Editors Letter...

September certainly welcomed the early arrival of Autumn with cool windy mornings turning into warm windy days! I love this time of year with all the new colours outside however it would have been nice to have had one last month of ‘summer’. They say we are heading for a cold winter with snow again, if so we can expect snow by November if not earlier! Schools are all back and there have been some changes! Auckley Junior and Infant school is now an academy and called Auckley School, one of the first primary schools in Doncaster to become an academy. St Wilfrids primary school in Branton have provided a new garden for the children to grow their own food etc as well as a new climbing frame and den in receptions outside play area. School is so good these days they want to come home soon! Before we know it, it will be half term! Children in Doncaster break up on 21st October for one week, Kilham Hall in Branton, Maze Maize and Walkers Nurseries in Blaxton have plans for Halloween that will delight young children. All the details are in this month’s Arrow. The deadline for the November issue will be Wednesday 19th October. The November issue will be distributed from Friday 28th October.

Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom

News, News, News, News, News, News... Hayfield School’s 20k challenge

Dog fouling

The Hayfield School has always done a sponsored walk to help raise funds to support the students directly. Last year the money raised was used to improve the environment of the school. Over the years, due to a variety of factors, the walk had become progressively shorter with some students completing it within two hours. Last year the walk was changed.

Doncaster Council takes this problem very seriously, and is working hard to improve the cleanliness of the local area for everyone – including those responsible dog walkers that clear up after their dog.

In a return to the original spirit of the event, there was more challenge and our students were proud of their achievement on completing the walk. The walk is over 20 km and will involve the whole day being given over to this activity. The route has been carefully planned by Mr MacIntyre (with assistance from Mr Hand, our Health and Safety Officer) and comprises of two smaller routes each starting and ending at the school. One half of the walk will take place in the morning, students then return to school for lunch and complete the second half of the walk in the afternoon. As ever, our staff will marshal the route and will be available to provide assistance and encouragement to the students. All students have been given sponsor forms and we would be grateful if you could support them and the school.

Cantley with Branton WI Our August speaker was from the South Yorkshire operation unit. She spoke about the Police Helicopter and the interesting work they do. September 8th was our harvest supper which was for members only. November 10th we have a talk on Hypnotherapy, I hope the lady doesn’t put all our members to sleep! November 15th we are having a visit to Brigg Garden Centre. Visitors are welcome to the meetings. Please contact Anne Oakes 536802 for more details. On 15 September, Chocolatier, David Stone joins Finningley WI for a sensational demonstration of the art of handmade chocolates. Chocolates will be available to buy on the night. Finningley WI meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month in Finningley Village Hall. For further details call Jayne Sims, President on 01302 772539. Come along and meet the friends you don't know yet!

What should dog owners do? Responsible dog owners do not allow their dogs to foul public places. Ideally, dogs should be trained from an early age to 'go at home' in their own garden before or after a walk, rather than during. If dog fouling does occur away from home, the responsible owner will clean up after the dog. Any suitable plastic bag can be used, or special poopscoop bags can be purchased from pet shops, veterinary surgeries or stores. Dispose of faeces in a poop-scoop bin or take the bag home. If this is not possible, as a last resort, double wrap the faeces in two plastic bags and dispose of in a litter bin. How to Poop Scoop Simply place a bag over the dog mess and lift it whilst pulling the bag downwards. Or use two pieces of cardboard to "scoop the poop" and put it in the bag. Tie a knot in the bag and dispose of it in a poop-scoop bin or take it home for disposal. Your hands do not come into contact with the faeces. Failing to remove dog fouling immediately is a criminal offence. Any person caught committing this offence in Doncaster will receive a £50 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN), which could lead to a fine of up to £1000 in the Magistrates’ Court if the notice is unpaid. Persistent offenders will not be given the option of a £50 FPN, as the Council will pursue a prosecution in court for such behaviour. Please note, there are exemptions from the legislation for guide dogs and those people with mobility problems that do not allow them to be able to remove their dog’s faeces. Dog fouling is not only unpleasant and unsightly, but it also carries harmful bacteria.

To report dog fouling please contact Doncaster Council on 01302 736000.

Auckley Cyclists Complete the C2C Challenge In 15 hours!

John Grace and Keith Scott

Auckley cyclists John Grace and Keith Scott are celebrating an epic achievement of completing the 135 mile Sea to Sea cycle ride in 15 hours. The C2C starts at Whitehaven in the former coal mining and industrial lands of West Cumbria, travels through the stunning scenery of the northern Lake District and heads into Keswick before passing through Penrith and the Eden Valley with its lush valleys and sandstone villages. It then starts the climb up to Hartside and onto the unspoilt Northern Pennines – the roof of England. There then follows a challenging, hilly ride as the C2C meanders through old lead mining villages, such as Nenthead and Rookhope, and down into the Durham Dales before entering the old steel town of Consett. From here you ride through one of Britain’s old industrial heartlands to the North Sea and on to the finish at Sunderland. Most cyclists take the C2C on over 3 days as there is plenty to see and also a massive amount of climbing to be done between Penrith and Rookhope... to complete this in a day is a fantastic achievement, John and Keith had already done a 2 day crossing but had set their target on a 1 day crossing. With the support of Auckley based Bicycle Buddy, John and Keith achieved their goal and are planning their next challenge.

6

Bicycle Buddy Owner Chris Hickson said 'this is a fantastic achievement, one of which John and Keith should be very proud. I am immensely pleased that they asked me to prepare their bikes and support them on this very challenging ride’. Another Auckley resident has also be spending time in the saddle. Chris Harris has just returned from an inspirational journey that has taken him the length of the UK. Chris called me to service his bike before he set off an epic 2000 mile tour of the UK including doing the Lands End to John O Groats route in 10 days. Chris was very supportive of Bicycle Buddy and was very receptive to the advice I gave him on setting up his bike for this type of Tour. Having done long tours before Chris was concerned about the number of punctures he had had and wanted to avoid them if at all possible. I advised Chris on replacing his tyres and inner tubes with a very good quality puncture proof tyre and tube system ... so I fitted these for him ...and in 2000 miles not one puncture !! A fantastic inspirational achievement Chris well done ! Article by Chris Hickson of Bicycle Buddy For more details contact Chris on 07585 904818

Over the past 30 plus years donations for the poppy Appeal have increased from a few hundred pounds in two villages to nearly four thousand pounds from four villages. The Community Fundraiser for South & West Yorkshire is very concerned that the hard work done by Poppy Appeal Organisers to grow the income isn’t lost when they retire as it would be a disaster to lose this legacy. Therefore we have been asked if possible to train a deputy so i am asking for a volunteer or volunteers to contact me to find out how the sale of poppies is organised. I hope there may be ex-service personal who would be interested or someone who had a family member like me who received help from the RBL. AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2011 New Play Equipment A planning application on behalf of the Parish Council has been submitted to DMBC’s Planning Department in respect of a varied range of play equipment to be sited at Riverside Park. A decision will expected shortly and if planning permission is granted it is hoped to install the equipment before the winter.

Poppy Wreath The sum of £100 has been donated to the Royal British Legion This will provide a poppy wreath for Remembrance Sunday, with the remainder going to support the work of the Legion.

Meeting to Discuss Possible Provision of Bollards Members of Council have met with DMBC Officers to discuss the possibility of installing bollards on the wide area fronting the shops at Ellers Lane, Auckley. This measure has been discussed as a result of irresponsible drivers parking their vehicles on the frontage, thus creating a danger to pedestrians and other motorists.

Hedges Overhanging Footways During the summer months trees and hedges grow with great rapidity, and the Parish Council regularly receives complaints relating to overhanging branches obstructing footways. It would be appreciated if residents could please trim back any trees or hedges in their gardens which may be overhanging adjacent footways.

Auckley Show Once again the Auckley Show proved to be a great success and was well-supported. A tremendous amount of work goes into the planning and staging of this event and members of the Show Committee are to be congratulated for their sterling efforts on the day and also for organising the children’s fishing match and disco. Well done.

Flower Tubs The colourful display of flowers in containers around the village is admired and appreciated by residents and visitors to the village. Council extends its thanks to members of the Auckley Gardens and Allotments Association who give up their time to plant, water and maintain the plants. Grateful thanks are also due to School Lane residents for watering the plants on the triangular grassed area of Eastfield Lane.

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School

New School Garden We are now settled back at school and we look forward to another busy year in school, with many dates already in the diary for a wide variety of curriculum enhancement opportunities. Before the Summer holiday members of our School Council had several meetings to plan our new school garden. They discussed ideas with their class so that all the children could be involved. Ideas included: raised beds for classes each to have an area for growing, a trellis for climbing plants, a planted ‘sensory’ area with thought given to colour, scent, touch, sound (planted grasses etc.) and taste (different herbs). We are delighted with our new garden area, created by TJ Landscapes (tjlandscapes@gmail.com/01302 840919). We are very grateful for their advice as to how to turn our plans into reality, the high standard of the work undertaken and at a good price too. In the picture Class 6 are enjoying a sketching session and during the course of the school year all the children will have chance to undertake some gardening activities. JUBILATE at the Walsingham Youth Pilgrimage 2011 In August a large group of last year’s Jubilate children, along with Jubilate members from previous years, once again took part in the Walsingham Youth Pilgrimage, which was led by Father Stephen Gallagher and Bishop Lindsay Urwin. The theme for the five days was ‘1061 and All That’ – 1061 being the year the original Holy House was built 950 years ago this year. We camped and cooked as a group amongst 800 other young people from all over the country. We went to the ‘welcome disco’ on Monday night and on Tuesday night all 800 of us walked in the dark by candle light from the Catholic Shrine grounds to the Anglican Shrine grounds – this was very moving. Most of us walked barefoot as pilgrims have always done. On

Wednesday we took part in the all night Vigil and Prayer relay after we had shared in the Late Night Liturgy which again was incredibly moving, especially Anointing and Laying on of hands. Most of our group stayed in the Big Top Worship Marquee all through the night for this. We loved Wednesday afternoon and the craft activities and the climbing wall. Thank you to Father Stephen, Bishop Lindsay and the Ministry team for all you said to us and for joining in everything! Each year in August the older children from Jubilate take part in this 5 day residential event and the younger members of Jubilate take part in a similar event – the Children’s Pilgrimage – over a weekend in March. We get a lot out of this – we hope we gave something back. We would like to thank the Society of Mary for once again helping us out financially with mini-bus costs and everyone who helped us in any way. The dates for these events this school year are – Children’s Pilgrimage March 9th – 11th 2012 and Youth Pilgrimage July 30th – August 3rd 2012. For photographs see www.walsingham.org.uk and click on ‘photo gallery’ then ‘Youth Pilgrimage 2011.’ DIAL Day Doncaster’s Disability Advisory Service visited school to talk to the children about what it means to have a disability. Children learned that you can’t always tell just by looking at someone if they have a disability and that there are many aids that can support people with disabilities.

Children found out that it is not as easy as you might think to travel round in a wheelchair!

Children found out there are lots of disability aids that can help with everyday tasks like making a cup of tea. We look forward to sharing more of our school news next month. Best Wishes EA Crayton, Head teacher

News from Auckley School We hope you had a lovely summer and enjoyed the holidays. Academy Status Auckley Junior, Infant and Nursery School has changed its name! We are now simply Auckley School. The school name has changed due to its new status as an academy. The school achieved academy status from the 1st September and rumour has it we’re the first converter primary academy school in Doncaster. Converter academy status is only granted to schools deemed as good and outstanding so we are all very excited about our new status. New signs have been erected at the front of the school showing the school motto ‘Living, laughing, learning together.’ Holiday Club Auckley School Holiday Club had a fantastic time this summer!! Each week had a theme: Science, Sports & Olympics, Prehistoric, Make Me Famous, The Great Outdoors and Holidays. Our days out included, Magna, Bowling, Doncaster Museum, Cinema, Tropical World, and Clifton Park. A great time was had by all, and if you would like any information about our Club or the activities for October Half Term please contact the school on 01302 770701. Gardening Club Our gardening club returned to work this week to a bumper crop of vegetables from our school allotment. We have grown onions, carrots, lettuce, beetroot, courgettes and marrows. The children also enjoyed planting up the pots with winter pansies so the school can remain looking bright and colourful throughout the winter. A big thank you to everyone who has helped make the club a success.

26

Visiting Author We have kicked off our new year with a visit from the author E R Reilly. He came to one of our assemblies and talked about some of his books. He explained where he got his ideas, how he writes and read us extracts of his work. He tried to encourage us to try writing our own stories. He was very interesting and motivating.

Flowers for Someone Special I would like to nominate my mum Margaret for ‘someone special’ please. For the past 2 years, she has travelled over from Sheffield to come and look after my 2 children on her 2 days off from work, so that I can go to work. She stays with us overnight and does the school run and looks after my daughter throughout the day. She has become a 'local' now and has got to know lots of people in the village! I just wanted to say a huge thank you to my Mum for doing this and for continuing to do so, we wouldn't be able to do it without her. Nicky Gudgin The Arrow and Petalsflorist would love to send someone special a bouquet. Also, listen to Trax FM to hear ‘Someone Special’ in the morning!

Spuds! Judging by the number of spuds on the road near Higgins’ potato processing in Finningley it would appear that harvest is in full flow. Indeed, by the time this goes to print St Saviour’s Auckley will have celebrated harvest and Finningley church won’t be far behind.

St Saviours, Auckley

But you know, the interesting thing about harvest, is that people have become more and more keen on celebrating it the further they have got from being the ones who gather in the crops from the fields! The harvest festival is a festival which most people think goes back into the mists of time. We imagine joyful peasants accompanying horse drawn carts full of produce back into barns. We imagine the whole village coming together to celebrate that all has been safely gathered in. Think Larkrise to Candleford crossed with a Constable painting! And a lot of us, quite probably, think back to harvests that we knew as a child around our villages and fondly imagine that it was ever thus. Actually that’s not really true. The “all is safely gathered in” style of harvest festival is something that is pretty modern and goes back little further than the Victorians. In Scotland, if there ever was a traditional harvest, it was Lammas-time. The celebration of the first fruits of the harvest... at the start of August. The idea being, and this one does go back into the mists of time, that if you offer God the first bit of the harvest, God will be so pleased and delighted by the offer, that you get a bumper crop and get to keep the rest all to yourself. Good economics. Bad theology! So harvest is something of a muddle. Yet we still celebrate it, and it’s right that we do because we should be thankful. Being a thankful person is part of being whole, and I think that everyone has in them a sense of thankfulness. There is not a culture in the world which does not try to teach its children to be thankful people. To be thankful is to be human. So as you eat your chips, baked potato (healthy option), roast potato, crisps, mashed potatoes, potato salad, creamed potatoes, dauphinoise potatoes, sautéed potatoes, French fries or new potatoes, think of the harvest because we can be thankful, regardless of our religious beliefs, for the food we eat. However, as a Christian I am thankful to God for all his provision, love and mercy. Blessings

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Overtaking Continued

Dear readers, Police Advanced Drivers are taught a three-point overtaking method called the overtaking triangle. It defines the best line to take throughout any overtake manoeuvre and is the safest and quickest way to pass another vehicle. In three easy steps you can combine this technique with excellent observation, anticipation and car control. The Overtaking Position. Consider selecting a lower gear when your long-range observation indicates that an overtake may be on. Close in gradually to the vehicle in front until you achieve the ‘Overtaking position’. Move towards the centre line to maximise your view. If the overtake does not come off, drop back again and return to a higher gear until the next opportunity arises. The Take-Off Position. When an overtake opportunity arrives, move carefully and smoothly to the other side of the road to increase your view before you commit to the manoeuvre. All this takes just a second for the driver to assess. If everything is clear, accelerate quickly past the vehicle. If conditions are not right, drop back in behind the vehicle quickly and smoothly. The Return Position. The final part of the overtake triangle returns you safely back to your side of the road, completing the manoeuvre. Steer your vehicle to the left-hand side swiftly and smoothly, and in as straight a line as possible. Take care and use your mirrors to ensure that you do not cut in too quickly on the vehicle you have just passed. Two-Way Roads With three lanes. Britain’s dangerous three-lane roads have been much improved with the addition of white line systems, cross-hatchings and solid white lines. On some roads, particularly on hills, a solid white line is paired with a broken white line. This gives the uphill two lanes (so that slow traffic has a ‘crawler lane’) and faster downhill traffic just one lane. However, where the broken white lines are on the side of the single lane, traffic in this lane is allowed to cross the line for an overtake where it is safe to do so. While the markings are clearly defined, you should always take care and maintain excellent observation on three lane roads, as other drivers may not have your appreciation of the system. If you are interested in the courses that we offer, you’ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 01302 886 276 Safe Driving Paul Tuke.
