Thorne Rural Lions
Our next activity is the Charity Walk on Sunday 12th May, starting on Town Field’s, at 10am. This is being done to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. We did this last year raising about £3000 for those suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
Later in the year will be a sports day for people with Disabilities at Parklands Sports and social Club on Saturday 10th August. Many lions Clubs come together to organise this. People with disabilities of all ages are invited to take part in each of the activities organised by the clubs. A snack and drinks are also provided free to the participants. We realised how much this had been missed by those who had taken part in the past when it was organised again after Covid. In September a Golf day takes place at Town Moor Golf Course, last year raising in excess of £4500. We raise money regularly by organising coffee mornings throughout the year. Every penny we raise goes back into the community. We get requests, often through social workers, to help out with white goods and furniture. Young people apply for grants towards projects they want to take part in.
We run race nights and casino nights for organisations to help them raise funds for their projects. We are known mainly for taking Santa and his sleigh round the streets of the areas we cover. This takes place from the end of November to almost Christmas Eve. This year we raised over £7000, our best year yet.
We also organise a toy appeal collecting toys, which are then distributed, to children in the area. As a group we are always busy helping out where we are needed. Lions is an international Organisation originally set up to help the local community but it also gets involved in helping countries around the world.
DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST
April is such a lovely month. Clocks have moved forward to give us more daylight hours which inspires us to get out and about.
On that note have you thought about organising an event (or entering one) to fundraise on our behalf? We have printed T-shirts available and we can help with publicity. There are various events if you are active: half marathons are taking place in Birmingham, Sunday 5th May; Bristol on Sunday 19th May; Manchester on Sunday 26th May; London on Sunday 1st September; Great North Run, Newcastle on Sunday 8th September.
For something a little else energetic how about organising a quiz evening, a book or plant sale, be sponsored to lose weight (good incentive!) or abstaining from alcohol, smoking or junk food for a month…..or two!
And for adrenalin junkies, how about abseiling or skydiving or trying a zipwire? The possibilities are endless and you will be raising money for much-needed cancer-related equipment for our local hospitals.
If you fancy any of the above do get in touch with us. Our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us.
Don’t forget, we will help publicise your fundraising efforts beforehand and can include a write-up and photograph on our website afterwards. Big or small, everything you do will help. Just get in touch with us.

Friends of Quarry Park
Our intrepid volunteers braved the atrocious weather on the morning of Friday 1st March for our latest tree planting session.
We were successful in our application for free trees from the South Yorkshire Mayor’s Free Trees for Communities scheme in conjunction with TCV. As part of the mayor’s commitment to planting 1.4 million trees across the region, the scheme gives packs of trees to communities across South Yorkshire as part of his plan to make places cleaner, greener and better off.
Trees are not just a great way to take carbon out of our atmosphere and fight climate change, they also help to protect against flooding, promote biodiversity, and improve wellbeing.
We received 250 saplings of different varieties, including Rowan, Hornbeam, Birch and Beech, along with Hawthorn, Dogwood and other hedging plants, which we planted in several areas around the park.
It was a very cold and wet morning, but our 16 heroic volunteers and Ranger Sam split into groups and worked hard to complete the planting in record time.
Due to the inclement weather, and everyone being really cold by now (even Riley the dog was shivering in his jacket!) we decided against staying for refreshments. Julie and Debra handed out their homemade cakes for everyone to take home - Welsh cakes from Debra as it was St David’s Day, and allegedly the start of Spring!!
Well done and thank you to everyone for turning out, at least we didn’t need to water the trees!!
Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, including litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear.
The next events are scheduled for Friday 5th April and Friday 3rd May 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at
thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.
