Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At our meeting on 6 March our speaker was Keith Whatlin. This was his second visit to us in the last few months, and he continued from where he had left off with his story of the History of English Architecture. We started with Gainsborough Hall which is an example of a residential building built mainly of brick, a return to the method used by the Romans one and a half millennia previously. It also has large windows which were back in favour because people did not fell the need to live in fortified buildings any more. Keith talked about the influence that the Greeks had on our architecture (much via the Romans) such as Doric, Ionic and Corinthian supporting columns in buildings and other architectural features. He also featured Hardwick Hall (both the old ruined hall and the newer on which is the current visitor attraction) in his examples and photographs. Later in the month, on the 20th, our old friend Pat McLaughlin continued the historical theme when he spoke to us about “Signs, Symbols and Secrets”. Our Spring Ladies Lunch took place at Ye Old Bell at Barnby Dun on Thursday 23 March when over seventy members and Guests enjoyed a fine social occasion. Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Geoff Firth (01302 849734), David Allen (01302 885813 or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information.

Funding of £500 available for local groups to facilitate health and social care conversations Conversations around health and social care can be discussed in a range of innovative ways, and that’s why Healthwatch Doncaster has launched its microgrant scheme for local groups to apply for £500 to help engage, inform and influence. Healthwatch Doncaster is excited about working in partnership with not for profit, third sector, or local community groups to support them in facilitating conversations around people’s health and social care. There is no barrier in place for creative conversations so any idea – for example, the use of technology or designing and delivery of interactive events/workshops – is welcome. Healthwatch Doncaster Chief Operating Officer Andrew Goodall said: “Healthwatch Doncaster wants to continue to foster long-term working relationships with local groups, and as part of the micro-grants scheme, we will provide them with monetary and on-going support to have conversations around health and social care. “With the use of Healthwatch Doncaster’s Feedback Centre that has become a hub of information for local people to access, we aim to receive stories on local people’s experiences on using services through a variety of additional capturing methods.” There are a number of eligibility criteria to fulfil for groups and to complete an application form detailing their plans. “I’m excited to hear and discuss ideas that groups have cultivated and it’s a great opportunity for working together to engage and inform the public, and use their comments to influence change for health and social care services,” said Andrew

CONFESSIONS OF A SERIAL LITTER PICKER! The Keep Britain Tidy ‘Great British Spring Clean’ event 3rd – 5th March was looming but the night before I didn’t think I was going to make it as I’d started with a rotten cold - sore throat, runny nose & was sneezing for England so I dosed myself up with Extra Strength Sudafed (other brands are available) & pockets full of tissues & went off the next morning to meet the other Friends of Quarry Park volunteers at 10am at the St Mary’s Road car park entrance to Quarry Park. Amanda, Barbara, Bob, Delyse, Gay, Janice, Karen, Pete & a lady from DMBC were already there, lurking with intent. We were all kitted out in our FoQP high viz jackets, armed with litter pickers & lots of blue, heavy duty ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ litter bags. We split up into several groups & set off to rid Quarry Park & surrounding areas of the blight of its awful piles of rubbish – discarded foil crisp packets, sweet wrappers, pop & beer cans, polystyrene food boxes, glass bottles, plastic bottles & bags, paper cups, straws, old clothes, a bright pink wig! (you know who you are) & a selection of balls, etc, etc. Hardly any of these items are bio -degradeable so will remain intact for years just getting blown around & around, making our Park & streets look dreadful. By 11am Amanda, Karen & me had filled 3 bags from the path down from Dunsville Post Office to the Park, then the rain started. The rain got worse but we kept going until 12.15, now with 6 bags full but on a positive note we did uncover lots of beautiful snowdrops, purple crocuses & some lone daffodils that were previously buried. We dragged our heavy bags back into Quarry Park & reconvened at the car park to discuss our ‘spoils’ with the other volunteers who had collected 12 bags of rubbish! We were all absolutely shattered but we hadn’t quite finished clearing the path from the Post Office yet so me & Amanda returned to our mission (should we choose to accept it?) & after to clear the High Street bus stop areas, especially the one opposite the Flare Path pub which was horrendous. Weary, hungry & as wet as we could possibly get, we struggled on to finally complete our task with another 3 bags filled by 2pm. I hope that everyone has noticed what an improvement we all made to the area we live in & are proud of. It is a shame that we have to do it but imagine what it would be like if we didn’t. Please think about the impact of dropping litter, not only on our environment but also to our precious local wildlife, we are all responsible for our actions & it doesn’t take a minute to put rubbish in a nearby bin or even take it home. It’s got to be worth it if it keeps our villages & parks looking cleaner & prettier. I’m thinking of trying to get Litter Picking reclassified as an ‘Extreme Sport’, we certainly felt it was after 4 hours of bending, stretching, slipping down mud banks, being attacked by brambles & hawthorn bushes in the rain & we have the scars to prove it! but at the end of it all, I must confess I enjoyed seeing the final result – all clean & tidy again so please help us to keep it that way. Oh plus lots of calories burnt off in the process! A Friend of Quarry Park, see more photo’s on our Facebook site/website.
