Community News Mothers' Union Barnby Dun We are part of the diocese of Sheffield. There are 8 deaneries each deanery has a number of branches. Barnby Dun is one of 8 branches in the Doncaster Snaith and Hatfield deanery. Our worldwide President visits our diocese this March. Talking about our work and encouraging us to ‘Follow in Mary Sumner’s Footsteps’, our theme for 2018. At Barnby Dun we are hoping to raise awareness of domestic abuse and have put together a display and presentation showing that 104 women are killed every year as a result of domestic abuse, that is 2 every week and the number is growing; it is a crime! Local refuges have supported thousands of women and children who are at risk of being subjected to domestic abuse or have recently left an abusive relationship. The main goal of the refuge is to find safe and secure accommodation for them in an area of their choosing. Mothers' Union provides ‘Emergency Home Starter Baskets’ and ‘Bounty Bags’; and also helps to fund day trips and holidays for those families affected by domestic abuse. Our main aims and objective and is to support and encourage family life wherever we can. In April we celebrate spring, as a warden from Thorpe Marsh Nature Reserve comes to talk to us. A very happy and joyful Easter to you all ‘He is Risen’. For more information Telephone 01302883637

Hatfield Town CC It's been another busy time off the field at Hatfield Town CC with lots of good news. Firstly, we are proud to have Arrow Publications sponsoring our new Under 9 Red's team and Arksey School of Motoring sponsoring last years side. Having local businesses willing to help us in our efforts is a real boost to us and will ensure the teams are well kitted out this season. A big thank you to both for your support, it really is appreciated. Following on from last months grant, from the Tweenbridge Windfarm Fund, we have now secured ECB funding towards the remaining cost of new mobile covers. The new covers will make a big difference to our ability to ensure games are played and our pitches continue to be the best in the area. Whilst celebrating this news we then received notice from the National Lottery 'Awardsforall' scheme that we had been successful in receiving funding towards additional coaching and equipment. The award made particular mention that it had been made in recognition of the work we are doing for the local community. The club committee have decided to invest the additional coaching into our future and will be looking to provide sessions at local schools, particularly to years 2 and 3, and local community groups. Our Family Friday nights begin on the 13th April starting at 6:00pm, Children of all ages are welcome to come along and join in the coaching sessions with our ECB qualified coaches or just come and have some fun on the field. The bar and kitchen will be open as usual so if you fancy a drink and some good food in a pleasant environment feel free to join us! After a busy winter off the field it's time for the teams to get back onto the field in April. The 1st XI start their season on the 21st April by hosting league champions Fairburn and the 2nd XI travel to Stainbrough. The Midweek XI start their fixtures on the 26th at home to champions Whitley Bridge. The juniors then get their seasons underway in May. Good luck for the season ahead everyone!

Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. We had three events in March. On Monday 5 March we once again welcomed Stephen Gay, who gave us one of his brilliantly illustrated railway talks. This time we were taken on two defunct railway lines which have been converted to walking and cycling tracks. First we journeyed from Scarborough to Whitby up the coastal route, looking at the sites of old stations, view of the sea and countryside, and taking in the stories of people who lived and worked on the line. Then we went south west to Bath to do a similar expedition down the Bath(Park Green) to Radstock track. Radstock was a prominent coal mining town of the former Somerset coal field. Both parts of the presentation were entertaining and informative. On Monday 19 March our guest speaker was Martin Johnson who spoke about his time as a Sheffield Bobby. As a young man brought up in Barnsley, Martin joined the Sheffield Police and being a big man, he was assigned to policing the “rougher” areas of the city where incidents of violence were frequent. Some occasions had their funny side and were treated to a serial of anecdotes about the job. And between these two meetings, members and guests met at Ye Olde Belle at Barmby Moor for the first of this year’s Ladies’ Lunches. As usual this was a very well attended event which was enjoyed by all. There will be only one indoor meeting in April because Easter Monday falls on the first Monday of the month. The meeting will be on Monday 16 April when the speaker will be Pat Maclaughlin who will speak about “The History of Mining”, a very appropriate subject for Doncaster and its environs. Outdoors, the Crown Green Bowling section will start playing at Armthorpe from Wednesday 4 April. Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191221) or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information.

PREMIER LAWN CARE COMPANY LAUNCHES NEW ‘MAKEOVER’ SERVICE

BRITAIN’S premier lawn care company has just launched a unique ‘Makeover’ service to give consumers in the Doncaster East area the perfect patch – without the hassle of re-turfing. GreenThumb’s Lawn Makeover programme guarantees exceptional service to create a wonderful lawn – at a fraction of the cost of laying new turf. Its Makeover is unique, says the company, because as well as killing and completely removing wornout grass, choking moss and problem weeds, its expert staff re-seed the clean soil with an exclusive grass seed mix, top-dress with recycled, organic and sustainable compost to nourish its growth, and then make a number of aftercare visits. Doncaster East GreenThumb branch owner, Chris Potton, says the Makeover is ideal for new or existing customers in older or new-build properties, who want to replace old, dying or poor -quality turf full of coarse or weed-grasses, with the most luxurious, green and weed-free lawn possible. Mr Potton says: “With at least 10,000 lawn treatments a year, our 2,500 customers are amazed at the 'miracles' – in their own words – our professional lawn operatives can perform. This Makeover is our biggest and best yet!” Mr Potton, who has been running the branch since 2009, says: “Re-turfing is often the first thought – but our Makeover is far superior and saves you around 50%. Based on an average lawn size of 160m (approx. 190yards) it’s around £8 per square metre. Larger lawns are even less per square metre.” Doncaster East covers Thorne, Moorends, Barnby Dun, Edenthorpe and Armthorpe areas as well as Finningley, Westwoodside, Epworth, Crowle, the western side of Scunthorpe and Messingham. To contact GreenThumb Doncaster East for a free, no-obligation Lawn Makeover appointment and quote, call 01427 238442, email doncastereast@greenthumb.co.uk or request a visit online at www.greenthumb.co.uk/branch/ doncaster-east#contact

The Friends of Sandall Park (FoSP)

have launched a Crowdfunding appeal for a Wheelchair Roundabout for Sandall Park. They have already had an inclusive Nest Swing installed for less able children to be able to play with their siblings and friends. This is a new system which DMBC have signed up to and allows groups such as FoSP to register projects on the Spacehive Crowdfunding Platform. This invites people from the community, as well as businesses to pledge money towards the funds required. NO MONEY WILL BE TAKEN FROM ACCOUNTS UNLESS THE FULL AMOUNT IS REACHED. All the major backers will be looking to see how much support is received from the community and FoSP need as many people to pledge towards it please, if it's only £2. The more people showing an interest the more likely they are to receive funds from the major companies. They need to raise £14,940. Log on to www.spacehive.com/i-can-play-too#/idea to see what it's all about and make a pledge. Ethan - a 5ry old with Cerebal Palsy who started all this! Says "I really love the new nest swing but I'd really like a wheelchair roundabout". So there you have it. Thank you for your support, Sandra Crabtree, Chairman Friends of Sandall Park www.sandallpark.org.uk

Moment

for

was when the first pint of Sandall Park Beer was pulled! This is a strong red beer, reflecting the history of the park in that it was where clay was removed for the brick works which were situated at that site. The official launch of the beer was at the Doncaster Brewery on Sunday 25th February, attended by Dame Rosie Winterton MP, who pulled her own pint. She was presented with a bottle of the instantly popular brew as a keepsake. Doncaster Brewery also have 6 real ales the majority of which are brewed on the premises and generally have 1 or 2 guest beers. All the beers brewed on site at Doncaster Brewery and Tap are named after local Doncaster icons and each comes with it's own history. Doncaster Brewery love all things beer and aim to promote all things Doncaster through their beer There are 6 cider pumps with a wide variety of traditional real ciders and perrys to choose from, from dry to sweet and flavoured with such things as Damson, Beet&Orange and Rhubarb and 6 keg beers and as a regular they have Fruh Kolsh which is a German Helles Beer. The Brewery & Tap is based at 7 Young Street, Doncaster DN1 3EL which in the Centre of Doncaster with easy access to both buses and trains it being just a short walk from the Doncaster Interchange. Something New at Thorne Camera Club In spite of the dreadful weather we had, Gianpiero Ferrari FRPS, EFIAP, DPAGB , battled up the M1 from his home near Leicester to share with members and guests his experience of Sri Lanka. ‘Sri Lanka is a Wildlife Paradise,’ he said. ‘ A real delightful country with an interesting culture and very friendly people. Buddhism (the main religion) instilled in the people respect for the land and its wildlife, making this Island a very special place for Nature lovers. Sri Lanka has over 460 species of birds (over 20 are endemic) lots of mammals, such as Elephants, Leopards, Sloth Bears, Wild Boar, Giant Squirrels, Mongoose, Wild Buffaloes, Spotted, Sambhur and Barking Deer, Macaque, Grey and Purple Faced Langur Monkey, Reptiles and colourful exotic Butterflies. If ever you get the chance to visit Sri Lanka you will not be disappointed.’ The club was not disappointed with Gianpiero’s excellent photographs of his trip, which covered every aspect of life in Sri Lanka. The following week was a bit different from the usual competition, as this time there was no judge. The members had the opportunity to judge for themselves the entries from the other members. With just an Open section, where any picture is eligible, members studied and marked the prints displayed. Using the knowledge and expertise they have developed, they made their choices, the adjudicators calculated the scores and announced the results. Out of twelve shortlisted photographs, the winners were – Sunday Akpan’s snow scene titled ‘Shadowland’ first, and Terry Gunnill and Allen Denby equal second. Highly Commended were Tom O’Shea and Andy Hendry with Allen Denby also Commended. On a more practical level, Portrait Night is always popular as it is a rare opportunity to use the studio equipment and get the cameras clicking. In the absence of any invited models, club members volunteered to sit in and have their photos taken. Although most photographers are happiest behind the camera, some acted as models for the benefit of others. It wasn’t all serious though, some fun was had by dressing up in wigs and masks so some different kinds of portrait could be taken, and displayed on the Facebook page!! Final selections of suitable entries for the Sheffield Photographic Society Annual Knockout Competition have been made, and members are hoping to do as well as last year. The competition is held on the outskirts of Sheffield on Saturday March 24 th, when members and guests can go along to support the Thorne club, and see a fantastic array of stunning images from many other Yorkshire clubs. If anyone is interested in joining them, the cost is £3.00 pp payable on the door, details from David on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

St. Oswald's Church, Sandall Lane. Kirk Sandall

This church, mentioned in the Domesday Book, is over 900 years old and stands where the original old village of Kirk Sandall once stood down by the canal. It was replaced as the parish church by The Church of the Good Shepherd on Church Balk, Edenthorpe in 1978 but because of its age and architectural importance was taken into the care of The Churches Conservation Trust. A community group called The Friends of St. Oswald's Church has been in existence since 2007 and works to help to look after the church and promote it in the community. Many residents of Kirk Sandall and Edenthorpe do not even know it is there so if you are one of those why not come along to one of our Open Days which are held each month during the summer. You will be able to see inside this remarkable building which is an amazing survivor of our community heritage and enjoy a cup of tea and the chance to chat to our volunteer stewards. A new housing development is now being built on the site of the old village so once again the church will bear witness to the changes that have swirled around its doors for past centuries. Admission to our Open Days is free but donations to contribute to the maintenance of the church are always welcome. Once again, Doncaster is experiencing a number of burglaries where the intention is to steal car keys and ultimately the householder’s car. The type and quality of security devices fitted to many motor vehicles means that relatively few vehicles can be stolen without a key; necessitating in some cases, the key to be stolen in order to steal the vehicle. Some thieves will take car keys, which are found during a burglary and take the vehicle to take themselves and the stolen property from the scene. Others will target the house after seeing a desirable motor vehicle parked at a house. The common thread during these burglaries is that in all cases, the keys are found by the offender as they are usually left on open display. In some cases, vehicle keys left on a table inside the front door have been stolen by reaching through the letter box using a pole or similar with a hook on the end. The main prevention technique is to take your keys to bed with you. Do not leave car keys on a table inside the door on the kitchen work surface. The belief that offenders will come into the bedroom to steal keys is not one supported by statistics. There is only one report of this happening and the vehicle in question was a Supercar valued at over £300,000. Secure your house to reduce the chances of becoming a victim of burglary. If your doors have Euro profile cylinder locks that are more than two years old, change the locks for ones that comply with Security standard SS312 or TS007 3 star. Further information on these types of lock can be found via your local Master Locksmiths or on their website at http://www.locksmiths.co.uk/faq/lock-snapping-most-secure-lock-cylinder/ Burglary prevention advice can be found on the South Yorkshire police website at http://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/sites/default/files/4-9-14%20Janes%20approved%20artwork.pdf If the thief steals the car using the ignition keys, that also means the alarm system and immobiliser are inoperative. Consider fitting a tracking device to your vehicle or a separate physical security device such as a Disklok.
