Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. On Monday 19 November Richard Wimpenny was our guest speaker whose presentation was entitled “Why Hitler?”. Richard covered Hitler’s life and the events he was involved in or which triggered from his early life in Vienna before WWI until 1939. He told us about how Hitler aspired to be an artist in his youth when he did not have to work for his living, having inherited monies from his mother and father, both of whom died when he was young. The young Hitler served as a runner in WW1 and then began his political career in the chaos of Germany in the 1920’s, first trying for political power through violence, and later cunningly using the democratic system to obtain absolute power. Throughout this time he rode his luck, with eventual devastating consequences for Europe. The beginning of December (3rd) brought us a visit to “The Silver Screen” in the company of William Gildersleve. This was a short history of cinema in the 1950’s when significant changes took place. There was the advent of television, especially in the USA , which resulted in audiences beginning to fall. The film industry fought back with innovations such as wide screen, colour, improved sound, spectacular films, and covering subjects which TV did not dare to touch. This was a nostalgic return to our childhood and youth. Then, on December 17 members held their Annual Christmas Lunch at the Golf Club. On 7 January the Club will be holding its Annual General Meeting and then on Monday 21 January Richard Bell’s presentation will be “The Sand House”, a talk about a historic house near the centre of Doncaster which is now demolished and buried. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information.

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club walk the 1st or 2nd Sunday in every month and we welcome new members. We are not a competitive bunch and our walks are for fun and enjoyment of our beautiful countryside. All our walks are led by experienced leaders and we offer two each month, one of around 8 miles or a slightly longer one of 11 to 13 miles. We set off from Waterdale in Doncaster by private coach and travel to the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District or other equally lovely places. On 9th December we enjoyed a moderate walk in North Nottinghamshire and as is our Christmas tradition our walk was followed by a carvery at The Boat Inn at Hayton. If you fancy joining us, our January walk takes place on the 13th and we will be walking from Harewood to Otley. If you can't make it in January why not join us on 10th February when we are off to The Peak District. It`s a great way to meet like-minded people, enjoy our countryside and get a little bit fitter at the same time! For more information, you can find us at http://www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk/ or search Facebook for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club

Help Support Your Local Hospice St John’s Hospice in Balby, is a vital community asset, helping Doncaster residents and their families in their time of need. It runs a day hospice as well as an inpatient unit. Do you have a loved one who needs these services? If so, please speak to your GP. Run by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, staff at the hospice continually fundraise with all money pumped into patient care and support and to make patients’ lives more comfortable. Here’s some feedback from loved ones: “Thank you for making my relative feel safe and comfortable at the most awful and frightening time in his life” “We would like to say thank you so much for taking very good care of my relative and also her family and visitors. Nothing was too much trouble at a time when we all needed help and support, it was priceless”. The hospice, which is based off Weston Road at Balby, is currently recruiting for volunteers. Volunteers help in a range of ways including manning the reception, drivers to bring day patients to the hospice, gardening and much more. Fancy volunteering? I am sorry to have to report that burglary offences are continuing at houses and I have noticed an increase in shed and garage burglaries. Pedal cycles continue to be targeted and an increasing number of these are being stolen from sheds. If you have purchase a pedal cycle at Christmas for yourself or as a present for someone else, don’t let it be stolen from a shed. Sheds are by design not a secure environment to store valuable property. If all else fails, thieves will remove a shed roof and steal property that way. Replace screws in hinges with clutch head or non-return screws. Add a couple of additional hinges to support the original hinges fitted. Fit a substantial padlock and reinforce that part of the door to which the lock is fitted with a sheet of 16-gauge sheet steel. Use a coach bolt to secure the padlock and hasp to the shed. Use a ground anchor and cable to secure your property inside the shed. Ensure the anchor is securely located in the ground and not simply fastened to the shed itself. If you do not enter the shed at night, why would you need a light inside? Usually the only people going into sheds at night are thieves. Consider fitting an alarm. Battery operated alarms are not expensive and can be quite effective. JNE Security manufacture a battery operated portable alarm that sends a signal to a receiver up to 200 metres away or a text message to a mobile phone. Both are simple methods of alerting a householder that someone has entered their shed or other out building. The devices are cheap and further information can be found at http://personalalarms.com/acatalog/shed-alarms.html Burglary prevention advice can be found on the South Yorkshire police website at http://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/sites/default/files/4-9-14%20Janes%20approved%20artwork.pdf If you have any questions you can contact Eamonn Larkin the Doncaster Police crime reduction officer via email eamonn.larkin@southyorlks.pnn.police.uk or telephone 01302 385869

Whilst the men are preparing for their season the ladies have been having a successful time in the Women's Indoor Softball Six a Side League. They finished the season with three straight wins, including a victory over league champions Rockingham CC. The ladies finished 2nd in the league which was a fantastic achievement given they were all beginners to the sport prior to the season. They certainly made an impact in the league awards with Julie Clegg winning the Best Batter award and youngster Amy Jordan winning the league's Most Valuable Player award. All the players have enjoyed their first ever experience of cricket and cannot speak highly enough of the fun and great spirit in which the games are played. There will be a new season starting in the New Year, if you'd like to get involved drop us an email at hatfieldtown@outlook.com and one of the team will be in touch.
