Heritage Open Days Festival 2019. 13th - 22nd September. St. Oswald’s Church, Pilkington Road, Kirk Sandall will be open on Saturday and Sunday September 21st and 22nd between 11.00am and 4.00pm as one of 8 attractions in Doncaster taking part in this national 10 day event. For full details of places/dates and times consult the website at heritageopendays.org.uk and click on the visit tab, scroll down to the search by area and select Doncaster from the list. Admission is free but it is necessary to book in advance for some events. At St. Oswald’s, a building that goes back at least as far as the Domesday Book in 1086, the displays will concentrate on local history photographs. These will particularly relate to the 100th anniversary of the coming to Kirk Sandall of Pilkington Brothers, glass manufacturers based in Lancashire, who chose our area to build their new factory and by so doing changed the lives of the small number of people owning or earning their living from working on the land here forever. People who have visited our Open Days since May will have seen the information we have been able to find about the Company’s plan to build their new ‘garden village’ off Brecks Lane. The Friends of St. Oswald’s is hoping to work with others in the community including the Parish Council and Kirk Sandall Primary School, to mark this dramatic Also Fit Alarms change in the history of the area. We have been collecting memories and photographs and it is our intention to display these during 2020 – 100 years since building work actually began on the factory and the new village. If you would like to know more, or have a contribution of your own to add to our archive, you can contact us via our website stoswaldskirksandall.co.uk

Crime Prevention I have to bring to your attention the continuing number of burglaries occurring across Doncaster. In certain parts of the Borough, houses are targeted purely for the make of car parked at the address. Prestige German cars are among those favoured by thieves. The stolen vehicle can have its identity changed and sold on to an innocent buyer or exported abroad or dismantled and the parts sold on, The type and quality of security devices fitted to many motor vehicles means that relatively few vehicles are stolen without a key, necessitating in some cases, the key to be stolen in order to steal the vehicle. Some thieves will break into a property to obtain the car keys and then steal the car. Sadly, on some occasions the thief does not even have to break into a house to steal the keys. In some recent cases, vehicle keys left on a table inside the front door have been stolen by reaching through the letter box using a pole or similar with a hook on the end. The main prevention technique is to take your keys to bed with you. Do not leave car keys on a table inside the door on the kitchen work surface. The belief that offenders will come into the bedroom to steal keys is not one supported by statistics. There is only one report of this happening and the vehicle in question was a Supercar valued at over £300,000. If the thief steals the car using the ignition keys, that also means the alarm system and immobiliser are inoperative. Consider fitting a tracking device to your vehicle or a separate physical security device. Secure your house to reduce the chances of becoming a victim of burglary. If your doors have Euro profile cylinder locks that are more than two years old, change the locks for ones that comply with Security standard SS312 or TS007 3 star. If every householder in Doncaster fitted security rated door locks to their property the number of burglaries would drop drastically. With the occasional bouts of nice weather we are experiencing, we can enjoy our gardens or just open our doors and windows to provide ventilation. Sneak in burglaries occur when thieves walk into houses via open doors or reach in though open windows to steal property. Do not leave a room that has an open window, always shut the window before leaving the room. Similarly if the rear door is open, stay in that room or be in a location where you can see the door or anyone approaching it. As always, the advice not to leave cash, wallets or other valuables on open display or on work surfaces near open windows applies at this time of year. Information on security rated locks is available at your local Master locksmiths or on their website at http://www.locksmiths.co.uk/faq/lock-snapping-mostsecure-lock-cylinder/ Burglary prevention advice is available on the South Yorkshire police website at http://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/sites/default/files/49-14%20Janes%20approved%20artwork.pdf Crime Reduction Officer South Yorkshire Police

Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. The Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster at 10am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests, (see www.probusonline.org/danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring, Autumn and Bowling Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Section play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. The second meeting in July was the Members’ Lunch which took place at the golf club. Members spent a pleasant three hours eating a splendid lunch and conversing amongst each other. Then on 5 August our guest speaker was David Townend (not Tracey Bull as advertised) whose subject was “The Yorkshire Air Ambulance”. David, who is a volunteer with YAA, took us through its history, starting in 2000 with one second hand Russian helicopter to the present day with the purpose built headquarters at Nostell Priory and two new Airbus H145 helicopters. The helicopters are piloted by professional helicopter pilots and the para-medics are secondees from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service. The event which really brought the Yorkshire Air Ambulance to the public’s attention was its transfer of Richard Hamilton to hospital after his near fatal crash at Elvington in 2008. There are now on average four calls a day for the YAA, but during the Grand Departe of the Tour de France it went up to about forty a day. After the talk David answered a series of questions, and everyone present enjoyed this informative and thought provoking presentation. On 2 September Tony Cowley’s subject is “Vintage Motor Cycles” and on 16 September Philip Caine will travel from “Barrow to Baghdad and Back”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST Some of you may know us already, but we are Doncaster’s oldest cancer charity having started in 1972. We primarily fundraise to buy cancer-related equipment for our local hospitals and over the years have raised over £9 million purchasing over 80 pieces of equipment. This included building, equipping and upgrading St John’s Hospice which is now independently run. We could not have done all this without the generous donations and support from local residents, groups and various organisations. All our members and management team are volunteers – unlike the majority of charities we do not have any paid staff. Our last purchase was for Doncaster Royal Infirmary where, at the beginning of this year, we finally reached our goal of £500,000 to buy a new state-of-the-art CT scanner. This will be housed in the new CT unit currently being built and which should be operational by January 2020. Our current appeal which we started in April is for prostate cancer to raise £150,000 for a biopsy machine for the Urology Department at DRI. At the time of writing we have raised over £10,000. Please check our website (dcdt.co.uk) for regular updates. If you have any fundraising ideas or would like to organise an event on our behalf please do get in touch with us as we can supply you with T-shirts, posters, etc., and can advertise your event on our website. We are making preparations for our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre. This year it will be from Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We have some lovely new items which you can buy in memory of loved ones and will have more information for you in the next issues. We are always in need of volunteers and you will be made very welcome. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. It doesn’t matter how small your donation, it all goes towards the biopsy machine for Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Our charity has always believed that local money should support local people.

Community News Hatfield Town Cricket Club It's been a successful few weeks on the field for HTCC. The major performance being a Doncaster Evening Cup Final success over Bentley CC. In gloomy conditions at Doncaster Town fields Town were set a difficult target of 137 in 20 overs. A top team batting performance saw them reach the target with just 5 balls to spare in a late night nail-biting finale. Rhys Mann top scored with 59*. In the league they are one win away from a double success after some impressive performances from all the players. Meanwhile, the 1st XI have continued their impressive league form to sit 2nd in the League just 2 points off top spot. The highlight of their season so far being a devastating one-sided 110 run victory over league leaders Hundhill Hall. Put in to bat in difficult condition Town made a challenging 176-8 with Jake Van Oorschot 29 and Andy Cutts 39 setting the tome with a patient opening partnership. At the break the visitors thought they were in control but James Stewart 7-35, aided by Connah Pattison 2-12 ran through the visiting line up for just 66 runs! They have 4 games left to try and overtake the leaders and claim the top spot. The 2nd XI with have several youngsters performing well and are just behind the leaders at the top of the table. A recent 5 wicket success over neighbours Sykehouse being one of the standout performances with 4 juniors in the side. Rob Ridler starred with 4-12. The Sunday side maintained top spot with recent victories over Monk Bretton and Mexborough. and will be looking to keep up the good work in the remaining fixtures. The juniors have continued to progress well with the 'Arrow' Under 9's awaiting their cup final, the Under 11's producing some excellent performances and the Under 13's with several Under 11's in the ranks winning 5 consecutive matches to end the season on high. The Ladies Softball Cricket side enjoyed a successful finals day and finished 3rd in the South Yorkshire Finals day. they continue to train each Friday 6:00-7:00 at Carr Side Lane. Sadly our village BBQ event had to be cancelled when the weather forecast proved too unpredictable. We hope to have it back bigger and better next year. The Clubs presentation evening will be 18th October at Thornensian's Rugby club when the Juniors and Senior sides achievements will be recognised all club members and supporters are invited to come along, get in touch for more details at hatfieldtown@outlook.com
