Community News Edenthorpe War Memorial You will have seen and approve we hope to the new paving area at the war memorial site this was applied for in mid 2016. An officer from Doncaster MBC came to give a talk at a Parish Council meeting and I was able to ask the officer if he would look into the possibility of getting a grant to do some work to complete the project. I told him that Edenthorpe WMG had done all the raising money, donations, goods via the local community and businesses. The officer asked the parish clerk to contact him and that he would explore the possibility of us getting a grant. True to his word a few days later he asked what we would like to do at the site and with the help of the Parish clerk and all the parish councillors we gave him our plan and the cost. The grant was to be for work done to the village for the parish. The parish council have been most supportive right from the start of the project back in 2014. The paving received lots of pleasing comments on the finished work. The planned work was done by JDs property services as Paul has guided us over the project from the start. We have work which was not started as we waited for the winter to pass. The wreathes were removed in February and are in my garage, If you want yours it can be returned to you just let me know. Once again we have to thank Mr and Mrs Ridley for giving us free water and electric to make the laying of the paving much easier. Mr Ridley has just had a big operation and I know you will join with us to wish him a speedy recovery. The only down part was news I was given a month ago, that a child kicked the crosses over on the memorial. This was witnessed by a nearby resident and the mother made her child replace the crosses. Please remember this is a memorial to those who gave their lives and respect it. Edenthorpe War Memorial is a dedicated memorial and fully registered. Please do not use the Memorial for political gain, I say this because Edenthorpe War Memorial group has been asked if we are attached to any political party. WE ARE NOT. This was asked as two political parties published leaflets showing candidates stood by the war memorial. Dame Rosie Winterton was hands on as much as she could be for the project making calls to Government Minsters to help us when asked. Thank you for your help Rosie. It is sad that over the last few weeks on 2 occasions the memorial site flag has been lowered to half mast for all the village to pay show respect to those people that sadly were victims of terrorist attacks. Edenthorpe Parish council have received a kind donation from Rose Mckone, the widow of Mr Frank Mckone. Mrs Mckone donated a sound System to the parish. This will be used on Remembrance day 12 November 2017 at the village war memorial site. Frank Mckone worked in Edenthorpe for over 50 Years He was a well liked, kind and respected gentleman who worked at Edenthorpe Carpets. He leaves a wife Rose son James and 2 daughters Louse and Diane and grandchildren. Harold Scrivens

Protect your Home from Opportunistic Thieves. With the weather due to (hopefully!) pick up again this weekend, our Crime Reduction Officer Eamonn Larkin has put together some advice around protecting your home from opportunistic thieves. “Just like you thieves love the hot, sunny weather because they know it means lots of open doors and windows – just the kind of things they are looking for,” said Eamonn. Unfortunately, the hot weather does tend to lead to an increase in the number of sneak-in burglaries through insecure properties. Last year, July and August saw a more than 20 per cent increase in the number of burglaries happening at homes, which were insecure. Eamonn said: “By taking a few simple precautions before you head outside and enjoy the warmer weather, you can keep thieves out while you have fun. “My main tip would be to never leave windows or doors open if you aren’t in the room or in the house at all. “An open window is an open invitation to a thief, particularly if it’s an open window downstairs. “If you are out in the back garden enjoying the sunshine or a BBQ, make sure your windows and doors are locked and secured. The last person you want to invite to your BBQ is a thief.” There are also a few other tips, to help keep your property safe this summer. Don’t leave your car keys on the table, or by a window. If your keys are on display, a sneak-in thief may well take the keys and then your car. Try not to leave garden tools and garden furniture out all night, where possible; keep them in a secure garden shed or garage that can be locked every evening. If your garden shed has windows, consider putting a curtain across so that people cannot see what is inside. As an added precaution, it might also be worth considering chaining larger items together. Use a permanent marker or UV pen to mark your property with your postcode and house number. If it is stolen this can make it easier for us to identify and return to you. These are simple precautions that hopefully everyone can take to make sure thieves don’t steal the summer enjoyment from you,” said Eamonn. “It’s also important to bear in mind that if you are burgled and try to make a claim, this can prove problematic if you have left a door or window open. “A house with windows and doors even half open means it’s half the effort for a thief to get into your property. Please, don’t make it easy for them, ensure you close and lock them.” For more tips and advice on how to secure your home this summer, please visit our dedicated webpage southyorks.police.uk/bewise. Hatfield Town Cricket Club It continues to be a busy season at Hatfield Town CC with all the sides being in action over recent weeks. In one weekend we even fielded 7 senior sides in 5 days, including putting 3 full sides out on one Sunday to fulfil all our fixtures, which is a major achievement these days. The 1st XI had some positive results against South Kirkby and Hooton Pagnell in the league before slipping up against West Bretton and Rossington before getting back on track with convincing wins against Old Sharlston and Askern. In the cup we repeated our success against Pagnell in equally convincing style then avenged the league defeat by West Bretton with a great away win and now host unbeaten league leaders Streethouse in the semi-final. An increasingly youthful 2nd XI have picked up some impressive wins, beating Netherton, Garforth, Sykehouse and Ferrybridge1st XI's in convincing fashion and are now sitting comfortably in mid-table and hoping to push on further. It has been a quiet few weeks for the Sunday XI who have only had two fixtures; a much depleted side travelled to Barnsley CC and were soundly beaten before hosting Glasshoughton and coming out on top after a powerful all round performance. The Evening league side have had a mixed few weeks due to weather cancellations and also sit mid-table after some mixed results, the highlight being a nail-biting one run success over Goole Town. The Junior section continues to prosper and all 3 sides have put in performances that really bode well for the future. There are definitely some senior players of the future in the teams! The Friday night junior training session are more popular than ever, with the field flooded with children we now wish we'd entered more than one Under 9 team as we have so many attending. We'll be trying to arrange some friendlies to make sure they all get some game time. Our ECB Allstars Scheme for 5-8 year olds is now well underway under-way the kids have taken to it with real enthusiasm. This club update can't pass without mention of the Spring Bank Holiday Rounders Tournament which made headline news on the RoundersEngland website. The day was a massive success, with teams of mixed age and genders competing against each other and being supported by many from the village. Everyone went home happy and in good spirits and it was a great fund raiser for the club, once again showing what an integral part of the community we are becoming. You can follow us on Twitter and Facebook or at http://hatfieldtowncricket.co.uk/ if you'd like to keep in touch with our latest news.
