Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. The Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster at 10am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests. (see www.probusonline.org/danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Seaton play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. On June 3-7 a group of about 40 members and guests enjoyed a short break at Slayley Hall Hotel in Northumbria. As well as day trips to Lindisfarne and Alnick, Hexham and Carlisle, and Barnard Castle and the Bowes Museum, we stops in Durham and “Locomotion”, the railway museum in Shildon on outgoing and return journeys. Nicola Fox (Doncaster Heritage Services), a social historian at Cusworth Hall Museum told us about the Hall and the Battie-Wrightons, one of the main families to have occupied the it. Starting from 1740 and through to the present, it was a story of a rise to prominence and fall from grace. The former Doncaster Rural District Council took over the Hall and since then there has been a lot of restoration both inside the Hall and in the now very popular gardens. Neil McGregor, also of Doncaster Museum Services was our speaker on July1 with “Doncaster in Art”. Neil talked about some of the paintings relating to Doncaster in the Art Gallery’s collection which are rarely on show, which depict the some of the villages around Doncaster. These can be compared with contemporary views taken from the same place which then indicate interesting old

There were 6 volunteers and 2 DMBC staff helping to clear one of the heathland areas in Warren Plantation by removing ground cover and previously cut wood thinning’s and the weeds were cleared on the steps at the Greens Road Park entrance (see the ‘before and after’ photo’s) in honour of the Keep Britain Tidy Love Parks Week 12-21st July. Check out our Facebook page @FriendsofQuarryPark in case you are on there? Our next Work Party will be on Fri 2nd Aug, why not come along, get some exercise and fresh air, have a chat and a cuppa and biscuit or two at half time, you’ll feel loads better for it! Meet at 10am at the Green Flagpole where we hope to be raising a new 2019/20 flag sometime soon if we’ve met the criteria again, fingers crossed! HOLIDAY TIME FOR THORNE CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club is now well into its Summer programme with outings and photo shoots as well as holidays. Looking forward to Thorne Summer Festival, the Camera Club will be holding a free Exhibition of members’ work. The Exhibition Organiser, says, ‘ Come and visit our compact display of photographs by members of the Club, ranging from landscapes to seascapes, people, wildlife, flowers and many more topics. There will be over 70 images on show over two days enabling work from many members to be displayed. Members will be on hand throughout the exhibition to discuss the images, answer questions and also encourage anyone interested in Photography to join the Club and its activities.’ So why not go along and have a look at what they have been doing, and chat to members about the photos. You will be very welcome. As a bit of light relief at the end of the Spring Programme, the final projected image competition was Open only, with X-Factor judging, a panel of four members, as it suggests. Each judge, in this case, Jackie Woodward, Mike Donnison, Graham Linley and Terry Lockwood, gave a mark to each image, which, added together, gave the final score. The winning images were: Michael Farrand’s ‘By the Canal’ first, ‘St Mark’s Fly’ by Bill Mitchell second, also third with ‘Oak Leaves and Marble Gall’. Highly Commended was ‘Roseberry Topping’ by Terry Gunnill. The Chairman commented on the high standard of all images entered. This was followed by a small finger buffet and drinks to celebrate the end of another successful season, thanks to those helping out in the kitchen. Then, some exhibition winning images from around the world from the Yorkshire Photographic Union, were shown by chief projectionist, David Ulyett. The Summer School got off to a good start with all students attending the first session held in the Memorial Park in Thorne. Here they put into practice lessons learned regarding aperture setting and depth of field. The second session was rained off, and the class was forced to seek refuge in the Punch Bowl Inn where there was a warm welcome and chance to at least talk about the main points of the session. Other venues included St. Nicholas Church and Thorne town centre. A special invitation was received to a private photo shoot in the Old Rectory at Epworth, former home of the Wesley family. It was John Wesley and his brother, Charles, who founded Methodism here in Epworth, and then carried the word around the world. The Old Rectory, a beautiful Queen Anne style building, is decorated and furnished in the style the Wesley brothers would have been familiar with, as it was the home of their parents Samuel and Susanna Wesley and the remaining seven children. If you are interested in the Camera Club, please visit the Exhibition at the Summer fair.
