Editor’s Letter …
This months issue is bursting with news and stories of the summer holidays, from farewells, charity fund raising to The Auckley Show. We all hoped for fine weather for the Show and thankfully, we were saved from the wet weather which was forecast! The show, once again proved to be a huge success with both locals and people from in and around Doncaster. A Massive well done to Neil Woodward and the committee members who work all year round planning this local event. Next year, the Auckley Show celebrates 30 years, if anyone wishes to get involved, please get in touch with a committee member or contact me. We also have some young people in our villages working hard to raise money for good causes. In Branton, Brooke Pease and her friend have put their time to good use baking cakes for a sale. All money raised went to the Bluebell Wood Hospice. Meanwhile, at St Oswald's Church in Finningley, the Sunday group are organising a sponsored sleepover to help cover the cost of a ‘Death Watch Beetle’ infestation in church! So far they have raised over £400.00! The deadline for the October issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 18th September and The Arrow will be distributed from Friday 27th September 2013!

News, News, News, News, News, News... Kilham Hall Update The weather has been holding steady and Kilham Hall committee hopes that everyone has enjoyed the summer break and we wish all the very best to those who have been awaiting precious exam results throughout July and August. Most activities at the Hall have continued as normal throughout August and the Wednesday Mums and Toddlers Group will be resuming shortly as will our Tuesday morning Coffee Club. In fact, our Coffee Club reopens its doors for a new Term on Tuesday 3rd September and we hope to welcome back all our regular friends and welcome some new faces as well. We open at 10am and begin the morning with Bingo at 10.30am, followed by Christine's humorous monologue, The Quiz and we conclude, around 11.20am, with Sheila's Raffle. There is time in between these activities to enjoy refreshments and have a natter. We'll be holding a MacMillan Coffee Morning one Tuesday in September when the morning's proceeds will be donated to the MacMillan charity and we'll be celebrating the 4th year of Kilham Hall being open in November with Pie and Peas or something just as appetising. Just before Christmas we'll be having our seasonal Coffee Morning with seasonal entertainments so, if you've not joined us before on a Tuesday morning, come along; you'll be made very, very welcome!
We have recently welcomed Mr Rob Chester onto our Management Committee and we are now a healthy committee of 10 members and we are slowly addressing the gender imbalance!! For the moment, our committee has sufficient members but we will notify you of any change should anyone out there be considering joining us in the future. Don't forget to check in the back of The Arrow to find out what activities are on offer on a weekly basis at the Hall and contact details for Bev, our Booking Clerk, are also at the back if you are considering booking the Hall for a private, weekend party. Best wishes to all our local residents, meantime, for the coming autumn season and all its joys! Kilham Hall Committee
The details of our children's Hallowe'en Party are coming together. The date is Sunday 27th October and the time is 3.30pm-6pm. Mr Dan will be in attendance once again and tickets will be on sale at Branton Post Office the week before, so broomsticks at the ready to fly in and get your tickets! Look out for a poster in the Post Office window nearer the time and some advertising in The Arrow. It's worth mentioning that there will be 50 tickets only, available for Primary School children between 4yrs and 11yrs and, due to Hall insurance, we have to politely ask that only one adult per family stays for the duration. Last year's Party was a huge success but at one point, we had more adults with accompanying children outside the stipulated age range and it became difficult for Mr Dan to perform and entertain and, as managers of Kilham Hall, we have to adhere to Health and Safety requirements as regards numbers in the Hall at any one time. Thank you, in advance, for your understanding.

News From Auckley School Nursery Trip to Clumber Nursery children and parents had a fantastic day at Clumber Park. We had fun exploring in the adventure centre followed by a teddy bears picnic and a bear hunt in the woods. The children enjoyed playing in the sunshine particularly with the parachute and their teddy bears.
F2 visit Conisbrough Castle In Reception our topic this half term has been ‘Did Dragons Exist?’ and we have been learning all about dragons, castles, castle life and pretended to be Princesses and Knights. On Friday 5th July we went on a school trip to Conisbrough Castle and had a wonderful day. We could recognise all the features of the castle we had previously learnt about in school. We saw the outlines of all the building and were shocked to discover they didn’t have a bathroom. We went up into the Keep and saw what the rooms would have looked like including the bedroom. We climbed to the top of the Keep and saw the wonderful view. Then we had our picnic looking up at the castle and spent time exploring the grounds. The weather was glorious and we all had a wonderful day.

We Will Rock You! What a way to round off primary school life! Year 6 performed an outstanding, showstopping production – We Will Rock You! Oozing confidence and displaying high energy, the entire class brought Queen’s greatest hits back to life once again. Every child was cast in the end of year production either as a ‘Ga Ga’ girl/boy, Bohemian Rebel or evil doctor, all of whom dazzled family, friends, staff and pupils with their dramatic flare, rhythm and of course vocals however, taking the lead roles included: Charlotte Lee (Scaramouche), Harry Watkin (Galileo Figaro), Molly Fiddler (Meat Loaf), Toby Milner (Britney Spears), Esha Ahmed (Killer Queen) and Luke Caygill (Kashoggi) who were all superb! A great performance on stage of course creates much work backstage. Backdrops, costumes and props which all added to the xfactor were down to Mrs Bowling, Mrs Holmes and Miss Cooper. What a team! How the children worked together to create such a wonderful performance showed their commitment and dedication to ensuring their final farewell to Auckley School was one to remember. Year 6 will of course be missed but after such an amazing performance, certainly not forgotten!
Year 2/1 Visit to The Forest School High Melton The children and adults all had a brilliant day at the Forest School. The weather very warm, just right for all the activities we had in store for the day. The children loved making a den from cut logs and branches that were to be found all over the forest. All the children had to make it big enough for the whole group to sit in. After a cool drink and biscuit break the children made a large picture of a mini-beast from anything they could in the forest. The last activity of the morning was to watch and listen to popcorn popping over an open fire and the best bit getting to eat it! After a well earned picnic lunch the children went on a treasure hunt followed by making habitats for the woodland creatures each group were given. The children all then sat in their dens to make bird feeders using a cone, string, lard and seeds. These were all taken home to put up in their gardens. The final event of the day was to make clay masks which were to be attached to a tree trunk to dry naturally. The children had a wonderful, fun packed day so it is no wonder that it was so quiet on the coach home with half of them falling asleep!

A Fond Farewell As we say goodbye to our Year 6 children Mrs Robinson was given the hard task of picking a child to receive the Auckley Star Pupil Award. We are proud to announce that this year’s winner is George Holt. It has been an emotional time at Auckley School as we are saying goodbye to three members of staff. Firstly Miss Langton is leaving us to take up a position at Rossington St Michaels school teaching year one in a school which she previously attended herself as a child. We would also like to say a farewell to Mr Flint as he has been working at Auckley since October. He came into the school when we needed him to support and has stayed with us through until the summer term. It has not been easy for him as he has been managing to run both Auckley and Dunsville School so we hope he enjoys a well deserved summer break. Before he left us he helped to find us an excellent replacement in Mrs Marshall who will be joining the Auckley Team in September. Thank you for everything you have done Mr Flint you will be missed by all the staff and children at Auckley School (including Kevin’s Angels). Mrs Wride is known and loved by all and she has decided it is her time to move on and find a new challenge in life. It has not been an easy decision for her to make as she has been teaching for 21 years in three different Authorities York, Hartlepool and Doncaster and taught every year group. Mrs Wride is an outstanding teacher who has always been there for everyone in School both children and staff. Mrs Oakley came to the assembly to present Mrs Wride with Special Memory book which was written in and signed from all the children, staff and parents showing their appreciation for all she has done for children and parents. We also had a special guest visitor Mr Gary Barlow (AKA Mr Hodgekinson dressed up) who presented her with all her other gifts from parents and staff. Mrs Wride came to this school herself as a young girl and has been teaching here for the last 7 years. She had made a long lasting impression on everyone at Auckley School and we all wish her the very best in the future as she will be missed by all.

Hayfield Lane Primary School News End of year musical production. This year our Eagle class had great fun in performing the famous story of The Pied Piper. The musical was entertaining, full of humour and colourful characters that the children portrayed very well. We are always proud of the children for their efforts and their commitment to learn their lines. The singing from the Hawk and Kestrel classes was superb and very enthusiastic. Everyone who came to watch the production was amazed at the quality of the acting and singing and parents were very proud of their children. The children are always a delight to work with and had so much fun putting the musical together. Well done to Key Stage 2!
Fond Farewells It is always sad at the end of any school year when we have to say goodbye to people who have been at our school for a long time. We say goodbye and good luck to our Eagle class who move on to The Hayfield School in September. We wish them well and good luck in their new school. We are also saying goodbye to several members of staff. Mrs Haslam and Mrs Spry both LSAs within school leave us to take up new jobs. Mrs Belnavis our deputy head and Kingfisher class teacher leaves to take up a new head post. We would like to wish them all the very best of luck in their new jobs and for the future. Finally, it is with great sadness our head teacher Mrs Round leaves us as she has decided to retire, a decision that was not an easy one. Mrs Round has worked in education for 31 years and 13 of those as head teacher at Hayfield Lane. Mrs Round would like to take this opportunity to thank pupils, parents, staff and governors for all their kind messages, cards and gifts she received at the end of term. The remaining staff, governors and pupils will miss them all and school will not be the same without them.

An amount of over ÂŁ700 was raised with donations still being received for the Harry Matthews Bowel Transplant Fund. Well done again.
New Picnic Tables The provision of the three picnic tables at KIlham Lane recreation ground has received many favourable comments and it is hoped that these will add to the enjoyment of those visiting the recreation ground.
Land Spreading Activity Following a series of complaints by residents regarding the offensive odour that was pervading the area due to land spreading activities the parish council contacted the land owner to outline the problems being experienced. The land owner subsequently apologised for the inconvenience caused and promptly instructed his tenant to cease the activity. The parish council would like to thank the land owner for his co-operation and support in resolving this matter.

Chairman’s Report 2013 The weather is always the main topic of conversation on the run up to the Auckley Show. We look at many forecasts from various sources and although they give a good indication of what we can expect they seem not to be so accurate. This year we were expecting to deal with torrential rain, we got away with a heavy shower, although the strong winds took its toll on the main marquee lining which became lower and lower. A positive from this was we had a ‘cosy atmosphere’. The car park areas were soon full and again 1035 Squadron Air Cadets, based at Armthorpe, did a brilliant job. Can we thank everyone for respecting the local residents by using our free car park facility and not blocking access roads with inconsiderate parking. The Tuesday before the show went well with good weather for the ‘Auckley Show Junior Fishing match’ the organisers Mandy and Ron were pleased with the total of nearly 400lb of fish caught in 4 hours, amazing! The Junior disco on the Friday again saw record numbers attending, another of Mandy’s projects. Some sad news for me was the poor turn out for the fancy dress competition. With only three entries we have decided to call it a day and will not run this event in 2014. We would welcome new ideas to replace this traditional competition. The same can’t be said for the Horticultural and Produce Show with an overwhelming response of a record breaking 600 exhibits on show. Janet and Liz are already looking at how we can increase display areas for next year to make an even bigger impact. I will try and get next year’s schedule prepared and published on our web site in good time so you can plan ahead. You may have seen we have replaced a number of trophies this year, the originals were looking a little worse for wear, the name remains the same and so as not to lose the history we have all previous winners recorded on a plaque on the back of the trophy/ shield. Join in next year and become part of that history and see if we can beat this year’s total. Dave Coulson’s craft marquee was a sell out and feedback suggests we may need to extend this next year. Auckley Scouts, who were in this area again, did well with refreshment sales. Graham Perry played a key role and coordinated the Show Ground plan, nice to report that the emergency access didn’t have to be used this year. Although, Alan the ‘First Aider’, reported having to deal with a very nasty wasp sting.

At 12noon Malc Cook our MC and lighting engineer introduced Barry Lifsey from neighbouring Finningley to open the 2013 Show. The ‘Fun Dog Show’ got underway at 1pm and organiser Cheryl was pleased with the turn out for this, the second year. By 3.30pm Georgina and Julie had a sell out on the ‘Tombola’ with £760 raised. A big thank you to all those who donated prizes and the same goes for our raffles. The car boot sale worked much better with pre booked stalls and something I am sure we will adopt for the future. Diane and Malc were so organised it freed them up to help out Andy and Pete Snowden with the children’s sports. Sally and Mark our youngest committee members are keen to sign up for next year as is Paula who has been on a period of ‘Maternity Leave’ Phil Raine our web man will be updating the site with photos and information about next years plans visit www.auckleyshow.co.uk for a look. Thanks Robin Mokryj from the Doncaster Camera Club for providing a a set photographs that captured the day. I am very encouraged with the feedback from our sponsors who value being part of our community spirit at ‘Auckley Show’ with some pledging even more financial support to us for 2014. Michelle from the Arrow Magazine was present taking photos to compliment this report. Thanks Michelle for your help throughout the year. Lastly a date for your diary, Auckley Show Saturday 16th August 2014 will see our 30th anniversary on the current site.

Baking for a Very Good Cause!
Branton Local, Brooke Pease and her best friend Lili Johnson held a bake sale on Doncaster Road in Branton and raised £130 for Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice at the start of the Summer holidays. They sold lots of different buns and cookies to the village and passers by. Bluebell Wood were very impressed with the total and thought Branton people must really enjoy cakes! Brooke and Lili spent 5 hours baking the day before. They decided they wanted to raise some money doing something they enjoy in the holidays. They chose the Bluebell Wood Hospice as it is a children's hospice. Brooke visited Bluebell Wood to hand over the money they had raised. Helen Mower, Bluebell Woods Fund Raising Manager, showed Brooke around which Brooke found really interesting. Brooke said ‘It is a lovely cheerful, fun place for the children who stay there and their families’. Well Done Brooke and Lili!

As I’m writing this myself and 6 other adults who are taking part in a sponsored sleepover in Finningley Church, along with 15 children from our Sunday Club (aged 6-13), are wondering what we have let ourselves in for... On Friday the 30th of August we are holding a sponsored sleepover in church to hopefully raise much needed funds for the church Restoration Fund. As you may have heard here at Finningley church we are currently awaiting an investigation in to the extent of a Death Watch Beetle infestation in the wooden beams that make up the church roof. This comes at a cost of £2700 due to the church being a grade one listed building which requires a specialist company to carry out the assessment. The £2700 only covers the cost of the initial investigation, not any form of treatment which may be required, money which we have to pay for ourselves as a church, through fundraising.
We are hoping it will be a fun, if a little scary, night for the children and in the process we will raise some money towards the staggering cost of the investigation. Currently we have been sponsored an amazing £323! Any donations and sponsorships are very gratefully received and go a long way to supporting our beautiful church. If you would like to sponsor the children, or take pity on the adults, you can do via our JustGiving page: justgiving.com/htstoswaldchurch or by texting MODA26 £2 to 70070 to sponsor £2. Keep an eye on our Facebook page (facebook.com/ finningleychurch) for pictures from the sleepover and updates on the Death Watch Beetle. Hannah Redeyoff

FAB Parish
Revd Neil Redeyoff and Revd Louise Tinniswood
Variety Is The Spice of Life I’ve now been serving as Curate here for just over a year. This means I’ve now celebrated all the major Christian festivals in the parish and have had the privilege of Baptizing new members of God’s church, marrying couples and setting them out on their new lives together and taking the funerals of a number of parishioners. I’ve done many other jobs on my road to becoming a priest including locksmith, office worker, teacher and radio researcher but I can honestly say no other job has ever presented me with the daily variety that this one does. I find that one minute I’m using puppets to tell the Bible story of Abraham and Sarah at a school assembly and the next I’m sitting at the bedside of someone who’s in hospital. Then I might be reading a commentary on one of the Gospels to prepare my sermon for Sunday and the next minute I might be at a meeting discussing mission strategies within the diocese. I think the reason my job is so very varied and ultimately satisfying is that it primarily involves people and no two people are the same. Each and everyone one of us is different and we bring to every encounter with one another something special and unique. Everyone has different skills and talents and a different insight into any given situation. I know that my strengths lie in being able to relate to people of all ages and to be able to tell a well-timed joke. My weaknesses lie in not being able to cook and finding anything to do with numbers a complete mystery. Christians believe that we are all uniquely created in the image of God. Whilst modern society often tries to put us into boxes and to label us as ‘middle aged’, ‘elderly’, ‘over weight’, ‘middle-class’, ‘clever’, ‘handsome’, ‘ugly’ etc. when God looks at us what he sees is his child. Human beings are part of the beauty of God’s creation and as such precious to him. There may be times when we don’t feel particularly special and there may be times when we say or do things we wish we hadn’t but God’s love is constant and unfailing. He always looks at us as a good parents looks at their child, forgiving our faults and failings and delighting in their strengths and unique qualities. What we should aim to do in response to this is to try and view everyone we meet through God’s eyes forgiving them their mistakes and rejoicing in them as children of God.
