Community News Sandall Park Sees New Instalment of Equipment The Friends of Sandall Park are delighted to unveil their completed Fitness Station project – which was funded by its successful £10,000 grant from Tesco’s Bags of Help campaign. The supermarket teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative, which saw grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to environmental and greenspace projects. Eight million shoppers voted in stores up and down the country. The additional pieces of fitness equipment completes the highly popular Fitness Station which is along the route of the longest Fitness Trail around the park. Chairman of the Friends of Sandall Park, Sandra Crabtree said, "It's another element in the plan for the park to get people out in the fresh air and exercising for free. We'd like to thank Tesco for the opportunity to provide this facility, and to all the people who voted for us in stores. Caroline Silke, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “It is wonderful to see how the money from our Bags of Help initiative has been spent. This is money that has come directly from Tesco customers living and shopping in each of our regions up and down the country. The feedback for the project has been brilliant. Voting ran in store from 27 February until 6 March – with customers choosing which group they’d like to get the top award using a token given to them at the check-out in store." Dame Rosie Winterton DBE, MP for Doncaster Central, attended the launch along with Lance Bombardier Ben Parkinson, she said “The new fitness equipment is an excellent addition to the Fitness Station and I want to thank the Friends of Sandall Park for all the work they do to raise funds and provide facilities in Sandall Park for the whole community to enjoy.” Further information about the Friends of Sandall park can be found at www.sandallpark.org.uk

The Story of Kirk Sandall War Memorial The reasons why the Parish of Kirk Sandall and its surrounding hamlets have never possessed their own War Memorial is not fully understood. Some years past, the late Mr. Brian Keefe, who had been associated with the village, all his life, as the place of his birth, through lifetime employment at Pilkington Glass, and his sporting interests and achievements, prompted the idea of a War Memorial being erected in the village. In early 2014, work began, a committee was formed, a site was discussed and fund raising began. Establishing names for the Second World War did not prove difficult as every Armistice weekend during Sunday services at St Oswald’s Church successive Rector’s of the village would read out the names of those who had given their lives for their country, these names being published in the monthly Parish Magazine. No names were listed for the First World War. Could Kirk Sandall be a ‘Thankful Village’ as termed by the British writer and journalist Arthur Mee. A village said to be ‘Thankful’ is one that all those who left to serve King and Country returned home again. To date only 41 villages have been identified to this in the country, could the Parish of Kirk Sandall hold claim to be the 42nd? Around the time of the First World War the population of the parish exceeded just more than 200, the men who had responded to the call to arms all returned home, however, there were those who had been born in the parish or had lived some of their lives there, who were less fortunate and whose names are commemorated on other village War Memorial’s around the country. Research stumbled upon, in local newspapers, identified three names of military who had been killed in separate accidents with locomotives on the main Doncaster to Hull railway line at Long Sandall between May 1915 and February 1916. During the first week at the outbreak of World War One, in late July 1914, the Government ordered the guarding and subsequent ‘lock down’ of bridges, waterways etc to ensure the safety of such vital infrastructure. To ensure this, a guard room was erected adjacent to the line close to the road bridge on Clay Lane West which crosses the railway at Long Sandall. Doubtless the line would be key in the transport of men and resources to the east coast and on to the fighting fronts in northern France and Belgium. These soldiers were not local volunteers but reservists from the north of England who had mostly seen previous military service in earlier wars. . In honour of their sacrifice in defending their country and safeguarding the villagers of the parish of Kirk Sandall, the committee decided to include the names of Thomas Allen, William Castel Grey and Harold Sykes of the 5thSupernumeracy Company, Yorkshire Regiment (Reservists) on the War Memorial. A further fourteen names are to be included, all who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Second World War, most being employed at Pilkington Brothers Ltd and Rockware Glass Syndicate as these factories were then known. By early 1940 almost 100 villagers, mostly its men folk had enlisted in the forces, the women who remained, replacing them in the factories, being engaged in manufacturing shell casings and dismantling the wreckage of damaged Lancaster bombers, where every precious last nut and washer were retrieved for future use. Of these fourteen service men, two were married to Kirk Sandall girls, Pilot Officer Hugh D. Murray, a Canadian national, lived in Denton’s Green Lane and was killed in an internal operational training flight in Buckinghamshire on November 6th 1942. He is buried in a military grave at St. Oswald’s. He was the father of a young child at the time of his death. A second military grave at St. Oswald’s is that of Flight Sergeant Navigator Peter W. Harris, who before enlisting lived in Lancaster Avenue and was employed at Pilkington Bros. Peter was also killed in an internal flight accident on February 6th 1945. Two of his sisters, Brenda and Christine and two nieces are active members of the Friends of Kirk Sandall War Memorial Committee. A further member of the committee, Anne, is niece of Telegraphist Thomas McCaffery of the Royal Navy, who lost his life when the destroyer he was serving on HMS Vortigern, was sunk by a German

torpedo boat off the coast of Cromer, Norfolk on March 15th1942. Tom, before joining the Navy in 1938 lived with his parents in King George Square. Tragedy struck both the families of the works managers of Pilkington’s and Rockware. Oswald Uhthoff, of the Royal Engineers and Cambridge graduate, who lived with his parents in The Grove was son of the works manager at Pilkington’s. Oswald died in active service in India on November 25th 1942. Further R.A.F. Sergeant Navigator Sydney D. Wager of the Royal Air Force Reserve, lived in Queen Mary Crescent, lost his life on March 17th 1945, failing to return home after operations over Germany. Sydney’s father was manager of the Rockware Glass Syndicate. Those names who will also will be remembered include R.A.F., Aircraftman Thomas Charnley and Sergeant Eric J. Smith; Army servicemen Private Bernard Tank, Gunner Wilfred Daniel, Private William Argent and Private Frank Oxley and Navy personal Petty Officer James S. Leyland and Artificer Joseph R.Heyes. Research has not provided any names of servicemen from wars which occurred either before the Great War of 1914-18 and wars and conflicts from 1945 onwards. To date, a site for the War Memorial has been agreed, it is to be located in the Coronation Garden on Doncaster Road, opposite the Glasshouse at Kirk Sandall. Fundraising through events and generous donations have been very gratifying from many supporters of the memorial. Mrs Jean Keefe who has succeeded her late husband as chairman of the committee has set the objective of the completion of the memorial by the early summer of 2017 where the fallen servicemen of Kirk Sandall and its small hamlets will be abidingly remembered. If you have any stories, memories or wish to make donation to the memorial please contact members of the committee on 882487 or 884373 (M. Bond, Secretary of the Friends of Kirk Sandall War Memorial, November 2016)

Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. David Templeman was the speaker on Monday 7 November. David is an Elizabethan historian who specialises in subjects in which Sheffield and South Yorkshire are to the forefront. On this occasion his subject was “Sheffield in Tudor and Stuart Times”. After sketching in the history of Sheffield in the thirteenth century, when the small village of Sheffield which was situated at the confluence of the rivers Don and Sheaf acquired its Market Charter, David moved on to the times in question. Sheffield was built on a hillside, the better off living near the top. Those unfortunate to live at the bottom suffered occasional flooding bot from the rivers, and the torrent of water which was allowed out of the water storage area at the top of the village three or four times a year to scour the streets and flush rubbish away. Also at the time there were the beginnings of the metal industries, Sheffield’s cutlery already famous. There were also a comparatively large number of Smiths working a variety of metals. This talk was comprehensively illustrated, adding to the enjoyment of a well researched subject. The meetings of Danum Pobus Club in December will be on Monday 5th when Malcolm Walpole will give an audio visual presentation, “The Voyage up the Mekong”, and on the 19th when members will be enjoying the Club’s Christmas Lunch. The meetings start at 10am at Town Moor Golf Club. Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Geoff Firth (01302 849734) or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information.

It is simply amazing what can be achieved no matter how small or large the issue is. The first Adult Bereavement Support Group is underway and The Young People's Group will start in two weeks. If you are interested please let us have your details so we may reserve a place in the New Year. We are grateful to Awards for All for providing the Funding for these Groups. The Pauline Quirke Academy Doncaster

The Pauline Quirke Academy Doncaster opened its doors for business on Sat 24th Sept 2016, and I have looked forward to every Saturday morning since! Having sadly been made redundant from Ash Hill Academy after 13 happy years there, I worried about what I would do to replace my love for performing arts and encouraging young people to achieve their personal best, whilst giving them the skills set for a good start in life, and PQA has done that! I have met some lovely students and parents from across Doncaster and further afield and now have 80 students ages ranging from 4-18 years. They carousel classes every Saturday morning in Film and television, comedy and drama and musical theatre, and are all eligible to be in the Quirky Kidz Agency if they want to, where they will audition for roles in adverts, film, TV and stage. The academy is run by professionally by myself, and professionally trained teachers, with teaching assistants in every class to ensure the students get the very best experience and training. We operate every Saturday registering at 9.45am until 1pm at High Melton University in fantastic accommodation. We are currently busy working on a Christmas showcase based on Roald Dahl, them moving onto a main school show next year, in between so giving students opportunities such as outside masterclasses, theatre visits and exams. The students we currently have are a great bunch, and they create a lovely supportive and friendly atmosphere within the academy, with new friendships forming. A mixture of abilities form PQA, which is something I am proud of. Those who come each week to improve self confidence, a way to make new friends, and to learn how to be a team and work together, all life skills which will help them in whatever they choose to do in later life, whilst having fun in a safe and caring environment. On the flip side there are students who want to get their first professional acting job, and I cannot wait to get our first PQA Doncaster student on TV! I wish PQA was around when I was growing up! These children are so lucky, as it is a fantastic stepping stone to greater things. PQA Doncaster is the place where we encourage students to “Be yourself, be amazing!” If you want to come and see what it is all about please get in touch with me on : janet.marsh@pqacademy.com for a free taster session. The school is nearly full but we have waiting lists and spaces are still available in some groups. Follow us on Facebook PQA DONCASTER Janet Marsh, Principal
