally, we would like to remind everyone that the group would welcome new members interested in preserving and maintaining our beautiful village.

"Music Live at the Phoenix" first concert of the year will be on Saturday February 2nd at 7.45 pm. We have a return visit from Phil Cockerham who was very well received when we had the concert in the lounge in 2011. He will be joined as last time by Dave Bowie jr on Double Bass and a trio will be completed by new member Dickie "bongo" Dixon on percussion and harmonium. Their music can be succinctly described as Acoustic Folk, Blues and Imagination! The evening will be hosted by a Trio of Alan on Piano, Barrie on vocals and Jon on Trumpet and vocals. They will be performing a wide selection of songs chosen because they like them! For tickets priced £6 contact Barrie tel 01302 770992.

AVID (Awaken Village Interest in Dance) are holding their January Barn Dance in Blaxton village hall. The date is Wed Jan 9th at 8pm and the cost is just £1. Music is provided by "Live" Musicians and there is an opportunity to try one's hand at calling a dance or playing in the Band. Children are welcome free of charge. For more details ring Peter on 01427 873937.

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School This will be the final article I write for the Branton and Auckley Arrow, as I am leaving Branton St Wilfrid’s to take up a Headship position in another part of Doncaster after Christmas. Branton St Wilfrid’s is a very special school and I will miss the staff, children, parents and friends of the school. As I live locally I will look forward to reading the Arrow each month and catching up with all the exciting news and events. I hope you enjoy reading this article which contains news of our Christmas events. Best Wishes for the New Year, Carol Barnes, Acting Head teacher Christmas Fair Christmas is always a very exciting and magical place to be in a Primary School. During the week preceding the Christmas Fair we have Factory Week in school, and each classroom is a hive of activity as classes make gifts to sell at the Fair. This year products made included biscuits, magnets, key rings, coin boxes, sleighs and assorted jewellery items. The children then used their mathematical skills to work out costing and profit margins to help them decide selling prices. The Christmas Fair was opened by Father Christmas, who welcomed visitors to his grotto through the evening. In addition to class stalls there was a tombola, raffle, jewellery stall, badge making machine and the white elephant. The Fair raised £1,273, which is a magnificent amount. Over the year this money is used to buy in the exciting visitors for each class that you read about in the Arrow. The Christmas Fair is also a time when members of our local community join with us, and it was lovely to welcome visitors. Christmas Concerts For our Christmas Concerts this year the Infants performed “A Christmas Recipe” and the Juniors “The Late Wise Man.” The Infants production involved a cook preparing a mixture containing all the ingredients of Christmas. We met Christmas puddings, robins, presents, Father Christmas, snowflakes, Nativity characters and the vital ingredient, baby Jesus. The children sang many songs, accompanied by some wonderful percussion players. The Junior production centred around the main character Artiban who was trying to catch up with the other three Wise Men. Artiban kept being delayed because he stopped to help people in need. The message at the end of the play was that although Artiban missed seeing baby Jesus in the stable, he actually saw him everywhere through all the kind deeds he performed. The true message of Christmas was present in both plays.

Christmas Events Each year we sing at the Parish Council Carol Concert at Kilham Hall and the Children who attended warmed the hearts of their audience. At the time of writing our other Christmas events were still to come. Our Christmas parties are held in the final week of term and include playing traditional party games, such as pass the parcel and musical statues, and a party tea with jelly and ice cream to finish. The Christmas disco organised by the P.T.A. is always a popular event for the children. Finally the whole school community meets at St. Wilfrid’s Church on the final day to celebrate Mass.

Finningley C of E Primary School News St Oswald’s Christmas Well, our first Christmas as St Oswald’s academy was upon us and festivities went well..... The themes for this year’s decoration display have been ‘Winter Tales’. The children have had a fantastic time painting, sticking, cutting and scattering glitter in every knuck and cranny. The displays and decorations look superb and everyone who has been into school has commented on them. Christmas Fayre What a superb event Christmas fayre was! There was so much to see and buy to get that Christmas feeling going. All the children had made products to sell in their Christmas Enterprise week. We had tree decorations, CDs of the nativity, snowmen biscuits, mini holly wreaths, table decorations, Christmas cards, candles... the list goes on!.The cakes provided by parents were excellent and I know because I sampled most of them whilst serving on the stall! Glee Club and Street Dance. Parents and pupils enjoyed a fantastic afternoon performance on Wednesday 12th December form our talented dancers. Glee and street dance are two of our many after school clubs. They are run by dance teachers Shelley Higgins and Siobhan Fear and run every week on Monday and Wednesday. Children learn dancing, singing skills and general performance art skills. This half terms numbers were All I want For Christmas is You and Gangnam Style . Everyone agreed that the children were awesome. Sprout Challenge 2012 With the departure of the reigning ‘Eat a mountain of sprouts’ champion to Hayfield Academy excitement and gossip was rife in school as Christmas lunch day arrived. Nearly all our pupils, staff and a good group of governors came for the dinner and Mrs Robinson, the cook, did us proud. After all were fed the real competition began with Josh, Elli and Ebony from Year 6 joined by George from Year 5. They were presented with 300 sprouts and a fork each. ‘Sort of’ independent counters were appointed and the trial began. The early running was made by Elli with a good pace of sprout consumption. George realised he was in the big league and ducked out after the 35 mark. Rumours have it that Ebony had been training for this moment and she came through at a canter in the final stretch to win by eating 73, yes 73 sprouts. Congratulations go to all those who were brave enough to take part and sympathies to the Taylor family who will need the windows open tonight. Nativity 2012 Early years and Key stage 1 nativity was a ‘Wriggly’ one this year. The children performed on three separate occasions. The singing was beautiful, the voices were clear and the children who narrated were superbly brave, standing up in front of 150+ parents at each performance and bringing a tear to many eyes. I personally think the sheep stole the show but I am sure everyone had other special moments. The grandparents’ nativity afternoon was also attended by Mr Huw Thomas the Dioceses director of education and he told me it was simply wonderful. Christmas Church service Key stage two planned and delivered a wonderful Christmas service on Friday 21st December. The theme was ‘Preparing for Christmas’ and children looked at the message behind Christmas. Everyone had the chance to think about how this Christmas could be less about money and indulgence and more about considering others and going that extra mile for the ones we love. Year 3’s Advent prayers were particularly moving reminding us about how in everyday tasks we can think of, and pray for, others. Year 4’s Christmas Ready game was hilarious with the children definitely coming out on top.

Auckley School News

KS1 Christmas Nativity KS1 have performed a fantastic Nativity, Jesus’ Christmas Party. This year it was based on the Innkeeper who keeps getting woken up by visitors coming to see Jesus. The children all performed wonderfully and thoroughly enjoyed singing and acting. Foundation Nativity Our youngest children were superb in their nativity, ‘Not Such A Silent Night’, about noisy animals in the stable. They sang beautifully and looked wonderful dressed up in their costumes. Senior Citizens Tea Party The senior citizens from Auckley came to school for the annual Christmas get together. They enjoyed tea and cakes and were entertained with a performance of the KS1 Nativity which they thoroughly enjoyed. A good time was had by all.

KS 2 Pantomime

This year KS2 have performed the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk and the children were all amazing. Each class sang a song and a number of the children in years 5 and 6 took on the acting parts. They all had a great time and the parents enjoyed it immensely. We hope everyone had a very merry Christmas and all that remains is to wish everyone a very happy new year.

St Saviours, Auckley

St Oswald’s & Holy Trinity, Finningley

New Beginnings A New Year is upon us again and now we’ve cleared away all the wrapping paper, finally eaten the last of the left over turkey and exchanged all the gifts that didn’t quite fit we are left to contemplate what the next twelve months will bring. I’ll ask the dreaded question... Have you made any new year’s resolutions? I always get asked this and the answer is always a definite no. I used to make resolutions - things like eat more fruit, eat less chocolate or do more exercise but then one day I figured out why I never kept them. I’m not keen on fruit; I love chocolate and generally find most forms of exercise incredibly dull so why, WHY start a new year by making myself miserable? I’m not sure why we feel the need to put ourselves through this every year. So now I don’t even think about making new years resolutions in fact I tend to go to the other extreme. I actively seek out those things that will cheer me up in January when the days are short and it’s generally cold and overcast. I try to spend more time with friends, I listen to lots of music, I watch comedy films and make sure I finish off all the left over chocolate from Christmas. Monday 21st January 2013 is designated this year’s Blue Monday - the most statistically miserable day of the year when the population have definitely come down from the Christmas celebrations having had their credit card bills and realized how long it is until the next pay day or holiday. This began as a bit of a joke on an advertising campaign but apparently has some scientific basis. There are now websites and groups dedicated to combating the blues on this particular day. On Blue Monday we are encouraged to do something special for some one that we wouldn’t normally do as an act of love and friendship to them. Suggestions include taking cakes into work or popping round to see a neighbor you haven’t seen over Christmas. Other things include acts where the results would not be seen by the giver such as registering as an organ donor or joining a charity campaign. At Christmas the feeling of Christian love seems to be so strong that at times we can almost taste it in the air. The real challenge to us now is to continue to spread God’s love after the festivities are over. Spread a little love this January.
