Although we were off to a very cold start, what a relief it was to find some warmth in April! The Daffodils were in bloom and buds started to flourish at long last! You will notice in this month’s Arrow, news that there are plans to close the Children centre in Hayfield. This centre offers support and advice as well as an opportunity for parents and children to meet up on a regular basis. It would be a real shame for hayfield to lose this valuable service. Please offer your support if possible. The Auckley Show is warming up for its spectacular show this coming summer. The Arrow will update you on events between now and then. There is a notice to car boot sales people giving them prior notice of registering due to the number of cars turned away from last years show. If you are thinking of having a stall or being involved in any way, please contact the committee, details are in the Arrow. Once again, it’s lovely to see the articles from school and find out what our primary school children have been up to. If you run a group locally and would like to share something with the community, please let me know. This is just a short update to remind everyone that Auckley Show is set for Saturday 17th August 2013. The committee have been meeting on a regular basis to make plans to try and top last year’s great turn out. There have been a few subtle changes to the Exhibit’s Schedule which can be found on our web site www.auckleyshow.co.uk . The Arrow will publish this also in the July edition.
Meeting at 7.15pm on the 3rd Thursday of each month we always welcome visitors who want to see what the WI actually gets up to.
The children’s fancy dress has a theme this year – ‘Clown or Comedy Character’ we rely on mum’s dad’s auntie’s uncle’s gran parents to get the kids organised for this, here’s to a good turn out.

Tickets are now available for the evening event, this year we are trying something a little different - there will be a sixties band ‘The Presidents’ and suggesting ‘Sixties Dress’ is optional. The general buzz is this will prove to be a good idea with a chance to really have some fun and let your hair down. Will you arrive in ‘Flower Power’ ‘Mods’ , Rockers, Beatles there are some fantastic ideas going about. Doncaster Choral Society are performing "Hiawatha's Wedding Feast" (Words by H W Longfellow, music by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor) and also "Dona nobis pacem" (Music by Vaughan Williams) on Saturday May 11th at 7.30 pm in Priory Place Methodist Church. These two pieces are very accessible and would be an ideal introduction to "Live " choral music. (School pupils can attend without charge). Hayfield Lane Primary School News
Red Nose Day At Hayfield Lane, we can never let this day go by without raising money and at the same time having lots of fun. This year was no exception. The theme ‘Do something funny for money’ had the children making a donation to come to school in their fancy dress costumes. We even had our very own ‘Hayfield Lane’s Got Talent’. We held auditions in the morning and put acts through to a show in the afternoon where parents and carers came to enjoy the fun. Even the staff took their turn to join in by dressing up in coloured wigs and bright clothing and presented a fun musical performance. The most important part of the day was to raise money and as a school, we are very proud to say that we raised £426.35. A big thank you goes out to everyone for their support.

Auckley Church visit Our Hawk class visited Auckley church as part of their RE studies. In class, the children wrote down questions that they would like to find out the answers to while they were visiting the church. Whilst at the church Reverend Neil showed them around and they had a sheet with artefacts on to help them identify objects in and around the church. At the end, Reverend Neil answered the children’s questions. The children came back to school with interesting information to help them with their work. Eagle class at Crucial Crew Our Eagles class went to the Lifewise Centre at Rotherham to take part in the Crucial Crew experience. Crucial Crew is a lifelike scenario-based learning experience delivered to year six pupils from schools across South Yorkshire. Specialist officers and representatives from other agencies deliver these scenarios designed to provide young people with the knowledge and skills to make informed choices in everyday life in order to stay safe and away from criminal activity. Our pupils participated in situations, which included; Road safety, Internet Safety and Cyber bullying, Bus Safety, Arson, Drug and Alcohol Awareness and they even took part in a Youth Court scenario. Easter Egg Competition At the end of last term, we had an Easter Eggtravanza! As we do every year just before Easter we held a decorated egg competition but this year the standard and variety of decorated eggs was exceptional. We had One Direction, Toy story, penguin eggs and even a Vulcan egg to name a few. It was a very difficult task to judge a winner from each class. The winners each received an Easter egg provided by our Friends of Hayfield Lane. We would like to say well done to everyone that took part

WEEK 12 – 18 MAY 2013 We will be delivering envelopes for the Christian Aid Collection in Auckley, Blaxton and Finningley during Christian Aid Week. Last year we collected £1811.80, a very welcome amount which goes towards relieving the poverty of some of the poorest people in the world. Christian Aid helps the world’s poorest people to have enough food for today and tomorrow by helping them to be able to farm their land and improve their crop yields. They help people to set up small businesses to become self-sufficient. They help those affected by conflict and uprising to find work and those displaced by war, such as those who have fled Syria who have lost everything, by giving them the basics to live, by counselling adults and helping traumatised children. They also help to improve education and provide medical supplies and training. Times are tough for all of us at the moment but few of us will go to bed hungry or watch our children suffer and even die from malaria or illnesses caused by dirty water!

St Oswald’s Easter Cra Day
St Oswald’s church in Finningley held it’s annual Easter Craft Day on Good Friday in celebration of Jesus Life. There were 25 children of school age who attended this free event, funded by the church. The children had lots of fun making Easter cards and things to decorate church, as well as planting sunflower seeds to represent new life and one of the old favourites... decorating biscuits that were eaten well before they had chance to take them home! The children listened to the Easter story which was displayed in the Church Yard. The next craft day will be Glitter Day in December. All children of primary school age are welcome and the event is usually a couple of hours. Check the Arrow for further details in November. Branton St Wilfrid’s School News Mayflower Animal Sanctuary visit to Class R On 15th March a selection of animals from the Mayflower Sanctuary came to school to visit the children in Class R. The children were delighted to meet a puppy, cat and two guinea pigs and to learn about how to care for the animals. Everyone enjoyed a stroke of the pets who were very well behaved whilst they were in school. School Council visit to The Mansion House Miss Brown was very pleased to arrange for our newly elected School Council to visit The Mansion House in Doncaster. On 19th March an excited group of children set off with packed lunches for the day. Fortunately it was a quiet day at The Mansion House and so they enjoyed a very detailed guided tour and gathered a lot of information about how the council is organised and carries out work. The children asked interesting questions and had a great time.

Arts Week Presentation On 22nd March we welcomed parents into school for our Arts Week presentation to show off our work linked to the theme of art from other cultures around the world. Parents and friends were taken on a whistle stop tour around the world with lots of examples of art work and some interesting songs from other cultures. We were really pleased so many parents were able to join us for this celebration. Thank you to our PTA who provided ÂŁ1000 funding to bring outside providers into school! Easter Prayer Journey Our sincere thanks go to several members of the school governing body and Linda Gardner from the Scripture Union who led the stages of the Easter Prayer Journey on 27th March. All classes were taken on a tour around the school to each station which addresed the different aspects of the Easter story. Children were able to reflect on the meanings behind each Easter event, Palm Sunday, The Last Supper, The Garden of Gethsemane, Good Friday and Easter Sunday
PTA Easter Egg Hunt To end the term all children took part in the PTA egg hunt and enjoyed eating their chocolate- thank you PTA!
News From Auckley School News Visit To Toothills Farm Year 2 have visited Toothills farm as part of their topic about Katie Morag. They went to see the lambs being born and to find out all about farms. The farmer, Russell Toothill talked about sheep and the lambing season. When they arrived, they were lucky enough to see a lamb that had just been born. Everyone enjoyed the visit and thought the lambs were lovely. A very big thank you to Russell Toothill for allowing us to visit. Katie Morag Day Year 2 have had a day dressing up as characters from Katie Morag stories. The whole day was spent doing activities linked to the stories. The children made clay pots, like the lady artist makes in her studio to sell as souvenirs to tourists. They also worked together in teams, used paper spills, to design and make a bridge to cross the small river on the island. The final activity was to cook shortbread which was eaten in the afternoon when they had a Scottish food party where they tasted porridge, scotch broth and drank Irn-bru. We all had a wonderful time doing country dancing to finish the afternoon off.

Creativity in Year 4 Year 4 created these brilliant pictures after they were inspired by Swiss artist Paul Klee’s fantastic painting of the Castle and Sun. Castle and Sun is an innovative painting with stylish images which are created out of different geometric shapes and various shades of colour. The lone sun shines in the ingeniously designed sky created by strong lines and structure with various rectangular sizes that add depth to the abstract image. The children were inspired by Paul Klee’s fantastic painting and they used this inspiration to go on to create their own abstract pictures of Hampton Court after studying the Tudors. Before the children created these brightly coloured pictures, they began by discussing the shapes that they could see when looking at the palace. They then worked in pairs to break down the image and discuss the shapes that they could see. After that the children began by penciling the outline of Hampton court which was actually rather tricky. Once the outline was complete the children drew and cut out various shapes using brightly coloured paper. They then pieced the shapes together, almost like a jigsaw, before sticking the shapes down, sometimes overlapping them to form their unique abstract pictures of the famous, grand building.
Local Children’s Centre Faces Closure The Thorne Valley Children’s Centre is currently situated on the campus of Hayfield Lane Primary School in Auckley and was established under the Labour government’s Sure Start initiative. Sure Start was designed to provide a more consistent child care provision for pre-school children across the country concentrating particularly on areas which were seen as having the fewest resources locally. The centre provides an important meeting point for parents close to home and also has links to local health and welfare providers. Sadly as part of the latest round of government cuts this centre is threatened with closure, which will mean the loss of valuable local, affordable childcare for many parents as well as taking away the opportunity for children to interact with one another and to learn and play together. There has been an action group set up to campaign against the closure, which has gained the support of MP Stephen Twigg and Ros Jones. It is hoped that by rallying the support of the service users and the local residents that dialogue with the local government can be maintained and closure prevented. Sue vows to make a difference in Doncaster Determined & motivated to tackle her weight problem to enable her to walk down the aisle feeling confident & happy, local lady Sue Hildersley has seen such success with weight loss group Slimming World, that not only will she look amazing as she says “I do” she has shaped herself a new career as a consultant.
Before
Sue 48, made the decision to lose weight following a surprise proposal last July & has lost 2st 10lbs so far on her journey to become a beautiful bride. It’s second time around for Sue & her fiancé Richard, who joined with her & has lost 2 stone to become a target member.
“ I knew when Richard proposed that I wanted to lose weight before we started planning the wedding. Being overweight zaps your confidence & I hated having my photo taken so there is no way I wanted to be the centre of attention while I was uncomfortable with the way I looked. Richard is very supportive & agreed to come with me for moral support. It made the decision to go much easier & because the plan is so family friendly it’s easy to follow & really no one need know that you’re “on a diet”. It’s just a healthy way to eat. No food is banned it’s all about choices & balance. We both love it. The group was so welcoming, there really was no need to have worried, everyone was very encouraging and we’ve made some great friends. It’s lovely for me to be taking over the group I’ve lost weight with & I hope I can help many more people to be who they want to be, confident, healthy & happy. “

Aled Jones versus the Myth Busters I saw Songs of Praise this week for the first time in years but it seemed to have changed so little that I may well have been watching a repeat from 1979. I know the Bible message hasn't changed. God's love is the same today as always but SURELY church has changed in the past thirty years. I've compiled 10 myths about church that the media seem to want to uphold as reality. 1. 2.

You don't have to dress in your best clothes to come to church. If the fashion police have ever raided a church I am unaware of it. Socks and sandals are neither encouraged nor shunned. You won't be expected to know all the words. We have service booklets to guide you through the service and if you don't want to join in then no one will be upset. People also won't mind if you stand up or sit down at the 'wrong place' either in fact they may assume you're starting a Mexican Wave and join in. You don't have to be able to sing to come to church. Trust me. The songs we sing are not all about sin and death, and they weren't all written by people who are long dead. We sing some traditional hymns but must churches now have quite a broad range of musical influences. Aled Jones probably won't be there. Neither will Diane Louise Jordan or Pam Rhodes. You don't have to be quiet all the time in church. Church is a great place for friendship and fellowship as well as worship. After the service you will be offered a cup of tea or coffee. This is not compulsory. (Our biscuits are very nice though). You will not be expected to contribute financially. The vicar will not resemble the vicar from Dad's Army or Father Ted. We cannot promise that there's not some similarity to Rev or The Vicar of Dibley however. The Christian message is overwhelmingly one of love and acceptance and not of judgment, fire and brimstone.
I know the church has been slow to change but having seen the State Opening of Parliament and the fuss made about BBC TV Centre closing recently I'm not so sure we're that much slower than other institutions. Perhaps I’m being unfair to Songs of Praise but I do feel it’s an easy option for the media as a whole to represent Christians through stereotypes that are long since worn out.
