Advertising in the Arrow Magazines Works! ‘We have now been using our friends at the Arrow for advertising for over a year now and consistently every month new customers are coming to us having seen our adverts in the Arrow Publications. We find them very helpful and accommodating and would happily recommend advertising with them. Jerry at Dream Doors Doncaster.’ ‘The Arrow is a great way for businesses to engage with the local community. It's ideal if you want to promote your business and advertise offers or events. I advertised to raise awareness of my new venture Fitness Vault in Branton as the magazine reaches a large audience at a reasonable price. I also feel that people will notice my adverts more if I use the magazine as opposed to delivering flyers. I'll definitely be looking to use the Arrow in future as a way of promoting changes that will likely be of interest to prospective customers.’ 'Since advertising in The Arrow earlier this year, I have had numerous, positive enquiries regarding yoga as a result. The magazine offers a varied balance of local news articles, information about local events, along with advertising for local businesses, which is why so many residents find it useful throughout our community. Michelle is professional, supportive and on hand to offer advice at any time. I would certainly recommend advertising in The Arrow.'

100 Years of Pilkington Garden Village. People who enjoy walking down by the canal past St. Oswald’s Church will be aware of the new housing development that is being built on the site of the old Kirk Sandall village. However how many have noticed the new street name sign that has gone up at the junction with Sandall Lane? The name Pilkington Road is a reference to the history of the community. 2019 sees the 100th anniversary of the decision of Pilkington Brothers, glasswork manufacturers from St. Helens in Lancashire, to built a factory in Kirk Sandall. After the First World War they began looking for a site with better access to the east coast. Doncaster was chosen mainly because of its good transport links with railways and canals giving access to ports such as Hull and Goole. In the beginning a lot of the workforce were brought over from St. Helens and early in 1920 after they had started work on the factory they also began building houses for them and their families .They first acquired some land in the autumn of 1919 in Barnby Dun where they began building Fairview Villas and Fairview Terrace on Station Road. In January 1920 the purchase of a very large area of land stretching from Long Sandall to the boundary with Barnby Dun was concluded. Most of this was agricultural including the village of Kirk Sandall which dated back to Saxon times and consisted of the ‘big house’, Sandall Grove, a number of cottages and small holdings and the parish church of St. Oswald’s. Long Sandall was a small hamlet but was also the site of a brickworks using the local clay in that part of the parish (where Sandall Park is now). At first the workers were housed in ‘temporary’ wooden huts – although some of them were still in use for a variety of purposes almost 30 years later! They wanted their new village to be built on modern lines and used a nationally known planner, Patrick Abercrombie, and a local architect T.H.Johnson to design a ‘Garden Village’ with houses, green spaces and allotments. As well as houses they provided many amenities including a school, an assembly hall, a boys’ club, shops and sporting facilities including football and cricket pitches, tennis courts, a crown green bowling club and a public house- the Kirk Sandall Hotel. Until the 1950s, when the local council administration began to get involved in planning for the post-war boom, they provided many of the things we take for granted such as maintained roads and street lighting. The glassworks closed in 2009 and the site is now used by Trackwork. Although some of the buildings and amenities provided back in the heyday have now disappeared many still remain and there are clues to others if you know where to look. If you live in a former Pilkington house you might actually find some reminders hidden away at the back of a cupboard or in the loft. For example do you have a piece of Vitrolite tile hidden anywhere? This special opal glass was an expensive and highly desirable luxury product when Pilkington’s first started producing it in the 1930s and it can still be found in a few exclusive hotels in London where Art Deco features have been retained. The Friends of St. Oswald’s Church together with Kirk Sandall Junior School are wanting to mark this 100th anniversary in 2020 and are looking to use this year to approach people who have memories, photographs or other memorabilia of life in the Garden Village. The intention is to gather these together and aim to have a festival weekend in 2020, perhaps along the lines of events that were held in the past when the village got involved in pageants, sports activities and displays. To start the discussion The Friends have produced a self-guided walking trail which will be launched at their first Open Day on Sunday May 19th at St. Oswald’s Church. If you are interested in being involved or have a contribution to make please contact the Secretary of The Friends of St. Oswald’s Church via their website www.stoswaldskirksandall.co.uk . Friends of Quarry Park We have had a very eventful March! Thank you to all the new faces at our Open Meeting on the 6th. It was lovely to meet you all and share what has been going on in the park. Our Work Party, on Friday 8th, kept our 5 volunteers and Dennis from the Council busy taking down some head height branches down to open up the areas underneath the trees. This helps more light reach the ground layer and helps more plants to grow underneath; such as the Bluebells and Snowdrops that were planted last October as well as creating a nice line of sight through the trees. Saturday 23rd March was our Keep Britain Tidy litter pick. We can’t wait to update you about what happened! Our next Work Party day will be on Friday 5th April and we meet at 10am at the Green Flag pole. Everybody is welcome and equipment and refreshments are provided. We hope to see you there! If you would like to be included on our mailing list about workdays and other activities that are going on in Quarry Park, please email thequarrypark@gmail.com Find us on Facebook @FriendsOfQuarryPark or contact us on thequarrypark@gmail.com
