What a month, can You believe half the year is over? I can hear you say thank goodness for that! Normality has not yet returned but I am thankful for the few changes such as meeting up with others, businesses getting back to work and outdoor training sessions for all ages starting up again. We are currently awaiting information on further relaxing of restrictions following the news that our cafes, bars and restaurants have received some welcome news and hair and beauty salons are open again. They have been hit incredibly hard and I wish them all the very best of luck in rebuilding their businesses. I am hopeful usual community events can start up again soon so if you want to share any information in the September issue, please let me know. The deadline for the September issue is Wednesday 19th August. Keep safe everyone. Julie Morrell Tel: 07854 880882 Julie@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk Find us on facebook

Independent Walk Routes around Doncaster A local walk from Campsall Please take care when walking and follow the Countryside Code. People in England can exercise with up to five others from different households provided physical distancing guidelines are followed. People living alone or single parents with children under 18, can meet outdoors. Give way to other walkers. This pleasurable 5.7mile circular walk starts in Campsall, but basically circumnavigates Norton village in an anticlockwise direction taking in the remains of an ancient cross and historic Norton Priory. Much of the route is across arable land cultivated with (on this occasion) wheat, oilseed rape, and oats. From the car park on Church Field Road (close to Beech Road) turn left and head up Church Field Road for 250m. Opposite Park Drive there is a footpath leading into woods. Take this Continue in this direction for ¼ mile then turn right and follow for another ¼ mile before turning left. This uninspiring wide track leads to High Street, where you turn right, following the road round turning left on Stubbs Lane. Stay on Stubbs Lane for just over ½ mile to reach the ancient remains of a Stone Cross Tanpit Lane cross is a good example of a medieval cross still standing in its original position. Its importance is enhanced by its proximity to Norton Priory, which lies just across the River Went. The remains of the medieval cross, located at the end Tanpit Lane, is a Listed Grade II monument, and is sited 550m north east of the core of Norton Priory. It is thought to be a wayside cross related to the priory. It survives as a socketed cross base, orientated to the cardinal compass points. There is an Ordnance Survey bench mark carved on the southern face of the base. Directly opposite the cross there should be a footpath entrance in the hedge (marked red on the map) but unfortunately the opening is over grown so a detour takes us 250m further along Tanpit lane to a T junction. Turn left, and after 180m turn left again at a way-marker. Continue in this direction for just under ½ mile. Occasionally you may find fields roped off, for example to separate horses, so it may be necessary to pass under / over these. On reaching Walden Stubbs Road turn right Norton was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it is recorded that it was owned by Ilbert de Laci. A chapel is believed to have been situated at the top of Priory Road or Hall Lane (on the left as we continue straight ahead) in the area known as Priory Garth. This part of the parish is now known as Norton Priory. Follow Norton Mill Lane as it twists and turns and eventually after just over ½ mile exits onto Spittlerush Lane. Turn left and remain on the road for 560m to reach cross roads. Turn right then after 350m as the road bents right continue on the footpath ahead (by gate). After 280m at a finger post turn left and head towards windmill in distance. Follow the track left through farm yard and continue in this direction for ½ mile crossing Ryecroft Road to eventually reach Campsall Balk. Turn left and immediately right at a way-marker to head south on Ings Lane. On reaching a wide track by the entrance of woods turn right and shortly after left to return to Church Field Road and the car part ¼ mile away. Courtesy of Doncaster Ramblers

Bags of Creativity for Doncaster’s Children and Young People this Summer A new partnership will deliver bags packed with creative activities and inspiring materials to over 1200 vulnerable children and young people in Doncaster this Summer. IVE, the Bridge Organisation for Yorkshire and the Humber, is working with Doncaster Cultural Education Partnership (DCEP) and Doncaster Children’s Services Trust to deliver Bags of Creativity. The bags are designed to make sure all children and young people can be creative at home by providing everything they need in one place. DCEP has recruited a team of 20 local creative practitioners and organisations to design activities for Bags of Creativity. Artists selected include illustrator Ed Syder, Talegate theatre, Angie Hardwick, Buglight Theatre, Mariam Shah and Anna Bean. Child development specialists, Dr Karen Dunn and Di Chilvers, have given training and mentoring to the team to ensure activities are tailored to the contents of the bags and engaging for children in each age range. DCEP is working directly with Doncaster Children’s Services Trust to distribute the bags to vulnerable children via trusted adults including social workers and foster carers. Bags of Creativity, containing 20 specially designed activity postcards, have been created for three separate age groups. For 26 year-olds, an orange bag contains vibrant chiffon scarves, a space blanket, and many other materials to enhance imaginative play. 7-11 year-olds will receive a bright green bag full of colouring pencils, pipe cleaners and further tactile materials for creative expression. 12-16 year-olds will receive a navy blue bag with contents including watercolour paints and modelling clay, giving them additional ways to explore their creativity. LazenbyBrown of York designed the Bags of Creativity free of charge. Helen Jones, Joint Chair of DCEP said: “We’re thrilled with the response to Bags of Creativity from creative practitioners and organisations in our area. We’re very happy to be working in partnership with Doncaster Children’s Services Trust this summer to ensure that these resources reach the children who need them most.”

Many More Activities Available on darts at Home Artists, Musicians, Dancers, Film-makers, Poets and Drama Practitioners have created yet more high quality creative opportunities to engage in. There are now almost 200 new activities and resources on the darts at Home pages of www.wearedarts.org.uk for all ages – whether you are at home, or back at school or work. Highlights include a Poetry Prompts pack created by poet and broadcaster, Ian McMillan, ‘Drawing Like a Sculptor’ activities by local sculptor, Dan Jones and a wealth of singing activities and videos created by musician and choir-leader, Janet Wood. Dance On activities have moved from community halls to the screen with plenty of videos to follow plus live sessions via Zoom. All of the activities are accessible and enjoyable for all to get involved in – whatever your age or experience. There are also activities specifically designed to improve health and wellbeing such as Singing for Memory resources for those living with dementia and their carers, and Creative Directions resources for adults who are feeling anxious, isolated or are experiencing mental ill health. There are also lots of opportunities to get involved in activities or celebrations to replace postponed events that so many Doncaster families will miss. The annual Sing+Sign performance, for example, that brings together all of the Special Schools for a celebration of songs created by the children and young people, can be enjoyed at home by learning all of the songs and accompanying Makaton signs. Assistant Director, Lucy Robertshaw, says: “We know that some people have found being in lockdown very isolating or worrying. We have been talking to people who regularly attend our creative sessions in communities and at our building, The Point, to find out what they need. Whilst we can’t deliver these sessions face to face at the moment, we can provide inspiring and accessible activities that help people feel connected, motivated and more happy.” darts is encouraging those who get involved in the activities to share what they have created for an online gallery to be launched soon. Tag them on social media @wearedarts or email hello@wearedarts.org.uk

Thorne Camera Club Out ‘n’ About Again Although still meeting according to the rules and regulations, Club members are out with their cameras again. In small groups, up to six members, socially distancing, visits have been made to Thorne Community Wood, the Delves, Rawcliffe Sugar Ponds, Goole Docks and other places locally. It is a relief to feel things getting back to more normal, and chatting to people not seen for a couple of months. The first outing, suggested by Bill, one of the founder members of the club, who felt the lockdown had gone on long enough and, with easing, was the ideal opportunity. The walk was a great success, the weather was good, there was lots of wildlife and nature to photograph and lots of stories to tell. Four gents and two ladies formed the group, all keen photographers, all keeping their distance but helping each other get the shots. The Delves, a lovely, tranquil place, is very relaxing, as being by water often is. It was good to see so many fishermen out, and youngsters learning from Dad as Mum kept a watchful eye on her offspring ( no big splashes to disturb the fish!). The fish in the ponds are getting to be a fine size, and one beginner was proud to show his first catch before returning it safely to the water ( after having his photo taken, of course ). Rawclifffe Sugar Ponds is a place where more unusual things can be seen, like great crested grebe carrying their young, and toads mating. The former were shy and kept their distance while the latter couldn’t care less and ignored their audience totally. Now the bridge is finally finished and open to traffic again, it is easier to get there, and well signed. The visit to Goole Docks was less enjoyable as the weather was colder, damper, and the docks almost empty, just one ship being loaded with scrap metal. The footpath through the docks seems to get shorter every year, but the view from the lock gates of Ocean Lock out to the River Ouse never fails to impress. Even in these unprecedented times, Thorne Camera Club continues to attract new members, with enquiries and people joining the group. The online video conferencing has continued under Mike’s leadership, and the facebook group too, although everyone is eager for the time when meetings can start again. When this will be remains very uncertain at the moment. Until then, members keep in touch, meet up when they can, and continue indoors and out with this great hobby of ours.
