My Father’s War My Father was born on 28th November 1896 at the Cross Keys Public House in Turnditch, Derbyshire where his father was landlord. Pte 4309 Joseph Laurence Abell enlisted in the 1/5th battalion of the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) on the 12th April 1915. He was to have joined up with his best friend Harold, but Harold had an appointment at the dentist so my father joined alone.

Over the past 30 plus years donations for the poppy Appeal have increased from a few hundred pounds in two villages to nearly four thousand pounds from four villages. The Community Fundraiser for South & West Yorkshire is very concerned that the hard work done by Poppy Appeal Organisers to grow the income isn’t lost when they retire as it would be a disaster to lose this legacy. Therefore we have been asked if possible to train a deputy so i am asking for a volunteer or volunteers to contact me to find out how the sale of poppies is organised. I hope there may be ex-service personal who would be interested or someone who had a family member like me who received help from the RBL. Please contact me on 01302 770583 or e-mail me at c.adamson581@btinternet.com Chris Adamson

He landed in France on 9th October 1915, and we know he was in the trenches with an amusing if not worrying incident where he describes putting his head above the parapet and being shot at by a German sniper. He says in his letter that the German did not get another chance ‘because I didn’t look again. He was wounded on the first day of the Somme offensive (1st July 1916) during the attack on Gommecourt. He received a bullet wound to the shoulder which shattered the socket and a shrapnel wound to the chest. He was unconscious for sometime but as he came round he heard Skylarks singing and ‘wondered if he was in heaven’! He spent a considerable time convalescing at a hospital in Bethnal Green, London following this incident, and the wound was so serious that he did not return to active service. He was subsequently discharged from the army on 6th December 1916. During the rest of his life he could not lift his arm above his shoulder although we went on to work at Rolls Royce and kept his family in home grown vegetable. He was a member of Darley Abbey British Legion, was in the A.R.P. During the 2nd world war and sold poppies door to door each year.

Year 4 Visit to Cusworth Hall Y4 spent the day at Cusworth Hall to learn 1st hand what life was like for Victorian people, especially the children. The purpose of the visit was to bring to life Y4’s Autumn term topic, highlighting the daily life that poor Victorian children had to endure and hopefully teach them to appreciate their own lives by comparison.

Fine Dining With Laurent Berges Laurent Berges has been a local resident (Auckley) since 2002. Originally from France, Laurent is currently Head of a large Hospitality and Tourism College in West Yorkshire. He is classically trained in French Cuisine and graduated from the Ecole Hoteliere de Toulouse, France. Having worked in several high profile restaurants

and hotels in France (some with a prestigious Michelin Star), he moved to the UK in 1996 to continue his studies before starting a career in Further and Higher Education. He is promoting fine dining recipes to our readers and hopes that local residents will try them out and enjoy them!

One of France much loved classic desserts is the Fondant au Chocolat. If baked perfectly, it offers a melt in the mouth sensation that is second to none. French chefs are keen to offer this dessert in many award winning restaurants; I remember a terrific one in Castres, in the South of France a few years ago. Gordon Ramsay often offers it in his three Michelin Stars restaurant in Chelsea. If you are a chocoholic, try this! The idea of the fondant is that your dish will have a soft crust on the outside, whilst the centre will be hot, soft and creamy.

Ingredients to serve 4:

1 organic egg 1 organic egg yolk 60gr caster sugar 50gr of organic 70% cocoa chocolate 4 tbsp of cocoa powder for dusting/decorating 50gr unsalted butter 1 tbsp of butter to grease 50g of sifted plain flour 2 tbsp of Chocolate liquor (or Baileys / Tia Maria / etc) 2 tbsp of icing sugar for dusting/decorating 4 large tbsp of organic, best crème fraiche

Recipe:

  

Preheat oven to 160C

 

Run a finger around the inside top of the ramekin and remove any excess butter and cocoa.

Whisk the whole egg, yolk and sugar until you obtain a pale and thickish mixture. Fold in the cooled chocolate mixture. Fold in the liquor, and then fold in the flour

    

Fill the four ramekins evenly with the fondant mixture

Grease/butter four standard size ramekins

Fondant au Chocolat

Dust the inside of the ramekins with cocoa. Shake out excess. Make sure that the dusting is even, from top to bottom. Cut the chocolate in pieces. Cut the butter in small cubes. Melt the chocolate and butter in a small bowl set over a pan of hot water (ensure that the water never gets into contact with your mixture, it would ruin it), then take off the heat and stir until very smooth and silky. Leave to cool.

Put on a baking tray and bake in your pre-heated oven for 12 minutes. After 12 minutes, remove from the oven and leave to cool for 2 minutes Run a blade around the ramekin to loosen up the fondant, without breaking the soft crust. Turn the chocolate fondants out on to large serving plates. Dust them with a mix and icing sugar and cocoa powder.

Serve with a dollop of best crème fraiche. Presentation is essential so arrange your plate so that the fondant is on one half on the plate, with dusting on top and around, and the crème fraiche should be carefully spooned on the other half. Notes: Make sure that you do not overcook your fondant. You would end up with a heavy muffin-like product. Nice and eatable, but nothing like what it should be.

Branton & Cantley Cricket Club Des Binns of Bessacarr has kindly sent yet more information about the club. Des tells me that records show that the club was started in 1912 and closed down in 1992. Which is quite surprising since I assumed it had closed down much earlier. Des tells me that after 2nd World War there was a meeting between his father Fred Binns and Mr Davis of Cantley Manor, who agreed to remove the tennis courts on the square of the old ground. Thus playing recommenced. In 1957 the club joined the Doncaster and District League and in 1968 the Club had to move to Cantley Park due to the Councils Housing Development Programme.

News from Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary School Careers Week We have had a very exciting Careers Week, with many visitors coming into school to talk to the children about their jobs. The visitors included a surgeon, hairdresser, nurse, police officer, teacher, children’s entertainer, RAF officer, fire fighter, paramedic, social worker, post lady, librarian, doctor, zoo keeper, dentist, magistrate, wildlife park education officer, avionics engineer, animal sanctuary staff and the managing director from Hull KR rugby club! The children have enjoyed learning about different jobs and have begun to think about what they might like to do in the future. Below are some examples of follow – up work.

Class R – Mark Oliver dressed as a fire fighter! Mr Bruce – An Orthopaedic Surgeon, by Alice Howlieson Class 4 On Monday Mr Bruce an orthopaedic surgeon came in to talk to us about bones. Mr Bruce brought in a skeleton and told us what the bones are called. Mr Bruce called the skeleton Sidney! Mr Bruce has been an orthopaedic surgeon for twenty years now. He showed us a girl that got run over by a police car. Mr Bruce showed us broken bones on X-rays. The X-rays were real. Did you know? You have 27 bones in your hands and 27 bones in your feet. Class 1 found out about the jobs in our school. They wrote thank you post cards to their helpers. Emre wrote to Mrs Fisher: - “Fanc you for helping us wiv awer fings, love Emre.” Careers Week Interviewing – by Katherine Witherden, Class 3 For my homework I interviewed my dad, Dave Witherden, about his career. He is a weather teacher at the Met Office. He does a full time job teaching pilots about the weather. He works with one other person and his favourite part of his job is meeting lots of people. He has even met Prince Harry! He really enjoys his job but the most difficult part is teaching students from other countries.

An extract from an interview with our Police Community Support Officer Maria Pratt by Rachel Burton, Class 6 What qualifications or experience do you need to be able to start training? – To start training you need a good standard of education, to be a good listener and to have no criminal record. How long did you have to study for to qualify to be a PCSO? – I had to study for 13 weeks and continually after that. What made you want to be a PCSO? – I wanted an interesting and rewarding job. What do you enjoy most about your job? – I enjoy meeting people from the community. Would you recommend your career to our generation? – Yes. It is well paid but very hard work.Mrs Williams – A Hairdresser by Jack Dunn, Class 2 Mrs Williams can do all kinds of hairstyles, such as plaits or ponytails. Mrs Williams uses all kinds of different things like hairdryers or scissors. Mrs Williams has a very big book that has lots and lots of hairstyles. Once the children have had their hair done and they have been good they are allowed a lollipop. Mr Shephard – Avionics Engineer, by Sam Sellars, Class 5 Mr Shephard works as a flight engineer. He went to university for 2 years. Then he went into the RAF for 23 years. Mr Shephard now teaches other people to fix aircraft. At the start of the week I wanted to work as a mechanic but now I am stuck between these two jobs. I found out that pilots just take off and computers do the rest. He showed is the biggest aircraft which carries the Russian space shuttle. The aircraft can carry 8 lorries and still have room for your family car. Every year the aircraft comes in for a complete checkout and it takes 31 days. I would like to be a flight engineer because I love planes. Visit by Bawtry Mayflower Animal Sanctuary Class R children had a lovely visit from the Bawtry Animal Sanctuary volunteers, along with a delightful dog, two kittens and a guinea pig! The children were very interested in the animals and the work of the volunteers. Class R children were pleased to present a cheque to the Animal Sanctuary, a very worthwhile local charity. Doncaster Advanced Motorists Beyond the test

Steering

Dear readers You should hold the steering wheel with your hands at the ‘quarter-to three’ or ten-to-two position. Steering movements should be made by feeding the wheel through your hands. You pass the wheel from one hand to the other at all times. It sounds complicated, but this is the smoothest, safest and most natural way to control the steering. If you are not used to steering in this way, your movements may at first feel they lack co-ordination. But it only takes practice to develop the technique into a fluid, controlled movement. Once perfected you will find it uncomfortable to steer in any other way. Driving with one hand on the wheel arises simply through laziness. This gives you poor control at all times, and puts you at a disadvantage if you need to react quickly. If, on a long drive, you find it tiring to keep both hands in the correct place, your driving position may need adjustment. There are many times, of course when one hand has to be taken off the wheel. Apart from changing gear, opening a window or operating switches are common occasions. Try to do these things when travelling in a straight line and in quiet traffic situations. Many people let go of the wheel completely for a brief moment. How can they react if they have to take avoiding action? A common mistake after a turn is to let the steering’s self-centring action spin the wheel straight. While doing this, a driver has no control at all. Some people hold the wheel with both hands close together at the top or the bottom. This is neither relaxing nor appropriate for good control. Your hands should be opposite each other to allow quick steering in ether direction. Crossing arms must be avoided control is sacrificed since crossing arms prevent more lock being added. Imagine you misjudge a corner and halfway through you find it tightening unexpectedly. If your arms are already crossed, you prevent yourself steering any further without a great deal of scrambling with the wheel. Initially the wheel is turned very gently, and then the rate of rotation is slightly speeded up once the car has settled into its cornering attitude. Applying this sensitivity means that the passengers hardly feel changes of direction. Power steering must be treated with respect because it is all too easy for sudden steering movements on a slippery road to cause the front wheels to break grip and start a skid. Artificial lightness should not be regarded as an indication that a car’s road holding is any better. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer you will be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel:020 8996 9600

St Oswald’s & Holy Trinity, Finningley

St Saviours, Auckley

Remembrance November is full of remembering. I don’t know if you’ve ever really thought about the word remember? But if dismembering is breaking apart, then remembering is putting back together. This month we will remember the millions of men, women and children, who have died in conflicts around the world. We will remember our loved ones, our friends, our comrades. We will remember the cost, not only in lives; but of homes destroyed, families forced apart, communities broken. We will remember days, months, and years, when time stood still, and conflict marched on. We will remember those lives lost, those places destroyed, those families forced apart, those communities shattered, those lost years of people lives – and we remember that we can never have them back!! It was hoped that after WWI the losses would stop, it was the war to end all wars….It was hoped even more that after WW2 the violence, fear, and dying would stop.... Surely the world had learned its lesson! We know today it didn’t. The Falklands, Iraq, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Bosnia, the almost ever festering Middle East, India & Pakistan, Vietnam, North & South Korea, The Cold War, terrorist attacks in America, Bali, Spain, London, and the fighting, the killing, and the losses continue as you read this. And that’s just in my 41 years of life! This month we remember, and it is right and proper that we do remember, however, I would like to ask a question: Is remembering enough? Or does our remembering need to lead to change, both personal and social? In church we pray every Sunday, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”. I say to that „Amen‟ which means ‘so be it, I agree’.

Blessings Revd. Neil Redeyoff St Saviour's, Auckley & St Oswald's & Holy Trinity, Finningley Jack, Hannah, Joseph, Neil and Catherine
