Finningley Community GroupAllotments. At the open session of the Parish council meeting held on the 17th of April the Community Group put forward a presentation regarding the proposal for Allotments off St Oswald's Drive. The Parish Council, although unable to make a decision regarding the additional land they were seeking to use because they were still awaiting a decision from the Airport Authorities, passed a decision to move forward with a scheme for allotments on the Parish owned land. The decision now clears the way for in depth discussions and planning regarding such matters as soil testing, access to water and the funding implications related to the venture.

Hayfield’s Olympic Efforts Rewarded
Students at The Hayfield School were rewarded last month for their efforts in a variety of Olympicthemed activities by a visit from the official Olympic Mascot, Wenlock. On a wonderful, sunny day Wenlock joined students taking part in a variety of sports events and posed for numerous photographs. In the evening Wenlock attended the PE Faculty’s Sports Presentation at The Keepmoat Stadium to help celebrate students’ sporting achievements. The school won the title of Get Set Olympic School of the Month in February after blogging about all the Olympic-themed and sporting activities they had been running, both in the classroom and at local primary schools. As well as Wenlock’s visit, Lord Sebastian Coe has written a letter praising the school’s work in promoting the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

News from Auckley School
Year 2 Visit to Finningley Church Year 2 children have been to look around Finningley church as part of R.E. lessons. They were given a very interesting talk from the Reverend Neil who explained all about the church as a place of worship. The children asked lots of questions they had thought about before the visit. After the talk there was the exciting part of drawing various parts of the church, making wax rubbings and ringing the bells. Now you will know why on one Thursday afternoon the church bells were ringing for no apparent reason! A great and interesting time was had by all!
Castleton Trip Year 5 have been to Castleton (in the Peak District National Park) to contrast Castleton with Auckley. We stayed at the brand new youth hostel Losehill Hall. The hostel was beautifully decorated and we each had en-suite rooms. While there we went to Treak Cliffe Cavern to see where Blue John is found. Blue John is a special rock and the only place in the world where it is found is in Castleton. We found out that 300 million years ago Castleton used to be under a tropical sea and that is why there are fossils found in the limestone that is there. We enjoyed our trip and learnt a lot. Visit Toothills Farm Year 2 have visited Toothills farm as part of their topic about Katie Morag. They went to see the lambs being born and to find out all about farms. The farmer, Russell Toothill, talked about sheep and the lambing season. When they arrived, they were lucky enough to see a lamb that had been born 5 minutes earlier. Everyone enjoyed the visit and thought the lambs were lovely. A very big thank you to Russell Toothill for allowing us to visit.

Visit from the Civic Mayor Doncaster’s Civic Mayor, Councillor Eva Hughes, has visited school. She was given a tour by our Year 6 School Councillors and then she lead an assembly for the whole school where she talked about her job and let the children ask questions. It was very interesting to find out what she does and the children learnt a lot. Aboriginal Shelters Year 6 are currently learning all about Australia. A particular focus is on the first Australians (Aboriginals). So far the children have enjoyed learning about whom these people are and how they live off nature. During one of our creative days, the children found out that Aboriginals build their own shelters using natural resources from ‘The bush’ therefore it seemed only too obvious to have a go ourselves. The shelters that the children created in our woodland area were incredible! Visit From Police Helicopter Our topic in the Foundation Stage has been ‘Science Explorers’ and for one week we were focusing on air and air transport. We were lucky enough to get a visit from the Yorkshire Police Helicopter. It flew into our school field and hovered over the field doing a 360 degree turn. The whole school came out to have a look at the helicopter it was an experience we won’t forget in a hurry. Foundation Visit to Yorkshire Wildlife Park The children in Reception took a trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park. It was our first ever school trip. We have a brilliant day as the sun was shining down on us as we looked at all the animals and had our lunch outside. We got to see the Lemurs being fed and had a talk about the Squirrel Monkeys and Giant Rodents. We saw the lions and the tigers and even got time to go to the park. A brilliant day was had by all and we would like to thank Yorkshire Wildlife Park for having us.

I'm part of a group of 8 Hayfield sixth form girls who are currently leading a fundraising campaign. Our fundraising efforts are to gain the opportunity to complete our Duke of Edinburgh Gold award over in Morocco, as well as volunteering in a community project. We have been working towards our Gold award for 3 years now. In Morocco not only will we complete our DofE Gold but we will also have the chance to contribute to the vulnerable communities in Morocco. Outlook expeditions have offered us this chance to decide how we want to help the communities, for example, building projects, assisting children in their education and much more. We need to raise ÂŁ12,000 to enable us this opportunity. We're all passionate, driven and ambitious girls who always welcome a challenge, and this is our biggest yet, we're very determined to meet our targets and And they need your help! we're very excited to complete our goals. We all currently play active roles in our community in many different ways and we wish to continue our community work overseas in Morocco.
Going for Gold
Our group consists of Josephine Wright, Emily Holgate, Heather Elkington, Emily Pratt, Olivia Bennett, Jessica donk, Hannah Beaumont and myself, Hanna Eckersall. Every single one of us are keen to support the issues at the heart of our own communities and we all play our part to help our communities. Josephine Wright and Jessica Donk, and I are all involved in the Community Sports Leaders program and have been for 3 years. We all volunteer and support local sporting activities every week, we run a variety of fun and pulse raising clubs which keep the children active and involved in sporting after school activities. Emily Holgate has volunteered at the Mayflower dog sanctuary and the Arthritis research charity shop in Doncaster town centre, both of these local charities are always looking for dedicated volunteers and Emily played an active role in supporting these important causes. Heather Elkington, Emily Pratt, Hannah Beaumont and Olivia Bennett all devote their time to CADs, which is the Children abled and disabled sport group, in Rossington. At CADs the girls give become friends and company to the children, they give their companionship and partake in the sporting activities, and without the help of volunteers the children may otherwise not be able to participate due to their disabilities. We want to further our community spirit over in Morocco, we want to leave some legacy and know that we have had a positive impact on the community in Morocco, just like we have here. This opportunity means a lot to us, we not only will be able to complete our final steps of our DofE Gold award but alongside this we will be able to contribute to the community and make a difference. Hanna Eckersall and the troop!

Easter news From Finningley C of E Primary School
Easter Garden Activity In preparation for Easter, Key Stage 1 pupils were involved in making a series of Easter gardens in seed trays, under the guidance of Mrs Shekle, our R.E. Coordinator. Parents, or grandparents, were invited to come in to school to help create the miniature gardens and all the children who had made one were able to take it home with them to nurture over the Easter holiday. Easter is a very special time for Christians but it is not an easy subject to understand, especially for little ones. This process provided a focus for sharing in discussions about the Easter story and encouraged the involvement of family members. Some older pupils also got involved to help the younger ones create their little gardens. The children managed to produce some beautiful, unique gardens, and their creations revealed that there are some very” green fingered” pupils in school and some budding gardeners in the making! Making the gardens provided an opportunity for the children to think and talk about the Easter story, and some of those in Year 2 were able to write and share some of their thoughts and observations with us :Cerys writes–“My Easter garden is important because it’s got a cross on it, and the tomb too, so that we can remember Jesus. There was something else that was important. It was lavender. I chose lavender because before Jesus died he saw beauty in everyone, even if they’re old ! “ Mathew R writes–“My garden represents when Jesus was put in the tomb. This is Lent and we are getting ready for that special time.” George writes– “I did a cross that led to a cave with sparkles to show that Jesus did not die.” Luke writes-“The reason we did this is because it’s a special season for churches and it’s when Jesus died. Amy writes –“The important thing about mine is that the tomb is open and people are looking in!” Piers writes-“My favourite part of the Easter garden was making the hill with my mum”. Keira writes-“The reason that we do Easter gardens is because it’s how we understand the Easter story and we have fun.” These last two thoughts say it all – making the gardens was a task that could be shared with loved ones, it helped to increase understanding about the meaning of Easter, and it was a chance to have a bit of fun!

Gardening and growing things is something that everyone in school is encouraged to do. Altogether there are 8 allotments within the school grounds so that each class can have one of its own. In addition, there is one for the staff and also one for the Gardening Club. Everyone in school gets a chance to help and see things grow from little seedlings right through to picking the crops at the end of the growing season. Class 4 has been very keen on growing rhubarb and Mrs Middlebrook’s bottled beetroot was very popular indeed, and helped to raise funds to support the children’s party. The sale of produce helps towards the purchase of news seeds etc and also helps to fund a range of ventures from which the children can benefit. The Gardening Club, which is one of the wide variety of After- School Clubs which are available for pupils to join, meets after school on Mondays for those children who particularly enjoy getting to grips with nature and the soil! Led by Mrs Lindley, the Gardening Club is very busy preparing its plot as Spring gets underway, and it will be interesting to see what grows well over this coming season! There’s also a lot more going on after school too! Alongside the Gardening Club, there is a wide range of other After- School Clubs for pupils to join. These include topics such as Cheerleading, Football, Taekwondo, Golf, Puzzle/Word Searches, Film, Fun Gymnastics and the Glee Club - to name but a few! Each club runs on a six weekly cycle (1/2 termly) and this allows for topics and activities to change in accordance with the season and popularity. The maximum charge for an individual club session is £2.50 and any monies that are surplus, after costs, are ploughed back in to developing more resources to enhance the clubs still further. The clubs usually run from 3.30 – 4.30 pm although there is an Extended Club from 4.30-5.00pm to assist parents with child care arrangements, for which a small fee is charged. Information about all the clubs is available from the school office and good ideas for new ones are always very welcome!

Drama Club Performance The Princess and the Pea.
After six months of hard work, Drama Club performed their play “The Princess and the Pea” to the whole school and parents. The story was based on the traditional tale, but with a twist. The Queen was determined to marry her son to a suitable princess, but unfortunately her choices included a princess under the spell of a fairy who had turned her into half mouse, half princess and a Hollywood princess with a shopping addiction!. The Queen then enlisted the help of the palace fairy, who auditioned another range of unsuitable candidates, before finding the perfect match for the Prince. However, the final test was the ‘pea’ test, where the chosen princess had to sleep on a bed with a pea beneath the mattresses and prove she could feel it in her sleep. Along the way we met the long suffering King, a
group of witty villagers and the palace servants, who all had their own thoughts about the suitability of the princesses and the determined Queen! The play was well acted by a large cast of characters and very much enjoyed by the audience.
On Tuesday 27th March Class R visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Although some of us have been before, it is very exciting going with school, because we see lots of different things with the Rangers. Jessica let us touch lizards, snakes and a newly laid ostrich egg. It was very big!! The lions were very noisy and showed us their enormous teeth! We had a great day and are looking forward to going back soon to visit the Amur leopards. Class R

Class R At YWP
Class 3 at NCM Museum Class 3 had a fantastic time at the National Coalmining Museum near Wakefield. We had been studying rocks and soils in our topic “Useful Earth, Angry Earth,” and there was a lot for us to see and learn about. All of the children had the chance to go underground in the ‘cage’ and find out what it was like to be a miner. They wore hard hats with lamps on and they all got suitably dirty. Above ground, the children met two pit ponies called Eric and Ernie and they found out how ponies were used in pits. Everyone brought home a piece of coal as a souvenir of their visit.

Jubilate at the Walsingham Children's Pilgrimage 2012
Jubilate in the Shrine Church 'Gold 4 God - Run the Race:Feel the Glory:Pass it ON!' Twenty-eight members of Jubilate, our worship group, recently spent three days in Walsingham, Norfolk on our annual visit to the Children's Pilgrimage. We joined with 200 other children to take part in singing, drama, crafts and a children's mass, in which several of our children did the readings, prayers or took part in the drama activity. We (nearly all!) walked the Holy Mile barefoot as pilgrims first did many years ago. Jubilate would like to thank Fr Stephen Gallagher, the Shrine Priest and Bishop Lindsay Urwin for organising this event and for letting us stay in the Milner Wing again! We all really enjoyed ourselves and were very proud of our children. Mrs Dilks Mrs Thompson Mrs Shephard
We hope you enjoyed reading about our varied activities this month. We will share more of our news in the next edition. Best Wishes, C.Barnes Acting Headteacher

News from Hayfield Lane Primary School Fairtrade Breakfast As part of Fairtrade Fortnight in March, the School Council organised a Fairtrade Breakfast. Everyone in school was asked to donate Fairtrade products, such as jams, cereals and fruit; we were amazed at how many products we received. The Co-op on Goodison Boulevard also supported us with a generous donation of a range of products. Each class attended the breakfast and families were invited to eat with their children. The School Council did a wonderful job serving the food and helping the younger children. Everyone had a wonderful time, while becoming more aware of the importance of Fairtrade. Spring has sprung! Gardening Club started again in March and we have already been busy preparing for the growing season. Our first job was to tidy up our allotment after the winter; we had a great surprise when we discovered the carrots we had left in the ground over winter were ready to eat. It was lovely to start the year with a harvest! So far, we have sown lettuce, radish, tomatoes, beans and sweetcorn, with much more to look forward to. This year, we are also entering the Vegetable Box competition at the Great Yorkshire Show. At the moment, the children are coming up with designs for the box, which will then be planted up. It is a big challenge, but if we are successful, our box could be displayed at the show in July. Sport Relief As always, at Hayfield Lane, we never let this day go by without taking part in this fantastic fund raising event and this year was no exception. Children gave a donation to come to school in their sportswear and to take part in running the Sport Relief mile. Children from Foundation stage up to year 6 took part in doing their bit by running, jogging or even walking around the school field, staff also took part. All the children were very proud of their achievements and helped raise £125.

France Residential On the sunny morning of 20th March 32 children and four excited members of staff left school for the year 5 and 6 residential visit to Hardelot in Northern France .We have led this successful visit for a few years now and the children always look forward to their week away. Whist there, we visited the cheese farm, chocolate factory, bakery, V2 Bunker and the Sea Life centre in Boulogne. We could not believe how lucky we were with the warm weather when on the first day we were on the beach at 9.30 in the morning and picnicking most days in the fantastically warm sunshine. The children’s behaviour throughout the trip was exemplary with many compliments from the locals and the staff was delighted with them, as they were a pleasant group of children to be with. A tired but happy group of children returned back to school after another successful visit to France.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Driving in the Countryside continued Dear readers, On a smooth, satisfying, traffic free drive in the country, it’s easy for even the experienced driver to go too fast. The simple rule you must always apply: can you stop within the distance you can see to be clear ahead? Always be prepared for the worst-case scenario, whether that’s horse riders, cyclists, oncoming vehicles overtaking a slow-moving tractor and trailer, a broken- down vehicle or even a farmer with his herd of cows. Rural road surfaces can hold any number of surprises for the unobservant and unwary driver. Loose gravel, mud, wet leaves, potholes, raised drain covers, deep puddles, extreme cambers, slippery road surfaces, fallen tree branches, debris from farm machinery. Good drivers on the other hand, are always ready to encounter hazards around the next bend and alter their speed and line accordingly. Always remain a safe stopping distance behind other vehicles, If someone is driving too close behind you, allow extra distance from the vehicle in front of you, as this will give you a longer braking time. Allowing this extra time will keep you safer, your brake lights will indicate that you are slowing and this will give the driver behind you the extra time to react to the situation. If you are following a large van or lorry, drop back a little to gain a better view around them. The invitation in last months Arrow Magazine for our readers to have a Free Public Assessment Drive had an excellent response. We would like to keep this offer open to anyone who may have missed the opportunity of having a Free One Hour drive with our Observers, contact details below. Just think a free chance to improve your driving skills, it may just save a life! This offer is only available in the Arrow Magazines. If you are interested in the courses we offer, you’ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk Or Tel: Doncaster 01302 886 276 Safe Driving Paul Tuke. Wind Burn There are some publications called ‘Lonely Planet Guides’, which generally give travellers information on the country, region, or city they are visiting. Someone said to me the other day that they had noticed that my articles often include holiday stories, and so perhaps I should produce ‘The Rambling Rector’s Guide.’ So here we are then, the Rambling Rectors Guide to Wind, Rain and Cliff Tops. We’ve just returned from a few days in the very southern most point of Northumberland, or if you walked to the next field, the most northern part of Newcastle. We love the North East and the people (I have to say that given the editor is from that part of the world) and so we decided to stay on a lovely touring caravan site just north of Whitley Bay. We chose a pitch that was just a few feet from the cliff edge overlooking St Mary’s Lighthouse. We could see the sea birds soaring, the sun rising, and the soft sound of the ocean below sang us a lullaby in the evening... Until the third day that is. The sky turned an ominous dark grey, storms could be seen out at sea, the ocean became a roaring tempest, rain and hail came in horizontally, and the wind howled across the site challenging anything in its way. Given the freezing temperature I suspect it came direct from Scandinavia! Thus when people have asked me this last week, ‘Did you have a good holiday’, the reply has been, ‘Yes, but not so much sun burn as wind burn and rust!’ But what has all this got to do with things spiritual? Well, when the wind struck the caravan shook quite violently and we lay awake wondering just how close to the cliff edge we were! We need not worry though as we were on a hard standing with a good foundation. However, at 2.00am others were out trying to secure awnings that were literally blowing in the wind. They hadn’t been pegged down properly and they were now in tatters, with ripped canvas with steel poles bent into pieces of modern art. So the Rambling Rectors Guide would perhaps say, “As we go through life there can be times when we simply deal with things superficially, the sun is out, and everything is rosy. However, when the storms hit, things can start to bend out of shape. The Bible tells us to build on solid rock – that bedrock being Jesus Christ himself. It might take a little effort on our part, but the foundations are stronger, and much better than building on the shifting sands of life.”
Blessings
