Editor’s Letter...

Wow, what a month! The amazing and thrilling success of the Olympics has boosted everyone both at home and abroad! I don’t think I have ever seen so many non British people wearing our flag abroad! The London Olympics have shown to the world that we are a nation who support and encourage, no matter what flag you are flying. I really hope the Paralympics is as successful and wish all the competitors the very best of luck.

September 2012 Newsletter www.cantleywithbrantonparish.co.uk Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations

The parish council would like to thank the Kilham Hall Management Committee for organising events to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. Everyone attending had a very enjoyable time and benefited from the facilities of the community hall. Well done again.

Fork Junction at Whiphill Top Lane

Concerns are continually raised about the dangerous junction when turning right from New Road and DMBC is proposing improvements as soon as funding is available. In the interim DMBC Ward Councillors have been asked to consider funding a speed monitoring display sign to encourage cars to reduce their speed when travelling through the village. Residents’ concerns regarding speeding traffic on Whiphill Top Lane have been referred to the South Yorkshire Police.

Proposed Development on Doncaster Road

Representations have been received from residents living in close proximity to the site off Doncaster Road that is earmarked for the development of approximately 90 houses. Whilst the parish council has no jurisdiction over planning applications a meeting with a DMBC Planning Officer has been requested to discuss the plans when these are available.

Diary Date – Christmas Carol Singing

The next newsletter will be in December 2012 and will include more details on the Christmas carol singing due to take place on Wednesday 15th December at 6.30 p.m. at Kilham Hall Community Centre.

Auckley Show Chairman’s report 2012 All I can say is ‘The Best Turnout Ever’ what a spectacle; I have never seen so many people on the showground, the car parks were at one point bursting with one off to allow one on. Thanks everyone for their patience. It is not an easy task to manage so many people and vehicles. It was estimated a turn out of four to five thousand people enjoyed the day. Again where we would have been without the logistics put in place by the young ‘Air Training Corp’ from 1035 Squadron from Armthorpe, we had 24 in all helping out. Doncaster Sea Cadets also made their presence known providing help to committee members in particular on the famous ‘Auckley Show Tombola’. So did the Auckley Scout Group providing refreshments in the Craft Marquee. The Fancy dress parade was this year a particular ‘colourful sight’ supported by ‘Andy the Clown’ who provided kazoos to the children. ‘The Mad Hatter’ also joined with his cast members from the Auckley Drama Group. They were met by Auckley Show favourite Mr Magic. All Trade stands and Craft Stalls were fully booked to capacity and provided a wide range of products and services. It was a good decision to include an extra ‘Ice Cream Seller’ all three on site had and excellent day due to the fantastic weather we were so lucky to have. The committee are deeply sorry at having to turn away so many ‘car booters’ this is the first time in the last 28 years that I have know this to have happened, we just did not have room to take on any more, by 8.05am the site was full. I intend to discuss this at our next committee meeting to ensure this will not happen again, I do appreciate all the hard work and effort that goes into preparing to sell at a car boot. I will propose all pitches next year are pre booked and paid for in advance.

of 482 exhibits across the 114 classes and this was despite the appalling weather we have suffered making it a very difficult growing season. Thanks everyone who contributed. Children’s sports had extra fun this year with the introduction of a Pinata and Hoola Hoop games. Who had the most fun Chris and Jim or the kids? The Horse jumping went well with many of the young riders beating their personal best records, well done Lucy Chappell from Boston Park Farm for putting on a great event enjoyed by all. The Tug of War trophy was retained by ‘The Eagle and Child’ Auckley who pulled against gallant opponents ‘The Three Horse Shoes’ Branton. The main marquee was soon turned round to accommodate 300 guests for the evening’s entertainment headlined by ‘Look Sharp’ party band. Fantastic food again provided by Occasions of Epworth couldn’t be faulted. The table reservation system we employed this year, for the first time, appeared to work very well. The night ended at 12 midnight with local legend ‘Chris Whitley’s Disco’ producing a great atmosphere. Thanks for all your support, our sponsors and The Auckley Parish Council during the past year. The next Auckley Show date has been set for Saturday 17 th August 2013. If you would like to contribute through sponsorship, help out on the day or become a committee member get in touch for further details. Finally we welcome feedback on how you feel we can improve, please send an e mail to chairman@auckleyshow.co.uk or just give me a call on 01302 770818. We can now also be found on Facebook, why not be ‘Auckley Show’s’ friend. Neil Woodward Chairman

We were all shocked and non more so than, new committee member, Cheryl who for the first time coordinated the ‘Fun Dog Show’, who would have expected 69 separate dog entries, it was certainly one of the highlights of the show that will be developed further for next year. Rod Gunn from Doncaster Camera Club was tasked with recording the event, he informs me he has some brilliant photos which will soon be published on our web site www.auckleyshow.co.uk Another highlight of the show was the terrific effort everyone made this year with regards the Horticultural and Produce Show. We had a total

Judged 5th August 2012 1st No 23 Margaret Snowden 2nd No 5 Eric Newbound 3rd No 4 Brian Customs 4th No 22 Les Wooll 5th No 11 Alan Thorpe Judges made comment that it has not been a good growing year, too wet and not enough sun. Even so there was a good variety of flowers and vegetables on the allotments. Judging was very close this year and Margaret Snowden slipped into top place once again. Nan Clayton got a mention for the abundance of sunflowers. I can only guess Nan will be looking after the birds this winter with her excellent crop. Clive Hepworth got praise for a nice weed free plot. Alan Thorpe took 5th place with a good variety but was let down with a little weed. Bob Brown on plot 20 got the same feedback. Plot 28 cared for by Anne William had a nice selection but “shame about the weed” Dave Taylor on plot 29 had presented a ‘Very tidy allotment’. The Judges were quite envious of the onions on plot 31 grown by Steve Randerson. Finally Mr D Wack plot 32 had ‘Brilliant beetroot and carrots’. Well done to everyone and the best of luck for next year.

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School ART CLUB VISIT TO THE HEPWORTH GALLERY

On Wednesday the 4th of July the Art Club set off to Wakefield for their visit to the Hepworth Gallery. It was a new visit – what would it be like? Jo and Sharon met us. They were leading our workshop and they took us into the studio where we would be working. Soon we went to the galleries upstairs to see the works of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. After we had done some sketching of our own we went back into the studio to create our own masterpieces!

Class 2 Visit to Cannon Hall

On Wednesday 20th June, Class 2 visited Cannon Hall as part of our ‘Victorian’ topic. We all dressed as servants for the day and thoroughly enjoyed carrying out servants duties. It made us realise how hard Victorian servants must have worked. Our duties included – chopping vegetables, baking bread and making apple crumble in the kitchen, washing clothes, rinsing, using the mangle and hanging clothes on the line in the laundry, making butter in the dairy, polishing, sweeping and beating carpets outside. Finally, seeing upstairs in the house where the family used to live. We learned how to curtsey and bow to our elders and betters, to speak only when spoken to and that children should be seen and not heard! By the end of the day we realised how different Victorians lives were to ours and how hard and long many people worked for. What an exciting and busy day we had.

Class 1 – Seaside Workshop We really enjoyed our visit from Mr Wood who cameto lead a seaside workshop on Tuesday 3 rd July. We watched a slideshow about holidays in the past before watching a real live Punch and Judy show. This was fantastic! Class R visited the National Railway Museum in York as part of our Seaside topic. We enjoyed finding out about how Victorian children travelled to the seaside by train and looked very smart in our ‘best’ clothes!

After the show Mr Wood turned the puppet theatre round so we could see the inside. We found out how he made all the different voices for all the puppets and where he kept them in the stage. In the afternoon we spent some time looking at and handling the puppets. We started to make up our own stories using these puppets. We also did some craft activities where we made a bathing machine and a miniature Punch and Judy puppet theatre. We acted out our own shows. It was a great day full of learning and fun about seaside's from the past.

Mikes Garden & Handyman Services Mowing.

The Infants (and their teddies!) had a great time at a special ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ on Friday 13 July. The wet weather meant it had to be held inside but that didn’t spoil the fun. Money raised from the event went to the Harry Matthews Bowel Transplant Trust.

Auckley School News Mr Artie Visits Foundation 1 Mrs Griffiths wants to thank all the nursery parents for their help and support to help raise money for the British heart foundation. The nursery children took part in Arties Olympic day where they had to sing, dance and participate in physical activities. It was a huge success and we raised £568.00. The children particularly enjoyed the visit from Mr Artie who gave them all an Olympic style medal. Well done everyone!!!!!

Year 6 Visit Hatfield Water Park Auckley School’s Year 6 have recently been on a residential trip to Hatfield Water Park. It was an extremely enjoyable time. A Gold Post Box for All I’m a little disappointed this month, as despite my best efforts I can’t get Bridget at the Blaxton Post Office to paint a post box gold for me. Apparently you need a gold medal from the Olympics, and not a cycling proficiency badge! A gold medal at the Olympics means that an athlete has reached the very pinnacle of their career; they have perhaps ‘made it’. A week or so after the closing ceremony a number of our young people at church received their exam results. I’m happy to report that each one of them gained the qualifications they needed to move on to the next phase in their learning. But what about those people who didn’t win gold and those who didn’t pass an exam? I occasionally tweet on Twitter the social media site. You get 140 characters to tell the world what you are doing or thinking, and so I sometimes write short messages, and I read those of others. As the exam results day loomed Jake Humphrey, who presented a good deal of the Olympics on the BBC, tweeted a brief message. He had apparently not done very well with his qualifications, and had also been sacked from McDonalds due to ‘poor communication skills’. Now though he works in the media and is considered to be a successful presenter. Some might say he has ‘made it’. However, what did people say when he returned home having been sacked from the Big Mac company? What did they say when he returned with this exam results?

S T Hughes

It seems to me that at times the world judges people for how successful they are, how qualified they are, or how powerful they are – those are the people who are perceived to have ‘made it’. But what about those people that are then passed by? Judging a person in this way does not define who they are, it defines who we are.

Plumbing & Heating

Please don’t think that I’m knocking or decrying qualifications or success, I’m not (I’ve got a few exams myself!) I am though suggesting that these don’t define a person. As a Christian I believe that God loves us for who he made us to be – nothing we can do can make him love us any less, and nothing we can do can make him love us anymore. There are no exams to pass in God’s kingdom, he only asks that we sit at the teacher’s feet, and so in his kingdom everyone would have a gold post box! Blessings Revd.
